Title: sat nav update - discover media
Post by: mistac on 22 December 2020, 13:21
Folks - I previously updated my map back in mar20 using discovercare (my preferred method) - i see on the vw website it indicates an update is available for discover nav? - but there is no updated map when i launch discovercare - as that is my preferred method do i just need to wait for discovercare to catch up at some point?

I tried Discovercare  yesterday. I tried to update it and it took me to the VW German site where despite my best efforts and translation to English I failed to get it to update. I did update the maps by copying the latest map, unzipping it and copying it on to the VW SD card which I had reformatted to FAT32. It didn’t take long. Much easier than DiscoverCare. See “What have you done to your Mk7 today” thread, P1098, posted yesterday.

I want to say they've discontinued discovery care. You can't download it any more.

As with all electronics, sooner or later the manufacturer stops providing updates.

You can probably get the raw update still?

Discover care was dropped because it was utter garbage. My pal in Scotland used it and it downloaded the maps he already had on his SD card
Direct download of maps is best method of updating. Did mine about 4 weeks ago 👍

thanks for that - once I pluck up the courage I will have a go using direct download - just concerned I will mess up/lose the original map data when formatting the card - should  I back it up on to another usb stick or computer before in case it goes pear shaped? i also have speed cams on the sd card (or have i ??) as they are shown on map data so dont want to lose them either

Presuming you're using a PC, create two folders on your desktop. Label one Old Sat Nav, and one New Sat Nav. Copy the content of the SD drive to the old folder before you start so that you have a back up if needed. Download your choice of new file from the VW Sat nav update page, for the year of your car, download to your computer then unzip/extract  the content to the New Sat Nav folder. Go to your SD card, in your card reader/ file manager and right click it and choose format this drive. Select the FAT 32 format option and click ok. When the SD card is formatted, copy the unzipped map download to the SD card. Insert into the SD slot in the glove box, go to the Sat Nav screen, hit settings and update the Sat Nav software. Hope this helps. My version shows 5NA919866AS 1520 ECE1 2021.

Download the new file from the VW Sat nav update page for the year of your car, download to your computer then unzip/extract  the content to the new Sat Nav folder

http://webspecial.volkswagen.de/vwinfotainment/int/en/index/downloads.html

Thought I would add this link, might try this today.. Any reason I can't use a different SD card? Does it have to be the original?

The only ones that work are digitally signed - its a protection thing.

You can get around it, if you are a whizz... google it.

If not, use the VW supplied one.

Merry Christmas All,

When I try to transfer the unzipped files to my SD card it gets right to the end then says: 'The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code 100007). Although the content seems to be on the card, when I put it back into the car the sat nav cannot read it.
I am using the VW SD card that came with the car and have formatted it before attempting this update.
Any ideas please?
Cheers,
Chas.

Sounds like it ran out of space during the copy. Make sure you are only copying the right files.. The archive has mib 1 and mib 2 folders, you only need the relevant one...

Did you back up your existing maps to a folder before you started? If so then reformat the sd card to FAT 32 which will erase the files on it and it should give you a clean space, sufficient to install the current map. I used bundle 1 maps as it is probably the smallest. Have you tried to identify what the error code means? I have got error messages on DiscoverCare before but it told me it was lack of space and when I reformatted the card it solved the space problem.

Thanks for posting that Ceefeesh, you make it sound very easy!

That’s the method I used and I had the update installed in around 15 minutes. It was much more straightforward and quicker than DiscoverCare.

Thanks Fred & ceefeesh.
I followed your instructions CF so have saved my 'old' sat nav data.
Regarding the update, I selected the 'European Countries' option which shows to be 14.94gb.
I don't know what the mib 1  or min 2 folders are?

At one stage I saw the size of the upload as 17gb, which I thought was too big because theSD card is 16gb  but when I followed the instructions above, unzipped it and copied it over, it worked. If you have your original maps to revert to, give it a go. “Who dares wins, Rodney”

Just to update you: I have had success downloading the European Countries Bundle 1.
This is showing Version Information:

ECE1 2021

I presume that is the latest map available for my Discover Media system?

Thanks for all your assistance. Chas.

Just noticed that v13.7 is available so will update later (Map bundle 1 = 14.94Gb)

I know when I did my first update after buying my car at the end of August I couldn't get it to work.

Then I was told to only use the VW card and just delete the old file (remember to empty the trash if using a Mac) then drag/drop the new file which was v12.7 at the time.

I hadn't really appreciated that once unzipped you only really need to transfer the MB! or MB2 file onto the SD card although I'm never sure which I have.
Title: Re: sat nav update - discover media
Post by: fredgroves on 27 December 2020, 10:50
MIB 1 was cars prior to about 2016 I think, after that its MIB 2.

MIB 1 was the original navpro with the physical buttons, mib 2 is the bigger one with touch buttons only.

For basic nav, mib 1 had I think a 6 inch screen, mib 2 has a eight inch screen.

A Mk7.5 golf is definitely MIB 2.

Does that help?

Ive just downloaded to my Mac Version13 of DiscoverMedia. Having unzipped it I cannot see any files called MIB1 or MIB2.
I would attach a screenshot of my download if this would let me. Any ideas please?

I did the 13.7 update last night.

Take your VW Nav SD card and backup the current 'maps' folder and then delete the file from the SD so it's blank (the card is only 16Gb so there is only room for one version at a time).

Unzip the update which should create a folder called 'maps'.

All you need to do is drag/copy this onto your card.

That's it... you don't need to open the folder and copy only parts of it.

Plug it back into and the car will do the rest.

On the Discover Media the Nav maps are run from the card.

Hi Rudedog
Thank you for your info, that’s exactly what I thought.
Which option did you download from the VW site, was it titled: European Countries or
 European Countries - Bundle 1 ?

Originally I downloaded the European Countries option & when I tried to copy the unzipped maps to my vw sd card it got right to the end then told me, ‘The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code 100007)’.
Having then formatted the card I downloaded the European Countries- Bundle 1 and that worked in the car.
I really wanted the European Countries option as it covers more of Europe.
Cheers, Chas.

Also, I can't remember if you have to reload any POI's that you've created each time you apply an update?
if you've loaded your own POIs then they remain on. They are independent of the maps.

Hi Rudedog,   which site are you downloading the zip file from?   Using the VW site, and selecting my version of the golf,  i can download a file which unpacks to Mib1 and Mib2 folders.   My system is a mib2, so i copied the contents of mib2 folder to my formatted SD card, but the car will not recognise it as containing valid maps. I have also tried just copying the contents of the Mib2 folder to the root of the SD, but still no joy.   I am not seeing the maps folder at all on the download. Puzzled?

regards, Dave.

Hi Chas,
That link does not seem to  offer me a download.  The one I am using is: https://www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners-and-drivers/my-car/how-to-guides/sat-nav

Then i use the link in section 1 to select the car and map type, but all i get is the MIB1 MIB2 folders.

Cheers,  Dave

Looking back I actually downloaded the first option which is labelled just European Counties (I thought this was called bundle 1 but obviously it isn't).

I also got the occasional error but I think this was because I only have a small usable space on my hard-drive, the unzipped file is very large and then on top of that you are adding the maps file of 15Gb so you need to have enough free space to handle both.

Same goes for the VW card, if you were able to install the smaller maps file then maybe there is a space issue, the European Countries file is 14.7Gb.

I initially thought that there might be an internal error with the maps file but it just came down to how I managed the space for the unzipped file.

Golfberg - the site you are using is correct, when you unzip the download you 'should' have a folder just called 'maps', copy the folder at this level rather than going deeper into it (I did this when I first tried).

You can ignore the fact that you have both MiB1 & MiB2, let the car work out what's what.

Thanks Rudedog, I will give the European Countries option one more try (having deleted the other one first from my vw sd card).

Try volkswagen.co.uk

Once there, a little way down you should see:

Methods for updating Navigation software.
Discover Navigation and Discover Navigation Pro touch-screen navigation/radio systems include free lifetime navigation software updates. The latest map updates for your navigation system will get you new roads, itineraries and the latest POIs in Europe.
There are a couple of ways you can update your navigation system.
1. Download the full set of data in one go, or choose to download segments from the Volkswagen International Infotainment website . Please note some of the content on this website may not be UK specific, please contact your local Volkswagen Retailer for further information. Full instructions on how to perform the update are also available on the website.
The latest available map packs are available for the following devices;
Discover Pro
Discover Media

You need to select the 'Volkswagen International Infotainment website' and follow their instructions.
Hopefully that should work.
Cheers, Chas.

Hi RD,   When i donwnload the file for my car, GTD (from 2015) and upzip it, I get the following file:

P189_N60S5MIBH3_EU_NT

This has sub folders:

Mib1
Mib2
and a text file.

There are various sub folders in both Mib1 and Mib2, but none called "maps.

Puzzled.

Hi Dave,
For whatever reason I think that Ive used a different route to RD, as I don't seem to get the MIB1 or MIB2 folders.
If you google 'VW golf sat nav update'

At the top of the result should be 'How to use and update your Sat Nav system
Select this.
Under the paragraph 'Methods for updating Navigation Software', click on the 'Volkswagen International Infotainment website' which is in sub paragraph 1. From there follow their instructions.

Let me know how you get on.
Cheers, Chas.

I think this could be a version issue...

By the looks of things we have two slightly different MY which means a different download file.

I can only go by the file for cars 2017 to end 2019.

Hi Chas,  worked my way through to the ‘Volkswagen international website” fine.  clicking on that takes me to VW map updates page to select my car from the full VW range.  Clicking on my car model year, it takes me to the download already described.  Very strange we are getting different responses.  I have even just tried changing my IP address through a VPN to one based in Frankfurt, to see if location has any bearing on it, but it’s still the same.

Hi RD and Chas, my car is a 2016 Golf GTD Mk 7.   The options for download from the VW update Satnav site are:

Golf GTD from 2015 or
Golf GTD from 2017.

I obviously opted for the first one, as i assumed the 2017 option would cover the Mk 7.5 and not compatible with mine.

Well, i have downloaded the 2017 version and put the SD card in the car, it’s showing the version as:
5NA919866A, 1520, ECE1,  2021, and it appears to work.   I have not tested it yet with a route, but i suspect there will not be a problem.

VW need to make things much clearer to their owners.

thanks both for your help.

Dave

It’s model year, not registration. Still doesn’t pinpoint which, though, but, once you’ve sorted your model year, most things, such as what came standard on the car, follow. Generally, cars registered in the last half of a year are the next years model, but there is obviously an undefined crossover.
