Hi all,
New to this forum and hoping a few can shed some light on the experience I've had with my new car since taking delivery of it a few months ago.
It's a brand new Golf GTI 7.5 Performance Pack and like most people, I immediately fell in love with the car and how it performs.
Unfortunately within a few days, I noticed a buzzing sound coming from the front left hand side air vent when the car was idle - especially noticeable when the engine cuts off at the lights.
Took it to the garage where they had it for a few days. They had to strip the whole glove compartment to find the fault, source a part and get it fixed.
Wasn't overly fussed although not the most reassuring for a car of this value to have had a visit within the 1st month.
Moving on.
I get the car back from the service centre and within a week, I get a new warning saying the Front Assist sensor isn't working.
Had a look online and found that this could be something as trivial as a bug stuck on the front of the sensor so left it for a few days, hoping it would rectify itself. Alas - still not working.
Annoyingly this also disables the ACC which you quickly realise how frustrating this is when you can't use it.
Phoned the garage again to explain this recent 'unrelated' fault, only to be told that this issue may endure a £350 re-callibration fee!!!
I've looked into what's involved in said calibration and appreciate it is vital in making the ACC & Front assist operate - however I'm shocked at the fact I may be expected to pay this cost given this issue never cropped up before it was in their hands.
For a car that is no older than 3 months to have had 2 visits to the garage is shocking in my opinion.
Has anyone else had similar experience with this issue? I'd be obliged if you could shed your advice or anyone else who may be able to assist as at this stage, I'm grudgingly contemplating handing it back.
Thank you & hope everyone is keeping well & safe!

Well, a rattle from new has got to be something fairly common for any OEM. I'd be more surprised if my car didn't have one and that they couldn't fix it.
So I wouldn't mark them down for that.
The ACC... hmmm on the Mk7.5 it isn't something that can be knocked out of whack unlike the Mk7. The usual cause for it getting out of alignment is having the front end dismantled and put back together again.
They didn't dismantle the front looking for the rattle did they?
The "realignment" from what others have said isn't actually a realignment - but probably just a zero reset - ie tell the sensor this is zero, single push button, job done.
To be honest, if I had it only 5 minutes, I'd be saying that whatever the ACC fault is, you fix it - its a brand new car.
Did you buy it from the same dealership that are trying to fix it?
-
Hmmm seems very cheeky of them to ask you to pay to repair this on a 3 month old car? I presume this should be covered under warranty.
I would push for them to repair under warranty or threaten to give the car back!
-
As said, just push back (in person if you can) to the service guys and they will soon cave in. I would not be paying a single penny for anything to be fixed on such a new car, unless I caused the damage myself or was in an accident etc.
-
I had this happen after mine was in for a new headlight and turns out it was their fault and should have been re-set before I left the garage. I kicked off big time and they sorted it along with some goodwill (it was the 5th visit to sort the headlight issue!). No way should you be paying for it.

I have had a couple of "front assist not working" messages, and they've always resolved themselves

I have never been asked or even been told I could be paying anything whilst my car is in warranty. Neither I would if there is no damage. Im sure you wont pay a penny for it.
-
VW near a business park in Oxfordshire charged me for recal on the radar sensor (4-wheel alignment, radar cal itself) while tue car was in warranty and less than a year since I had it (been sat at another dealer for 3 months before I got it).
Mind you that was only a GTD DSG with a list price of 30ish k£ ... so why bother about giving a customer a good service...
-
Appreciate all the responses. VW UK customer services weren't much help so now waiting to hear back from the dealer whether they will cover the 'potential' cost. I didn't purchase it from the same garage where it's been serviced however I wouldn't have thought this would be a problem - being it's an authorised VW garage.
Otherwise I'll just hand it back which is a shame as issues aside, it's a great car to drive.
-
You could try taking it to the dealer that you bought it from.
Rejecting a car for three hundred quid is a bit extreme. The aggro is going to be far more than three hundred quid.
-
They really ought to be giving a reason as to why VW are not covering the cost- they would have to be saying you broke it.
I wouldn’t reject the car- I don’t think you have grounds to- but if their final response is that they’re not paying I would make a claim against the supplying dealer.
Tell them they must sort it or you’ll take legal action.
They will pay because they won’t be able to get away with it. Even if the “ calibration “ isn’t covered under warranty, it should not require doing so soon- unless they’re saying you caused it
-
I've just cleaned the car again and inspected the front VW emblem for any marks/scratches/dents and it's immaculate so would be astounded if they come back saying it was damaged and needed recalibration for this reason.
Spoke to the original dealer who were more helpful so waiting to book it into the local garage and see what they find. Seem to have the backing of the dealer now which is promising.
Appreciate everyones feedback and update the post once it's been in - probably into the New Year now.
Merry Xmas to all!

Is it really that easy to mess it up?. You kind of have to take the front bumper off or partly off just to replace the Xenon headlight bulbs. I did it once and it was a right pain in the arse, but might be worried about doing it again if that is the case
As everyone else said, unless it's something you've done and caused they should totally be covering the cost for you. It's insane for them to even suggest otherwise without a reason.
Glad it sounds like it's been booked in now with the dealers backing

On the mk7.5 it's fixed on the top cross piece of the front grill assembly. On the mk7 it's in that hole in the front grill but attached to something else more substantial. The mk7 one gets whacked by things you hit on the road, the later design is better unless someone starts taking the front end apart..
I'm fairly sure as well as a proper full adjustment there is also a quick software zero. There was someone on here who needed a realign but had their dash cam on and was able to time how long this four hundred quid process took.. It was about two minutes.. That's not a realign with a radar target. Just setting the car up square would take best part of an hour.
-
The Mk7 one is mounted to the front cross member too. I needed a new cross member when a pheasant decided to run into my front bumper. It took the radar sensor clean off and smashed the bracket it clips to. The original radar just clipped back on and worked without any need for calibration.

Thanks for your responses - much appreciated.
Update for those interested.
Took it to the VW service garage and they recalibrated the sensor 'under warranty' without any questions. Not sure if this is due to the noise I made prior to dropping the car off but nevertheless, glad it didn't cost me £350.
They didn't clarify whether it was loose or the reasoning behind the fault so assume it was a fault on their part during the 1st service visit a few week ago.
Got the car back last Thursday and so far so good until this morning. Driving along the road when I get a new warning message saying 'Front sensor impaired, ACC & front assist not available'.
Not to be confused with the previous message which was just said 'Front Assist unavailable' - no mention of sensor being impaired.
Pulled over and wiped the front emblem thinking it may have been bug splatter. Switched the car off & back on and hey presto - no warning!
Going to report it to the garage regardless so they have a note of it however hopefully won't reappear. All the snow we've had the past week has cleared as of yesterday so can't even put it down to that :undecided:
Fingers crossed!

Good to hear they’re taking responsibility. It may need a new sensor, at least you know it’ll be fixed without costing you.
