Title: Thought of the day...
Post by: Exonian on 30 July 2020, 17:13
Next time you wince at paying £165 at your friendly VW emporium for them to just drop the oil, dent the sills, smear the steering wheel and make a nice video telling you your barely half worn brakes need changing soon and that your 4mm tyres are nearing the limit spare a thought for your RS6 owning distant cousins.

Just had a text in from a mate who’s had his mk5 GTI in for a bit of work at the local VAG indie.
There’s an RS6 in there with its whole engine out to enable the timing chains to be changed.

Labour bill alone stands at 26 hours.

Ouch.

Ouch indeed

That will be a hefty bill. At least its not main dealer prices.

I certainly wouldn't want the bill for that! Some of these cars look tempting when a few years old with a massive amount of depreciation. I winced when my Audi dealer quoted £1200 for a cambelt change on my old V6 A4..

I've seen plenty of people with 2nd hand luxury cars discover why they only cost £3k after a few years....

Also - my best war story for a pathetic problem that turned into a nightmare - speedo cable.... that connected to inside of a gearbox.... engine out, gearbox dismantle.... to change a broken speedo cable.

Five quid part, 10 hours labour.

I have an invoice for a 911 gearbox rebuild in year 2000 for £12000.
Works fine now thankfully! 😀

I had today a £2.50 bulb for DRL changed at main VW dealer. The labour came to £99.50; total bill to £102...

DRL's are LED's.... aren't they? Well, on a 2018 GTI anyway

Certainly lightened the wallet.

I was thinking that. Perhaps it's a different car being referred to. If the bumper had to be loosened off to get the headlamp assembly off then I don't think the cost was too unreasonable. Having done it myself, I can confirm that it's a right PITA. Audi were going to charge me half an hour's labour to replace the light switch on my A4 which literally took a few seconds as I watched the service desk (not even a technician) assistant do it. Thieving gits.
