Title: Factory defect which could lead to rust, get checkin
Post by: Mikeyd1 on 15 June 2020, 21:33
On the rear underbody of our cars there is two outer grommets on the box section that can be removed if you was fitting the Audi jack pad kit , just inboard of the rear jacking point. when u remove the far end one it is down to metal around the edge of outer hole, it’s not big but it’s there. Some are cover slightly in wax so it’s hard to see but with your finger wipe the wax and you will see.

How do I know this? Well went to fit my jack pad kit and when pulling out grommet I could see then I drove to dealership and went out back where all the new stock cars are waiting to be pdi, I removed at least 8 of these grommets and every single one had it, some worse than others but all had it.

Explanation: when our cars our made in the factory the car is cradled in 4 holes in the frame 2 in front to in back and it’s this which cause wear through the primer coating,

Is this a problem maybe/maybe not as I think the grommet and some wax could possibly seal this but 2 of the cars had little tiny bits of rust but was ver tiny about 6 mil by 1mil long but all the same it’s not good enough, I have tried posting images but for the life of me I can’t

You need to use a photo hosting site such as postimages.com and upload your pictures to that site. Copy the ‘hotlink for forums’ link for each picture and paste into your post.

Alternatively, as you’ve posted the same topic over on golfmk7.com with pictures, you could just copy the link to that thread into this discussion thread.

@Mikeyd1 I’m fine thanks. I think the last picture you posted over on golfmk7.com shows it quite well.

The body shell does go through a zinc galvanising process in the factory before the primer coat is applied, so if the zinc coating isn’t damaged it should be OK. A quick and easy remedy for anyone who’s concerned and wants to sort it themselves would be to apply a few coats of Waxoyl or a similar product. It might take a few weeks for some dealers to look at it as many dealerships workshops probably have a backlog of work as a result of Covid-19 and lockdown.

I think mine maybe through the zinc coating slightly as I had a very small bit of rust and my car is only 6 month old. So I had a chat with golfdave and I might just touch it it or I can just wax and seal or I could get the dealer to sort it out, I already have had them take a picture and send it off, but do I want them messing around with my 6 month old car and I’m not sure if this would be classed as a defect as every car I’ve checked was the same.

I’m assuming it affects all Mk 7’s & 7.5’s, with eldest of the former coming up to 7 years old - would be interesting to see what they look like?

Yeh it effects all mk7s. I wonder how they holding up. But all mk7.5s were quite bad at the dealers. One gt had a little rust that was on a 69 reg  and all the new stock were all quite bad.

Just checked mine - no signs of rust but lots of wax around the grommet. Mine was a September 2018 build (didn’t pick up until end of December due to WLTP issues)
Thanks for the heads up though - I’ll get some Dinitrol and give the area another coat - can’t do any harm👍

Not that I could see. Assume best to remove the grommets, give her a good clean in the area, let dry, wax and replace the grommets?
Assume they are a straight pull out?

Checked a 64 plate today there was just a little rust so it doesn’t really seem to spread

If it’s galvanised, it shouldn’t, but worth looking out for either way.
