From a standing start yes. But it'd smoke a Golf R if it was already on the move.

I struggle with traction in second, third in the wet. A 300 bhp R will out perform any GTI upto legal limits

no it won't. Many factors, tyres and driver for starters. Just because you struggle for traction doesn't mean every GTi will be the same.

From a standing start, yes. But if your referring to moving 'in gear times'  I don't agree with you there, I have a standard 7.5 PP and when it grips I have kept up with a 7.5 R well below legal limits.

Legal limits on the roads are nowhere near what either car can achieve. It's when the speeds get much higher when the true differences will show. There will be many variables and no measurable differences by eye when a bloke in a GTI happens across a complete stranger in an R, so it's all beer talk really.
