We are all talking about the mark 8 golfs etc
What colour have people ordered and spec?
-
GTI dcc in Dolphin Grey. Due February hopefully.
-
Dolphin grey for my brother.
-
I’ve only ever seen Dolphin Grey on the configurator, it had better be good. Well, too late now. 😂

Happy now, that looks good in the flesh. Thanks.

Great pictures, but now I wish I gone for the 19s instead of the standard wheels but still can’t wait.

Saw these this morning Lee. They look great.

The red is by far the standout colour. Greys are okay but a bit dull.

I'm with you on the red. 👍
Once again the only shade of blue available is navy blue unless you're buying an R.

Tbh as much as I love Lapiz I’m not sure how it would work with the gti red accents.

Yeah I get that, but still I did quite like the Mk5 in Laser Blue
(https://i.postimg.cc/Pr9NYvYW/IMAG0201.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Would still be fine on a GTD or GTE. There is also the factory 'Black Pack' to omit the red accents shown on the Irish brochure that was leaked the other week.

Tbf my mk5 was in blue graphite which goes to show I don’t follow my own advice. Looked very blue some days. I don’t even remember laser blue!
Not sure why anyone would buy a gti and remove the red accents though.
-
I wouldn't remove the red accents either, although I expect there may be some that would.
Laser Blue was an early doors colour for the Mk5, which VW cunningly discontinued shortly before the R32 went on sale. Presumably because it was too similar to the signature Deep Blue colour it was using to promote the R32.

Yes it looks amazing I cannot wait for my clubsport demo in that colour coming end of December 🎅🏻🎁

A blue one came along the road when I was walking back home this morning. Was very very suprised to see one yet. Not sure the front red works with it personally but The colour worked on the rest of the car though all imo if cause.
-
Hi, I have gone for the Kings Red (hopefully here in March). Choosing the spec is fairly straight forward, choosing the colour is tougher, i was going backwards and forwards between Silver, White and the Kings Red. They all look good but I really do like the Kings Red! Just hope it looks as good in the flesh!

Finally found a Dolphin Grey on 18’s. I love the 19’s but couldn’t throw the extra money at my lockdown drive ornament.
-
Talking of Dolphins, this one here looks particularly nice

-
Hard to see from photos alone, but does not seem too dissimilar to my Pure Grey, which absolutely love, Black and Reds are colours that really blend well with it,
Lee, is the Dolphin grey darker or lighter than the pure grey?

It's a fair bit lighter than pure grey. If you look at Volkswizard's recent YouTube review, you'll see it very clearly as he has the new car parked next to his TCR.

Moonstone Grey on the Mk8 in the Volkswizard video is lighter than Pure Grey. Dolphin Grey is metallic and similar to Carbon Grey from the Mk7, albeit maybe not quite as dark.

Hi All, New Poster here!
Been following this forum for a few months, been a very useful source of information!
I ordered a Manual GTI last week in Oryx White.
-
Being the original poster, I have ordered a Dolphin Grey GTi Clubsport, 19 inch Adelaides & HUD.Looking forward to March!
-
Ordered Deep Black for a couple of reasons. (1) It looks good, (2) Needed a change from Red, (3) Couldn't justify paying for red when it was 'free' on the MK 7. Also added 19" Estorils (had to)!
-
Red wasn't free on the mk7.5 though... Neither was white... It was Purple Nasty that was free..
-
Red wasn't free on the mk7.5 though... Neither was white... It was Purple Nasty that was free..
Thought Ruby red was ditched after 12 months or so, then there must have been a free colour which I thought was white?Red was free on Mk7 though?
-
Red wasn't free on the mk7.5 though... Neither was white... It was Purple Nasty that was free..
Fortunately, Purple Nasty (a.k.a Black Rubin, although I prefer the name Purple Nasty ) had a fairly short life. I think it was replaced by Pure White as the free colour on performance Golfs - PW was certainly the free colour on performance Golfs at the end of the mk7.5’s life.
-
Anyway, King's Red (aka old man red) is more than not free, it's the second most expensive colour.
-
white
-
white
Ooh confession time???
-
I think silver and white are the 2 standout colours, certainly on the Clubsport.
Which is probably a reflection on the lack of imaginative colours available too tbh.
-
I can't believe they dropped TR. When I had mine I thought a metallic red would be great and was thinking KR was the answer but unfortunately it doesn't look vibrant enough. So at this stage RS looks best.
-
Just sat in a Moonstone Gti. Very very impressed actually. Was expecting it to be rubbish but it was all very nice.

My only surprise was the Adelaide alloys. I thought they looked a bit odd.

None of the current VW range rims are great. Whilst I really dislike the standard 18" Richmond alloys, the Adelaide aren't much better, especially for the extra price.
-
white
Ooh confession time???
I was dreaming of a white Christmas.
Just like the ones I (didn’t) used to know..
My only surprise was the Adelaide alloys. I thought they looked a bit odd.
I was passing VW a week or so ago and popped over to have a nose because they had a couple up! GTIs and about half a dozen new Golf GTIs and I wanted a closer look at them.
The mk8 GTI is one of the least photogenic cars I’ve ever seen so I was slightly surprised how much improved it looks in the flesh (still pig ugly from some angles but not as hideous as I feared).
Most of them were completely standard spec with 18’s but one had some options and Adelaides.
Having a bit of a history with alloy wheels I had a good look at them and came to the conclusion that they very much look a Borbet design (could well be wrong) and the spokes are thicker near the rim to reduce pothole buckling and also more likely to make them nearer to a flatter disc to improve aerodynamics, with the polished areas of the spokes designed to make the wheels appear very large diameter. The latter will be a boon on the Clubsport to balance out the big willie spoiler aesthetically.
-
Dolphin Grey Clubsport - pick it up on the 4th
-
I was driving on Xmas eve and saw a Mk 8 GTI (I think) whizz past when I was at a junction. It looked like it was Lapiz Blue. Could that be?
-
The only shade of blue for the Mk8 GTi is Atlantic Blue. Lapiz Blue is for the R only.
-
I've not seen many mk8 golfs on the road at all actually, and the non performance ones have been around for quite some time now. It's kinda weird. Sounds like it's all gone a bit wrong for vw.
-
The only shade of blue for the Mk8 GTi is Atlantic Blue. Lapis Blue is for the R only.
It was at night, illuminated by my car lights as it flashed past, it may well have been Atlantic. Regardless, it looked well. Even though blue’s not my colour, it was smart. 👍
-
Took delivery of Kings red with the Adelaides fitted.
-
That's exactly what I have ordered! (and very excited). What do you think so far - appreciate it is probably very hard to be objective.... How is the ride with the 19"? Thanks. Nick.
-
Took delivery of Kings red with the Adelaides fitted.
Congratulations. Did you add DCC or not? Interested to see what you think of the ride.
-
Took delivery of Kings red with the Adelaides fitted.
Did you have a Mk7 golf before?
-
Previously been driving a 2015 WRX STI so the ride in the Golf is much more comfy even with the 19” and having the dsg makes it more enjoyable in traffic. Over the past years my wife has had a mk5 / 6 and 7 gti plus mk7 r so will see in time how it compares the past GTI’s. It’s certainly less firm than than R and although less power there’s enough to have fun albeit very limited in the time I’ve had the car. As the weathers not been great will have to wait to see how it compares.
As with previous comments the settings get a bit of getting used to which I,m still doing but there not as bad as many reports suggest. Do agree on the lane assist being to intrusive so switch this off as soon as start the car.
-
Lane assist is just a fact of life with modern cars unfortunately. Same if you bought a Kia.
One thing I'd be looking at, while you can't turn it off and have it permanently stay off forever, I've seen BMW sorts talk about being able to turn down the steering intervention to a low level. It keeps coming on but at least doesn't try to crash you into cyclists so much. Not sure if the Golf will let you do that.
PS congrats on your new motor - I am jealous!
-
White!

Interesting indeed.
That’s a German mk8 Clubsport. Fortunately, Lime Yellow isn’t a colour option on UK mk8 performance models. It just looks wrong IMO.
-
Not choice I’d go for but each to there own.
-
I think you’d have to be quite brave to go for it even if it was an option over here.
-
Just braved the VW configurator.
3 colour options on the R, 3!? Love how even the 'free' colour has the mysterious 'additional costs may apply'.
Options list is the usual level of helpful too, just give us some more money, we can't be tasked with explaining any of these!
-
Yeah. Only blue, black and white for the R I believe.
-
At least the lime yellow distracts your attention away from the iffy front styling

It does look fabulous in that video
Maximus, options are a personal thing but honestly I think the car needs 19’s. Spec them. Nothing wrong with moonstone though.

Yes, I’m warming to the mk8 Clubsport and it looks good in white, but I think it’s quite a colour sensitive car and IMO doesn’t look great in some of the available colours.
If I was considering buying one it’d be a choice of only two colours; Pure White or Moonstone Grey, and I think Moonstone Grey would win, although I’d be quite happy with a white one.
VW just need to offer the option of a decent set of wheels that aren’t diamond cut .
-
I’d have gone Moonstone if I’d factory ordered, such an easy shade to look after and I’m a fan of grey anyway.
The polished wheels are a shame, I reckon it won’t be long before something like the black Estorils are available as either stand alone or part of a pack, same as the black roof and mirror caps like on a Polo GTI.
Just as easy to add your own wheels though and take them with you when you part company with the car again. At least that way you don’t suffer the horrid wheel spats.
The standard Richmond alloys have actually really grown on me, they just sit far too far into the arches, same as a mk7 but 2mm less offset again
-
Kings Red looks pretty decent here:

That dealer isn’t far from me. I might take a closer look.
Not sure about KR though. I think I’d pick one of the greys... probably Dolphin grey which looks excellent in some videos but in some pics I’ve seen, it does seem a bit dull/flat so I’m not sure.
-
It’ll be interesting to know what you think of it if you pop over.
There was a KR GTI 245 on the same Adelaide wheels on it when I went to collect my car and it looked quite nice, far better than in pictures, it’s quite a deep colour. I was never a fan of Tornado red, Flash red and other VW reds. There were a few standard spec cars there too and the one I was expecting to like the most didn’t quite do it for me in the flesh on an overcast day - Reflex silver. I think the gloss black accents on an R will set off the Reflex much better assuming it becomes available to order in that colour/shade.
I also saw a Dolphin grey 245 GTI and liked the look of it but think the black CS accents might get a bit lost against that colour. Some people will see that as a good thing I suppose!

Got to see a MK8 GTI up close while my 7.5 was in for servicing on Friday. I must admit, photos don't really do the MK8 justice and it was more impressive than first thought, even with the standard wheels. Interior - I appreciate is has been discussed to death but that did leave me with some doubts, although I would have to experience it for myself before coming to a verdict.
Note the small pieces of orange tape covering the door gaps, so staff can see if the doors have been opened in this Covid age.
I was advised by a staff member that I should not have been walking round the showroom (didn't realise - sorry!) even though I was wearing my face covering.
Looked good in white, but most colours do look good under the showroom lights as opposed to UK grey skies.

While out on my evening run just now i saw a golf 8 coming towards me- with the full width light bar across the front- it looked absolutely brilliant.
Not sure what model it was but was enough to make me stop and look.
Talking of which, how come we aren’t seeing pics from mk8 gti owners. It’s almost like you’re embarrassed.

I had a mk8 Golf coming towards me a few weeks ago while I was driving home pre-lockdown. If was after dark so don’t know which model of mk8 Golf it was, but it had the illuminated full width light strip.
I personally thought it looked a bit tacky and gimmicky, and reminded me of some cars I saw in the USA in the 1980’s / 1990’s with a full width illuminated section between the headlamps (can’t remember what make / model they were).
But hey, it’s good we don’t all like the same thing .
Agree on the lack of mk8 GTI owners pictures. Come on GTI owners; let’s see some pictures of your pride and joy!

Guzzle - well spotted, I did indeed, and to be honest, that did look more the real deal. Perhaps I should have posted that one up!
While I was killing time, I guess looking back at the many Mk7.5's on the forecourt, the MK8 does show it up a bit with its fresh 'face', but for sure, I did not think to myself, oh - I should have waited for the MK8 when I climbed back into my 7.5.
I spotted numerous GTI's in the yard adorning their delivery stickers and scribble on the windows, all of which I think were dolphin or silver. No Kings Red.
-
In case you missed my evaluation of the colours...
So back at the dealers, I got a chance to look at some other GTI's he had and spot some differences.
White - the one I drove. Filthy. It got totally minging, the headlamp washer spray marks are still on the roof, the back end still sucks up muck. Don't choose white.
Kings Red - was my favourite. No longer. Its a sort of burgundy. The GTI red flashes don't match the KR colour. Looks not great at all. Reminds me of the colour my grandparents' car was. Urgh.
Dr Evil Grey - looks great actually.
Dolphin Grey - I wouldn't cry if Japanese fishermen killed all of these and took them away so I don't have to buy one.
Reflex Silver - oh yeah baby! This looks brilliant actually. The black bits contrast nicely, as do the red accents. Definitely the best colour I saw

My car is very shy as every post on the internet ever says mk8’s are butt ugly and Richmonds induce projectile vomiting immediately on sight...
It’s been unused since I got it home, surrounded by boxes in the garage and blocked in by two other cars. I refuse to have a third car covered in salt from commuting, would only use the thing in the dark for going to and from work and can’t go anywhere else as we are in lockdown so photos are, err, pending! :lipsrsealed:
Some teaser pics peeking between boxes?

fredgroves, hurry up and get that silver GTI ordered so we can see some pics
-
Haha, come on, it’s a perfectly good looking car. Though i do agree those alloys aren’t nice looking.
Easy enough to put right!
-
I actually don’t mind the standard wheels at all, there are plenty of worse ones out there.
However, I already have the cure for the standard wheels, just need to decide on tyres at some point.
And moving back onto topic...

Ordered mine today. Silver, totally standard with the swatsticka alloys

Still don't see why there is so much negativity towards the 7.5/8 standard alloys - although I do like the brescia's - I love my parkers and think the richmonds also look absolutely fine!
-
I like the Parkers and Richmonds too. Maybe we need a poll....
-
When I bought my car (delivery exactly 1 year ago today) I really wanted the Brescia's as they are a more attractive wheel. Test driving Bresica's (19's of course), I noticed immediately the ride harshness against the my soon to be traded in Scirocco on 18's.
I did put a post up at the time Parkers v Bresica's as I really valued opinion.
I thought about it and did not think the Parker's looked that bad after all. Much like the MK8 I saw in the showroom the other day, the standard wheels, ok - not amazing, but not as bad as the photos seem to make out.
A year on, no regrets on wheel choice.
Sorry for deviating off topic again!
-
I just think it's a shame they only offer the choice of one eighteen and one nineteen. Changing wheels for third party ones is not without potential insurance minefield problems and as you say choosing nineteens has potential negative effects on ride, extra co2 and extra tyre costs. Quite frankly it's a bit disappointing from vw on a 34k plus car.
-
That's a good point, Fred. On the A3 S Line there are 3 x 18" options.

Look at the number of dealers switching cars to 19s. I’ve never seen that on a new gti. Anyone else?

Never recall seeing that before. It is a clear indication that even the dealers realise they are dreadful. I also thought this selection of dealership photos of a new Clubsport were amusing - lots of photos but not one photo of the side of the car with the wheels on show - https://www.facebook.com/BarnettsVolkswagen/posts/3737095549662848

Agree.
Personally I wouldn’t fit an ‘older’ alloy design to a new iteration of car but each to their own

Quite frankly it's a bit disappointing from vw on a 34k plus car.
Agree, the insurance side of things is a potential minefield, as each insurance company will have its own specific approach to modifications, so how receptive they’ll be to a policyholder changing the wheels (or making any other mods for that matter) is a big unknown.
I’ve changed the wheels on my last three VW’s. On the last two cars, I changed them for wheels from the VW accessories range of alloys. There was no change in premium for the first wheel change, but I was charged an additional premium of around £18 the second time.
This time on my current car I bought non-VW wheels, although there are exactly the same spec (width, diameter, offset, VW OEM centre bore size, and pretty much the same weight) as the OEM alloys and are TUV approved and JWL certified. There was no change in premium for my current wheel change.
Agree that the wheel choice offered by VW is disappointing - particularly when they don’t generally offer an alternative to diamond cut alloys that they seem to be obsessed with .
-
Look at the number of dealers switching cars to 19s. I’ve never seen that on a new gti. Anyone else?
Assuming these cars left the factory with the standard 18” Richmond alloys, I wonder what the dealers are doing with those wheels? Is there much of a market for second hand Richmond alloys fitted with (presumably) Bridgestone tyres?
-
Yes there is,I just bagged a Richmond spare with a Goodyear tyre for 250 from my local dealer.

That's cheap as chips if it includes a new tyre. 👍

It did include a new tyre(Goodyear eagle f1),couldn’t believe that when I went to collect it today I was handed a wheel in a box and a new tyre....told me it was extra for fitting lol
Shall fit it myself as a matter of principle (have access to tyre machines).

A few.... it was a dealer stock car...GTI DSG 19's, DCC, HUD and some others.
No idea how its going to ride on the 19's, DCC is the insurance policy lol.
-
Congrats fredgroves!
That sounds like a perfect spec, and after doing it once I just couldn’t face a six month wait for a new build car when there were pre-built ones available. It’s bad enough waiting a week once that decision has been made!
I’ll reply to your test drive thread in full if I get the chance over the next few days. Bit of a busy work schedule (understatement) right now though.
Really pleased you’ve finally settled on the one we all knew you would  but these processes have to be gone through.
-
Congratulations!
-
Good choice of colour Fred - that would also be my choice. Nice spec too, and the added bonus of no long wait for it to be built.
Edit; On the subject of your concerns over keyless access; this is the section from the mk8 owner’s manual on temporarily disabling keyless access. It seems you can also permanently disable keyless access on the mk8 too;
Temporarily deactivating Keyless Access
The Keyless Access unlocking function can be deactivated temporarily so that the vehicle cannot be unlocked and started through misuse by unauthorised third parties:
Lock the vehicle with the button on the vehicle key.
Touch the sensor on the outside of the door handle once within five seconds → Fig. 1 B . Do not put your hand around the door handle when doing this. Keyless Access is now temporarily deactivated.
You can check that it is deactivated by waiting for at least ten seconds and then pulling the door handle. It should not be possible to open the door.
When the vehicle is next unlocked, it can be unlocked only using the vehicle key. The keyless locking and starting system Keyless Access is reactivated the next time the vehicle is unlocked.
Permanently deactivating Keyless Access
Keyless Access can be permanently deactivated in the Infotainment system so that the vehicle cannot be unlocked and started due to misuse by unauthorised third parties.

Thanks guys!
Think I'm going to wait for a 21 plate just because I might as well - not like I'm going out much and I'm keeping the Mk7.5 until the new one arrives.
SRGTD - not sure if the "permanent" fix kills just entry or start as well.... i hope its just entry, start getting killed would be a pain because its going to involve holding the key up to start the car (like when keyless has a flat battery).
Maybe OBD11 can be used for a different fix if not.
Don't get me wrong, if the scum weren't hacking it, I'd keep keyless entry (wouldn't pay for it but that's standard on all Mk8)
-
Not sure if it’s directly related but you might have to dump your key in the cup holder next to the key graphic if you disable keyless before it’ll start(?)
I’ll have a play at the weekend if I get chance.

That would be OK, I'd probably throw it in there anyway. Please have a play though, would be good forum knowledge.
-
So what happens if you leave your key in and forget to take it with you?
Does it stop you from locking the car, and if so what's to stop someone jumping in and driving off with your car? :undecided:

Its just like leaving the key in the ignition...
TBH the F56 we have and the F40 I drove yesterday (both Minis lol!) are keyed remote entry keyless start and I just chuck the key in the cupholder when i get in. Did it on the BMW like second nature yesterday!

Yeah but if you leave your key in the ignition the engine would still be running. I'm talking about switching it off with the button but forgetting to pick your fob up when you get out

Good point, I’ll maybe do a separate thread which might be risky as I’ll just fiddle with things and see what happens only to be shot down shortly afterwards by someone with a working brain that’s capable of reading a manual and following actual instructions.
“Just” setting my central heating timer nearly ended up with it being detached from the wall with the biggest hammer I could find.
My father in law is one of those strange people that can do DIY successfully without major cardiac arrest. He always says “when you run into a problem just walk away and come back later with a clear mind”
Now to me that walking away would probably involve running out into the road shouting, screaming and tearing clumps of hair out.
Come to think of it my FIL has no hair...
So what happens if you leave your key in and forget to take it with you?

I think there’s an insurance assessors definition for that scenario and it’s not a polite one.
Same as anything involving a key or pass card, you have to train yourself into a habit
-
Seem to remember the F56 goes ping pong bong if you try to exit without the key.
It can't stop you of course, but it is like leaving the key in the ignition.... Don't think I've ever done it with the mini mainly because my reaction when getting out of the car is to lock it. Too many years of tissue memory. I often lock Mrs G in the car accidently because getting out and immediately locking the car is such second nature.
(I tell her its accidental of course )
-
Now this wouldn’t be news to most people but I’m boring. Perhaps it’s down to manufacturers offering limited palettes rather than actual buyers preferences?

What is ‘interesting’ (well, on a wet Sat morning) is orange, green and yellow on the increase......
-
I wonder what that would look like if every manufacturer offered a full spectrum of colours?
Its definitely driven by a restricted choice and then further skewed by the limited number of car models that make up the bulk of UK sales.
Eg if Porsche had some whacky colours it wouldn't impact it if Ford and VW only offered boring ones even if every Porsche was sold in purple.
Car colour choices definitely are fashion like clothes. I remember the silver years, then the white years... these days battleship grey is the rage (not just cars but decoration on houses etc).
Black is always popular but I never understand why.
Whatever the free colour is on any car probably sells more than any optional colour too - unless its Purple Nasty

Clubsport, Reflex Silver, 19” Adelaide Wheels, Winter Pack
Nice one! Congrats on the purchase! Any estimated build date??
I was strongly considering reflex silver myself, love the Tungsten Silver on my mk7.5 GTI but decided Moonstone at the last minute!
-
Ahhh OK winter pack. I have that too. You know there are two different winter packs? Just heated front seats or heated rear too.
The product code for the front only version i noticed was "ww1". That doesn't sound pleasant, mud, blood and bullets... Eek
-
Yeah I noticed, I only ordered the fronts and it was just out of principle really as my MK7 had it as standard.
I also noticed that the winter pack says it adds the heated steering wheel too but it’s a standard feature of the car. A bit cheeky if you ask me.

Not really cheeky. The heated steering wheel isn’t part of the winter pack on performance Golfs, GTE or the R-Line models as its part of the car’s standard spec, and the option pack price reflects this. The option pack description in the brochure - ‘Winter pack including heated steering wheel’ - is somewhat misleading, but you have to look at the details of what’s actually included in the pack at model level.
From the price list and spec brochure;
- Life and Style; Heated front seats, heated windscreen washer jets and low fluid warning light and heated leather trimmed multifunction steering wheel. Price; £550
- GTI, GTI Clubsport, GTD, R, GTE and R-Line; Heated front seats, heated windscreen washer jets and low fluid warning light. Price; £270.

Thanks. I ordered the car on Monday the 18th of January and was told 12 weeks which I think is standard but I was reading today about the global semiconductor shortage thats effecting VW and the whole car industry. VW have reduced the working hours of thousands of workers and are making 100,000 less cars in Q1 2021. Audi are furloughing 10,000 staff members. Don’t know if anyone knows anything more about this?
-
Think the CS looks really smart here.

That really looks class! Nice find
I'm tempted to change my order for Moonstone to pure white and the 19's
I think the white in this video is Oryx White. The Clubsport definitely needs different wheels from the Richmonds.

"Black style" is something I've seen them talk about in Germany.... no idea what it means.
Edit: From VW Germany:
Illuminated strip between the headlights and door handle recesses
Exterior mirror housings in black
-
Black mirrors and a black line in the front mask.
Like the r-line in the video...
https://youtu.be/pIvlIXMo0Aw?t=83
-
Ahhh by playing with the German configurator.....I see!
It deletes the red stripe on the front of the GTI and replaces it with black.
I also noticed that now they are showing that the front splitter and the side trim (under the doors) is black - not because of the "black pack" but even without it.
It was body coloured before.

Just ordered Clubsport in Dolphin Grey, Winter Pack, Reversing Camera, DCC and Adelaides
Been quoted 20 weeks delivery. I'm not in a hurry so not a problem. Maybe the software glitches will be (mostly) sorted by then
