Title: GTi PP front brakes
Post by: Sootchucker on 10 August 2020, 13:24
Hi guys, looking for some advice. I'm thinking (thinking being the operative word)of swapping my standard front brakes from my non PP GTI (312mm) to the GTI PP set up with the bigger 340mm discs and larger calipers with the GTI logo. To be honest, the standard brakes are certainly good enough, but I've always liked the look of the PP front calipers so this would purely be from an aesthetics point of view only (therefore I know there will be more than a few comments of "must have money to burn" or "I wouldn't bother" etc. - but please humour me.)

I found a German seller who (I think) has the full set up, brand new and all genuine VW (never fitted). The kit consists of two 340mm discs, 2 PP calipers (with Logo cover plates), 2 calipers carriers, 2 sets of OE VW pads and 2 off disc dust shield back plates.

This is what he is selling:

The price I think is pretty good (just over £500 delivered from Germany), but assuming it's not a non-starter with my insurance company (with a silly premium hike), are these a straight bolt on or will there be a difference in the brake pipes (e.g. diameter) and/or the master cylinder ?

I don't want to go to any silly big brake kits etc. as I'd like to keep it OEM. Any advise please ?

I can't imagine there would be any other problems (not all that helpful, sorry) but if you are happy to spend the cash, they do look great. Have you thought about changing the discs for TCR/CSS ones and save a bit of weight and add some more bling?

One thing though, PP rear brake discs are different too, vented. Not sure if that would make any difference in terms of braking balance.

If going to the hassle of fitting and telling the insurer.... I'd fit some better ones. VW OEM brakes are far from state of the art and probably just as expensive as the other options.

This might not be helpful but I've watched a few Darkside Development vids on Youtube and noticed that they do a lot of bigger brake swaps but they also say that you will notice the most difference just by changing to a stickier pad.

They were swapping standard pads to Pagid Racing if my memory serves me correctly.

Not saying I agree because I've never tried a Racing Pad but they have far more knowledge than me.

Actually noticed Sooty say:

"so this would purely be from an aesthetics point of view only"

And I found this for you Sooty:

I'd change the OEM pads that come supplied with the kit to some aftermarket ones as the OEM pads create lots of dust.
