Post by: spirez on 15 October 2005, 23:05
Top lad!

Worked his arse off to get me an excellent quote on my 8v GTI. Think you even had to chase the manager as he was walking out of the office at one point!!!

Plus we get a discount as part of this forum so give Martin a try.

hi martin,

sounds like you are the man when it comes to insurance..

I am just about to renew with adrian flux.
I am presently 3rdPFaT on a 1300 gti lookalike golf mk2.
but on the renewal i am changing to an 87 GTi 16v, but i cant decide whether to stay 3rd party or change to fully comp.

My difficulty in deciding is that the excess is £470. Although i have put a value of £1500 on it, if i had an accident and it was written off what would the actual value be??. because if it was only a £1000 or less then it wouldnt probably be worth paying £470 excess and might as well get 3rd party.

Any opinions? or know what an 87 D-plate gti 16v, lowered 20mm on nonstandard alloys in good nick would be valued at?.

Thanks for reading.

Hello mate!

Unfortunatly from an insurers point of view unless you have an agreed value on your vehicle then the insurers will only pay you what they see as the "book value" regardless of what you tell them the vehicle is worth (check your documents, where you have the value it will normally say market value or maximum value £1500 not minimum), and on an 87 GTI then unfortunatly i would be surprised if it was much more than £500.

On any GTI i would recommend you get an agreed value (i know adrian flux offer these as well) and that way at least you will be definatly pait out what you or i or another enthusiast would pay for the car but without seeing it myself its a bit hard to give an exact opinion on the value.

With regard to TPFT v Comp its really up too you, the way i look at it is to add up the cost of the insurance and the excess and then compare that to the value of the car eg if your insurance for comp was £1000 + an excess of £470 then you would be paying out £1470 to get back £1500 in the event of a claim.....for the sake of £30 prob not worth so may as well just save the money and go TPFT,  it but depends how much they have quoted you. However you do get added benefits such as windscreen cover etc on comp.  :undecided:

Obviously these are just my personal opinions so its up to you! (so if you go TPFT then stick your car in a ditch dont come to me )

Hope this helps (and makes a bit of sense) a bit, let me know if you need any further info!

hi, thanks for the overview. that confirms my suspicions about the values and think i will try and look at getting an agreed value or just go TPFT, but dont worry i wont blame you when i stick it in a ditch.! :lipsrsealed:

Just thought/realised that HIC are just a sister company to AF and therefore quotes wouldnt actually be the same. Would you beable to do me a price, maybe you can help sway my decision.!?, i better go get my ten posts so i can use pm. if its okay then i will send you my number .?

cheers
tim.

Hello mate

dont mind having a look for you if you like but tbh as you pointed out AF are our sister company so if you are an existing customer of theirs then the best i am allowed to do is to match their renewal rate (they garantee to beat any price anyway on renewals), just depends whether you would rather come with us......
