Title: What wheels ?
Post by: MEZZA on 07 January 2021, 19:17
Just seen a MK8 Gti for sale in Lookers VW Northallerton on Autotrader (don't know how to do the link) - it's Black,£31,999.00 - the wheels are 18" (you can see the tyre size in the photos) but they are a 10 spoke design, anthracite grey in colour which look really good - I was thinking it a shame why VW don't offer them as an option ! - does anybody know what they are ?

Why would someone be selling it after 1 month and 750 miles??? Unless it was a demonstrator.

That’s a very nice looking car. Like a more modern mk7.

Got to be a demo for sure, dealer put the Prets on I bet

It's amusing the number of dealer demos / stock cars that are appearing with dealer-fitted wheels... I don't remember seeing that ever happen with the Mk7. The standard wheels are so bad that even the dealers realise it.

Yes I was about to ask why the hell a dealer demo car had non oem wheels. Really strange.

Do you think they will tell the buyer about declaring those to their insurance company?
Title: Re: What wheels ?
Post by: Al1040 on 07 January 2021, 20:14
I really like them, a normal buyer will have no idea they are not standard so will be very unlikely to tell their insurance
Title: Re: What wheels ?

Could well be genuine 18” Pretoria option alloys fitted to it

I very much doubt they’d tell the buyer. The dealer’s primary concern will be getting the car sold. I wonder what they did with the original factory wheels?

Also seem to remember seeing on the forum very recently a grey (Moonstone Grey?) mk8 GTI Clubsport with 19” Brescia alloys. Think it was posted by Evo1986 and the car was at Cheltenham VW. There was another at Wrexham VW - link to video was posted by @Guzzle in another thread.

IMO the mk8 Clubsport does look better with either Pretoria’s or Brescia’s than it does with the standard 18” Richmond alloys or 19” Adelaide’s.

I wouldn’t declare it. The car has been sold to you by a franchised VW dealer. I don’t think an insurance company would get away with being able to argue it’s been modified.

I’ve just insured my clubsport. I had a few issues getting a quote. As it’s a new model, quite a few insurers don’t yet have it on the system. I picked it up using the VW 5 day drive away policy. I got a quote from them, and it was better than any quote I’d managed to get online by quite some margin. I also enquired about changing the wheels to 19s, and they had no problem, and no extra charge

I once bought a second hand Ford, from a main dealer. The car had several things added by the previous owner that were not standard on that model, they came from higher trim levels. I wrote the car off and when debating the value with the insurance company it became clear that there were modifications but how was i supposed to know that? Anyway, i paid for a better car than the payout from the insurance. Guess I was lucky not to get the policy cancelled.

Hence me being a little concerned about someone putting another naive person in that mess.
Title: Re: What wheels ?
Post by: Yusee on 07 January 2021, 21:34
I've always been very meticulous about my insurance. In this instance I don't see how they could possibly be able to cancel the policy.
I suppose if this mk8 was stolen, the claims assessor could argue that the car was made massively more desirable by changing those terrible standard wheels

Conversely, should be safe from theft with the standard eighteens. You could leave it unlocked in a car park and expect it still to be there when you come back

Agree with that and thanks for the info Clarky92 - the black body colour helps to disguise that very large lower grille imo and together with the wheels makes the car look a bit more "macho"

There is a very good selection of alloys in that catalog there.

I have a GTI ordered with the Estorils but I am being loaded with extra VRT (Ireland) due to the increase in Co2’s, is leaving the standard alloys on and buying upgraded alloys through the catalog a work around? Or is there any downsides to this... Don’t mind what alloys I have as long as it’s not the standard Richmonds...

If I were you I’d stick with the standard wheels and try and source a set of genuine Pretoria 19’s. The hike in VRT and annual motor tax is a crazy price to pay for a wheel upgrade.

The 18” Pretorias and 19” Brescias cropping up on a few demo mk8’s right now are promotional “new old stock” being shipped out to dealers from VW UK, £1360 for the 19’s and £1840 for the 19’s including tyres (Contis and Dunlops respectively)

Hey K,

Has this been confirmed for you by your VW dealer? Which model exactly did you go for? A mate of mine has also ordered a Clubsport and added wheels and pan roof but wasn't advised of any increase in VRT...

He's ordered a standard manual GTI and the wheel upgrade definitely triggers the VRT hike in that car. I'm afraid that factory upgraded wheels don't make any financial sense on the standard GTI (In Ireland).

Ah sound. I went onto the configurator again there and the Clubsport is 170 on the button with all the options he's picked.
The standard GTI shoots right up though and up to 600e per year road tax...ouch!

Yeah that’s it. To be honest I didn’t find my dealer very informative about VRT...

Have been thinking more about it though and have reached out to them to discuss it, will keep you posted what happens.

Waiting to hear back from the dealership but just wondering if I did want to make a change is it possible? I have a build week confirmed, I understand in that case you can make a change but you loose your build slot?

Not sure if I would do anything but would just like to know my options!
Title: Re: What wheels ?
Post by: JoeGTI on 08 January 2021, 20:21
with a confirmed BW you're probably running out of time to make changes, there's probably a certain date at which its "locked in" and you cannot do anymore... best to check with the dealer asap.
Title: Re: What wheels ?
Post by: fredgroves on 08 January 2021, 20:32
BW confirmed means they know they have all of the parts to make your car and a time to make it.

Unlikely you will be able to change the order now.

Does anyone know if the Pretoria’s are the same price regardless of colour?
Just went to enquire about a set at my local Vw garage but the parts department have closed till Monday,

I can get graphite grey with continental contact 6 tyres off eBay for £1250.

But I really want black....then I will just keep the richmonds in storage.

Assume you mean the 18 inch versions sold as genuine VW accessories?

If so, the silver and black are both officially the same price, not sure on the dark or light grey as they haven't been around for as long but do seem to be available for a slightly lower price.

Yeah that’s them,I can get away with the dark grey, but think black would be better....figured 1250 with tyres was a good price.
Title: Re: What wheels ?
Post by: Guzzle on 09 January 2021, 13:30
The tyres alone will be at least £300, so that's £950 max for some genuine VAG alloys. I don't think that's too bad.

There are some aftermarket wheels by the likes of BBS, Borbet etc for a little bit less, but if you want genuine VAG that price seems pretty reasonable to me.

Just to update on the above, kept my order the same as even based on my spec the Clubsport would also incur extra VRT. I prefer the manual anyway and am coming from a 150bhp R line so I think the standard GTI is more then enough. Some might think I’m mad paying the VRT but I am delighted with my spec and each to their own.

Current estimated build week is week 14 though (ordered in December) so a long wait ahead.

A friend of mine and I were given estimates of 12 weeks on our clubbys...that was last week that we went order confirmed. I'm hoping that was a realistic estimate...we haven't been given confirmed build dates yet though...you guys are both in the UK are you?

Yeah, I saw that last week or whenever it was. A sudden change as just before that he was displaying some hideous Vossen thingies (apologies to Vossen lovers).
I really like those Prets, proper offset and a nice colour too.

Absolutely! The prets are slightly darker, more of a gun metal type colour. They’re great and the offset is a bonus.

I'm gonna call the dealer tomorrow for an update and to see if this parts shortage at VW plants will affect the Golfs...I read ond article that it affects the Tiguan and something else but there was no mention of the Golf.

I'm excited to get into the new motor but not in a rush at the same time. Only thing which concerns me is if I sell my car privately now, I will have to share a car with the misses for the next 6 months which would be a tad inconvenient...I may have to hold off on selling mine if there will be a big delay. At least the trade price is locked in regardless of when the new motor arrives. I hope!!

I have DCC on my CS (mk 7) with 19's. I use it mostly in individual setting where, suspension is soft, but everything else apart from engine sound is in sport.

On a good condition road or I feel there is an opportunity for some fun? I select sport. If the road surface is bad and I want lighter steering, I select comfort mode.

These are the 3 modes I use as often as is practicable, i rarely use Eco or Normal, only to see if there is much difference to the other settings, at the margin there is.
I haven't driven a Mk8 so can't comment on the ride with 18's, for a mk7 I would prefer it had DCC with 19's.

I think it makes a car on 19's easier to sell with DCC, try finding a mk7 CS with DCC, it seems to be 1 in 10 have it and standard fitment on the CS-S.
I can see DCC being a desirable option on the Mk8 now it has infinite adjustment?
