Title: Do you regret your colour choice
Post by: Sootchucker on 04 September 2020, 08:54
When I went to order my GTI back in early 2018, I was pretty much decided on going for white, but then in the showroom, under the bright lights was a MK7.5 R about to be collected in Indium grey and it looked great, so at the last minute I changed my mind and ordered that instead.

To this day I've always been on and off about the colour. On a nice sunny day when it's just been washed and the sun glints off the metallic flake I really like it, but most of the time under dull grey skies, I do think it looks quite boring. In hindsight, (having seen some on the roads), I think I would have much preferred Atlantic blue (or much more Lapis Blue if it wasn't just for the R).

So, has anyone else regretted their colour choice, or are you all very happy ? Just for a bit of fun for a Friday.

I had five white ones on the bounce so I guess I must quite like it!
I can’t vote as I have a mixture of reasons but I still think white is the best shade for a mk7 and it contrasts well with the black and red GTI accents.

I had limestone the first time and hated it pretty much for a whole 3 years.

Got white now, its as offensive as my fridge and I feel neither joy nor sadness when I look at it. It was cheap, what was the point of spending good money on another colour you feel ambilivent about?

Yes, VW's colour pallette for the UK is poor.

I'd love to be let loose with the German one!

I had an Indium and loved it and then got the chance of the Tungsten and was unsure but it was the only Performance one I could get my hands on via a lease so went for it. Turns out it was an awesome colour and you really don't see many on the road. Had so many different colours to it depeding on the day and really worked well with the red details.

Then at the last minute, out of nowhere I decided to order Tungsten Silver. Never regretted it, although I do sometimes see Isaac and think I wouldn't have regretted that either.

On the whole though, the palette choices are all very bland.

Can never understand why they dropped Reflex Silver for the 7.5. In my opinion the best colour ever which is why my last Mk7 was bought as one of the last new Mk 7 Reflex Silver GTIs when the 7.5 was already out.
Reflex Silver is a classic colour and lesser Golfs have, I think, remained available in that or v similar.
Does anyone know why they dropped this colour for the facelift?

I swapped to Oryx as I fancied a change from TR. I like it but don't love it. I wish I'd stayed with red really but hey-ho, worse things have happened at sea.

I believe it was the least ordered colour by a long way on the Mk7, so they ditched it.

Why VW UK only allow a subset of VW's colour pallette is a mystery.

Reflex Silver has been brought back and is available again now for the Mk8.

I really love blue cars, but hadn't seen Atlantic blue at the time so wasn't sure if it would have looked ordinary in dull light too. I wish I'd have changed my mind at ordering time. I don't hate indium, as I said in certain lighting it looks great, (and does really well at hiding the dirt), but really wish VW UK were more adventurous with the colours offered.

BMW offer a beautiful blue (Misano Blue) and MB offer a nice one too. Why are the VW UK's colour schemes so bland. If you take Red out of the mix (as not everyone like a red car - no offence), when you are stuck with White, Greys, Black or Dark Blue. At least the R gets Lapis blue - shame the other performance models don't get it offered too.

I *suspect* the colour choices are do to with some sort of value judgement around PCP GFV's or Das Welt resale values.

What you don't want is to be giving different values for colours I suspect, so you pick a load of safe colours.

Although having said that, the "purple nasty" seems to break my conceptual rule ;-)

I swear that was offered as the one zero extra cost option to make people spend more money!!!

Possibly reflex silver was seen as a bit old hat - from ~2000 everyone wanted a pure silver car before that evolved into more grey silver before going back to white as the fave. Certainly the sales figures seem to reflect that broad public group think.

I'd love to talk to VW UK about what their thoughts are on this subject.

Black Rubin! What a truely awful colour. Used to see one near my work and it looked as bad if not worse than the configurator!

Turmeric Yellow was also available elsewhere in the range (GT / R Line / R etc). AFAIK it made no difference to GFV's. 🤷‍♂️

A variation of it is currently a Mk8 launch colour too.... I guess VW UK are probably cursing that, but they can't influence that.

Its both garish and horrible at the same time.

Much prefer the in your face colours that Ford or Renault used on their turbo nutter models. No half measures there!

The more conservative colours will look better in 10 years time, though I don’t expect many people buy with that in mind.

Not my cup of tea either. Lime Yellow they call it, but to me it'll always be Mountain Dew  :undecided:

I do look at the colours available for the Leon and the Octavia and wish I could have had the Golf in one of those. What's more SEAT don't charge extra for metallic paint.

Yep, with the amount of people leasing and PCP'ing these days, most buying decisions won't be made thinking that far ahead.

I doubt VW or (anyone else for that matter) will have any trouble shifting a GTi in one of the more enduring appeal colours.

Kawasaki Racing Green! I love my Kwakas!

TBH the one colour I really wanted a Mk7 in was the flat grey that finally they did with the TCR. I almost bought a TCR just for that. Audi and Skoda both offered that years ago - in fact I want to say Audi was the first. Its an epic colour I think, especially if you ditch all of the chrome for a full black look and add some 90% rear tints.

Well Sootchucker this has really given me a wry smile today.  I did the exact opposite.  I have taken delivery of my 20 plate GTI PP DSG a few wks ago in Atlantic Blue and I really can't decide whether I like the colour or not - and I'd love to swap it for Indium grey!

I had two Tornado Red Golfs before (GTI and GTD) and really loved the red, but I couldn't have three in a row the same.

The Atlantic blue also has a lovely fleck in the paint visible in strong sunlight which looks great - and it also looks fantastic toward dusk on sunny evenings when the colour becomes really dark - looks lovely.  The trouble is the rest of the time eg under grey skies the colour can look really badly flat, plus it shows up the dirt badly (much worse than Tornado Red which hides the dirt v well).

So there you go - if you lived on the south coast we could do a swap :O)

I bought mine second hand and colour wasn’t hugely important. I ended up with Isaac Blue, and the only day I’ve seen it looking blue was the day I bought it. Every other day, it’s grey. I have a grey car.

We have the Atlantic Blue, I didn't want black, white, red, silver or grey in flat or metallic at the time as we had done those colours to death and we found a dealer with an Atlantic Blue in stock who offered a good deal on our p/x. It is a bit of a "strong" colour and I wasn't sure when we first got it, but have come to like it, it seems to contrast especially well with the red GTi badges the Performance model has.

I keep it fastidiously clean,  and the car always attracts compliments wherever we go in it..............

But if I had a free choice it would be Isaac blue..............

I have the Dark Iron Blue Metallic, and I really like, don't actually think I have seen another one this colour.
Does look dirty quickly tho and the paint seems quite soft as I have picked up a few bonnet chips although it has done quite a few motorway miles:sad:

The paint is quite soft, although it does harden over time.

I've quite a few stone chips on the front of mine, most of them are from the first winter I had the car.

Dropped in at the local VW Dealership - the Demo was a 3 door Manual Isaac Blue car with Art Velours and Bresicas ..... bought it in 20 minutes- loved the combo.

My last GTi back in 05 was a Mk5 in Bleu Graphite, bought in left hand drive as I was living in France..I love the contrast of the dark blue next to the red details.

We get a lot of compliments about the car when it’s out and about.

Let’s hope we get Oak Green on the Mk8.

When I finally decided on the R it was always going to be lapiz. It’s a beautiful colour and very rare indeed.

Saw an Atlantic blue R on black prets though the other day and that colour combo was lovely.

Oak green on the Mk8 would be stunning.

My Mk2 is Oak Green and I love that colour. Thinking back to the late 80's, green seemed like an odd colour to choose for a GTI. You would have thought red, white and black would have been the go to colours, but luckily the bloke that ordered mine had good foresight.

Oak Green was my favourite colour for the mk2 GTI. I used to park next to one in my work car park most days in the early 1990’s. The owner took great pride in his car and it showed, and it got more than the occasional admiring glance from me .

I was set on Atlantic Blue and even got the dealer to sound out any in the VW network, but I slept on it and started to get interested in Isaac Blue.

It was a colour I had previously dismissed but reading in the forum here, it got a lot of positive vibes.

So I did switch last minute to Isaac Blue and my dealership had a car actually at their site. I love the colour but under typically UK cloudy skies it often looks grey rather than showing off the blue.

Admittedly I do love Atlantic Blue also,  but have no regrets with Isaac.

ceramic coating , keeps it swirl free and seems to resist chips too

@Candy Turbo; I’d be surprised if a ceramic coating provided much - if any - protection against stone chips, especially projectile stones travelling at speed that’ve been flicked up by the vehicles you’re following.

If your car’s ceramic coated and it’s stayed free of stone chips, I’d say a) you probably drive leaving a good distance between you and any vehicle in front to minimise the risk of projective stone damage or b) you’ve been fortunate to a greater or lesser degree or c) or a combination of a) and b).

PPF is probably the way to go for anyone really wanting to minimise the risk stone chip damage, but it’s an expensive solution to the problem.

I can confirm that a ceramic coating definitely does not stop stone chips. I had Gtechniq on my previous GTi and the front bumper and bonnet suffered with the usual stone chips.

Absolutely right. If a 35 micron ceramic coating could resist stone chips, someone would have developed 1mm thick bullet proof glass with the tech.

To me this is the downside to professionally applied ceramic coatings. At least a user applied sealant can be topped up when you get a chip.

My Clubsport is red and I love it, didn't order the black roof it came with which made the dealer sweat a bit until I said I liked it.
I do regret ordering the 19" Brescia wheels instead of leaving it with the default Quaranta, but when I ordered the car I didn't imagine they would offer Brescia on just about everything!
But my main, and I mean HUGE, regret is not ordering the wingback seats. What was I thinking?

Being able to get Lapiz Blue was part of reason I went for R as I wasn’t keen on colour choice for a GTI. If I got a GTI now I think I’d go for Oryx White but does seem a lot of money for paint (if buying new).

I am liking the Kings Red Metallic, so that would be on my radar of colour choice now as well.

I agree with comments about limited choice with white, grey and black. I was looking at a MB model and that seemed even worse.

When they produce the most popular colour survey each year, I think is it because people want that colour....or that is all they are offered.

You only tend to get exotic colour choices on sub golf sized cars. Once you get to golf and bigger it all becomes very grown-up until you get to super cars. I always thought that's probably some sort of thing about women car owners... Women like a colour generally and women more likely buy a smaller car. That's not me being sexist, just observing car makers and owners!

So after some replies telling me my favourite Reflex Silver was “so yesterday” and one of the least ordered colours on the Mk7, guess one of the few metallics offered on the Mk8 GTI?
Maybe RS is now “so next year”??

just talking from my experience , since i had my car gyeon coated i havent picked up any more chips ! my car is nt used much but before it had a chip after every outing !

Always wanted white and still think it's the best colour for a CS...

What was I thinking?
got to say ordering an ed40 from new without the wingbacks is madness 🤪

Next month I will have owned my RS Golf GTi for 7 years and I am still loving the car in this the colour. I do not intend to sell this anytime soon. Not my daily driver anymore though...I am on my second BEV now.

My wife wanted red, and I wanted the Indium grey.  We compromised on black even though I said I wouldn't get black again after our 2010 GTD.

Its a cracking colour when clean, but pretty bad when dirty.  The colour pallette we get in the UK is a bit crap to be honest.

Worse on the Mk8.... and it seems the Mk8 colours are even exactly the same in Germany too!

Have had GTD (white) and R (Lapiz) and now the Pure Grey and to be honest liked the previous colours on them cars and would live with both now happily as the GTD had a lot of black contrasts, that 'stormtrooper' look and the Lapiz was signature and really pinged and worked great with the Pretoria

But the pure grey on the TCR is by far my favourite with all the black contrasts, the Reifnitz, the red on calipers and the badge and stripe and the 90% tints. Feel got the very best of the MK 7 series fall into my lap with the TCR in terms of performance, styling and that Akrapovic and its one of the rare times that not look at anything else aside from the next echelon of cars with any envy.

I know, I know...  a stupid mistake... wish they were like the Clubsport S, with no 'normal' seat option to protect idiots like me from ourselves! ;-)
