Title: Rattle/ vibration steering wheel
Post by: clarky92 on 25 June 2020, 10:04
I've had this rattle/ vibration noise for a while (6+ months). It happens on anything other than smooth tarmac. Happens even off the throttle jut rolling. I have narrowed it down to the steering wheel airbag.

I have previously had a similar rattle fixed by VW for the drivers knee area which was much louder and that hasn't come back, so it ins't that. I've checked all the usual culprits just in case like mirror surround, any loose objects in compartments, sun glasses holder etc

I think I know the answer which will book it into VW as you dont want to be messing around with the steering wheel airbag. Im just wondering if anyone else could think of something to check before going through the hassle of taking the car in.

Thanks in advance

I'm sure you have but have you checked the sun visor?
My wife's car sounded like it was from the steering wheel  but after weeks of investigation narrowed it down to the visor.

I'm sure it seems like Golfs have become more rattly over the years for some reason. Trying to pinpoint odd knocks and rattles from interior trim has been the bane of my Golf ownership (on my 3rd), oddly enough my mk5 was fine, my 2015 mk7 was very rattly, my current 2016 mk7 seems to develop one randomly, and slamming my knee into the driver's side knee area or randomly banging on the centre console sometimes seems to work (sigh). Currently suspecting the area above the rear view mirror (sigh again)

The hunt continues...

Open the passenger sunvisor and see if it goes, mine drove me mad and the sound could seem to come from anywhere but. In the end I just stuck a tissue between it and the headliner which sorted it out. Not ideal but free and handy when you need to blow your nose

Thanks, I'll try that! One day I'll go insane and strip out every trim piece and then we'll see what rattles... :undecided: And then I'll have a Golf GTI Super Leggera. With no rattles.

You legend, I was convinced it was the steering wheel but no. I used a bit of kitchen roll as a test between the drivers sunvisor and roof material, no more rattle!

Going to find a piece of black felt for a more permanent better looking fix

Thanks again
