Hi All,
I’ve been driving my Mk5 Golf GT Sport 170 since I bought it new in 2008.
I had an original GTi Mk1, when they first came out years ago, which I enjoyed very much.
I have today picked up my nearly new 2019 GTi PP, manual box, Irdium grey, with just over2,000 miles on the clock.
Very pleased with its looks & to drive. Just need to get used to all the gizmos fitted (a bit different to the Mk1). I’m sure I will have a few questions over the next few months, that you guys could help me with.
Cheers, Chas.

Hi Chas...
-
Congratulations and welcome.
-
Welcome Chas, I haven't got to grips with all the tech yet, doubt if I ever will!
-
Good choice.
Welcome aboard.

Welcome!
Must be one of the very last manuals to have been registered.
I’m guessing ordered in late 2018 and delayed, as mine was, due to WLTP so reg 2019.
Enjoy......

Hello Chas,i’ve Just done exactly the same as you, except i’m still running around in my Mk 5 GT SPORT for the time being and my GTI is red.
How have you found the build quality compared with your Mk 5?
The bonnet on my MK 7 feels like a biscuit tin lid,it’s pink underneath-ok,no one will see it I suppose.
The top of the wings where they join the A pillar move with little pressure,in fact the bodywork is wafer thin.
Have you seen the big hole in your rear diffuser yet (250x100)?,what is that all about-just paid £70 for a part to fill it.
Despite all the cost cutting (and there is a lot!),I love it-but will it last as long as my mk 5,hmmm,i’m not too sure.

I thought exactly this when I swapped my 2003 Audi for my MK7. But, the outer skins like the wings are just the visual parts and don't need to be thick, that's unnecessary weight. The strength of the car is in the chassis underneath and in the design. If you have an accident, thicker stronger outer panels will need to be replaced the same as a thinner one but cost more. And with lighter panels you get the benefit in better economy every time you drive the car. That might be total bollocks but it makes me feel better

I think the only bollocks in there is that you think VW will charge less for thinner panels than thicker ones!

VW already engineered a lot of cost out if the Mk5 when it launched the Mk6. Mk5 was quite hefty.
It was reported quite a bit at the time that VW engineered weight out of the Golf when it launched the Mk7. Some of it is cost cutting, but that wasn't the only reason it was done. It was to improve economy, performance and emissions
Article here shows the weight savings.

I much prefer my Mk 7 GTi, the Mk5 TDi was like driving a tank in comparison.
The GTi handles better and is more agile. I must say I haven't noticed the hole in the rear diffuser yet, I will have a look when it stops raining. So far very happy with the change.
Cheers all. Chas
