Title: Apple CarPlay for 66 plate car?
Post by: Paul70 on 28 June 2020, 10:23
Just looking for advice on what is required to upgrade to Apple CarPlay on a late 2016 car.

I have the APP CONNECT icon as an option and understand this needs to be enabled. My dealer confirmed this was just a simple procedure, no hardware change was required and it would cost £250. Great I thought, but I have a nagging doubt the USB socket needs upgrading not because of the socket but the wiring from the socket, which makes sense as a special cable is required to connect the device to the USB.

I have tried the search option but couldn’t find anything conclusive.

The car was built in week 44/45 of 2016 if that helps

Yes you should be all set if the car is saying app connect is not activated.

Pay the money and job done.

A friend had a similar issue of the app connect on his Skoda a few weeks ago. I mentioned the possibility of the USB being incompatible?

No issue, software activated and it works fine now.

Only reason I mentioned Skoda on the GTi forum, is the main dealer who also has a VW franchise charged £130 and he did not buy the car from them before you ask.

The USB socket is simply industry standard. They’ll supply you with a couple of cables to connect either an iPhone or Android phone.

As an FYI, I activated App Connect at the dealership 48 hours ago and still get the error message on line that I’m not the registered keeper.... If anyone has experience, it would be useful to know if VW systems take days or weeks to process the change.....

Thanks for the feedback, my main concern is the cabling at the back of the USB to the infotainment system which may be different in the MK7 cars but you’d have thought the hardware would be compatible as there is an option to enable APP Connect but don’t want to assume this. Based on feedback I will book the car in.

The hardware is all compatible. It’s just a software activation - for a small fortune!

App connect is not the same as carnet services....not sure how you activate carnet other than on a brand new car. But for sure it's only vw that can sort it out.

Thanks. Will give it a couple of days, see if their systems catch up, if not, another trip to the dealership....

The thing I'd check is if what you have bought is even car net... That's a subscription and I'd doubt it is transferable, you'd need to pay for your own subscription.

Jees, show's what a mess all this connected stuff is.

App connect, that allows car play/android auto, IF, it's not active would come alive immediately activated by the dealer and you could plug your phone and use immediately.

Car net, that's a whole different load of nonsense that allows exciting things like sending nav destinations from your laptop to your car. This is car specific and transferable with sale. You battle VW websites to register using the VIN, then wonder why you bothered.

So... if you are trying to use car play, have paid, then take it back.

It's only a mess because vw are milking it. They think this sort of stuff is a revenue stream, when these days it's more expected for nothing... When Google offer stuff for free

It is a revenue stream if it’s good.

BMW ConnectedDrive is an equivalent that’s worth paying for (more so on later cars, granted) as there is genuine utility to it. VW’s offering is poor so it’s not worth the hassle or cost.

I would not be paying £250 - just contact VW Retrofit in Redditch. I think he charges £80 or there abouts and it takes a couple of minutes. Great guy and retroftted the OEM reverse camera to my previous GTI. Couldn't recommend him enough. I take every opportunity to stay away from main dealerships and use 'car people' who actually care about your car. 1. VW want to charge you an obscene amount of money for it 2. There is a high chance of the dealership damaging your car whilst its there whether that be an alloy curbed or a door ding etc

Thanks for the tip clarky92, how much did they charge for the reverse camera retrofit and how long did it take, if you don’t mind me asking?

It was definitely a few hundred, maybe in the region of £300, I can’t remember exactly. I was in and out in around 1 hour

In order to get App-connect (CarPlay/Android Auto, not to be confused with Car-Net) working on a MK7 (it's standard on the 7.5) you will need ALL of the following:

1. A MY16> car built from Week 22 of 2015
2. MIB2 Headunit with compatible onboard software*
3. An Apple compatible USB socket, which has a dual 'out' on the back of it (Part number 5G0035222E)**
4. An Activation code (Part number 5G0054830A)
5. Dealer Activation via OBD***

The £250 cost that is normally charged is made up of two parts. The cost of the code(circa £200), and the dealer labour to activate(15-30mins). If you need a new socket and/or software etc etc the cost will be higher.

For those saying it is a rip-off, you have to bear in mind that EVERY car sold by a manufacturer which has an active CarPlay ability, the manufacturer has to pay Apple a one-off license fee. So if a car has CarPlay activated at a later date, VW have to pay Apple, hence the charge.

Any 3rd party doing it on the cheap (normally only offered on Nav Pro units) is essentially 'hacking' the unit to bypass the VW online activation.

NOTES
*In theory all MY16 cars should have had the MIB2 loaded with the necessary software ready for CarPlay be activeted, but there are some cases of the full software needing to be updated on very early MY16 cars in order to get the Activation screen. In a VERY small number of cases some MY16 cars were fitted with a MIB2 that can't be software upgraded as the MIB2 hardware was missing in the glovebox.
**There is talk of some early MY16 cars (pre September 2015) being built without this compatible socket, so even if you have a MY16 car, if it's early you might need the socket upgrade also.
***Cars with the Discover Nav Pro HU can be activated without connecting to the dealer OBD. Cars with the standard Discover Nav needs activation using the code and then plugging into the VW OBD computer for activation

HTH :)
