My 16V had now got 159K on the clocks and i'm doing an oil change..
What would be the best due to the milage?? it does sound quite tappety at the moment
Have to buy in the morning hence the urgent part
-
if you can get it, silver synta from the stealership
-
10/40 fully.
-
you gotta love the synta silver! Available from VW main dealer for little money!!
-
Fully synth??? I thought i would need a thicker oil because of the milage?? Very thick!
-
The Synta Silver is a semi synthetic.
-
yeah i always go for synta silver, GSF do it for £11.50 for 5litres i think!!
-
Well just been down to halfrauds and got some 10/40 mineral stuff!
I'm selling it by the way so i don't really need fancy stuff
-
lol synta silver isnt fancy i just asked for regular oil first time i went vw and got synta silver cause it was the cheapest :D
-
so just to re-cap! my valver is of a similar milage and is also (i think) is sounding a bit tappety although it may just be a rattle that i cant find!! So what type of oil do i need?
when i tend to go to the stealership they dnt tend to know what they are talking about in parts so when i say what oil do i need for a valver they look puzzled and give me the first on the shelf.

synta silver, GSF do it for £11.50 for 5litres! is the only one you need and a genuine filter, gsf do them also!
-
Just ask for a bottle of synta silver oil, they should know what you're on about. If they are complete muppets then you'll have to tell them it is made by quantum, its 10w40 and comes in a big silver bottle
Make sure you get a proper oil filter and the little copper sump washer too ;)
Bear in mind that if the rattling doesn't stop either the tappets have had it or its your cam chain thats rattling.
-
yup your cam chain could look like this if it's quite rattley

It hasnt been serviced since april i think so it is prob in need of it fairly urgently!
So i need a proper VW oil filter aswell, not a halfrauds one?
cheers
guys
-
yup proper oil filter or decent equivilant from www.gsfcarparts.com or www.vwspares.co.uk

Not tried the syntra but totally agree about the VW filter is a total must
I use Castrol Magnatec for my 8valve
The wifes mk3 driver has done high miles so it gets Castrol LongLife.
