Title: Clubsport GTI clutch burning smell when reversing
Post by: Team GTI on 15 June 2020, 07:53
Hello all, this may well have been discussed already somewhere, but here goes, I bought a clubsport gti edition 40, manual,  2017 reg, 12,000km on the clock, ive only had her a fortnight, she still has the new car smell. When I reverse up steep hills or reverse with passengers the clutch stinks, like rotten fish. I have a year warranty on the car as i bought it from a dealer. Does this mean the clutch is faulty, or am i doing something wrong? I've had two VWs previously, Mk5 Gti was my last car and i never smelt a burning clutch once. I haven't had any issue driving forward, no slip, no smell, just perfection really. Your informed opinions would be most welcome.

Are you slipping the clutch when you reverse or do you have the pedal fully released?

Sure it’s the clutch and not the EPB failing to release correctly in reverse?
Just a thought as I would assume you would have greater issues going forwards under load under a higher gearing - reverse is a very low ratio.
Does it still cause an issue with the EPB off?

Electronic Parking Brake is a good call.

It's my fault, i was over working the clutch. It's completely different to anything I've driven over the years, you need to release the clutch almost fully to do it properly. Anyway, all i good and i appreciate the advice and am glad it was my ignorance and not a fault 👍

That's all good then. You may wish to add the details of your car to a signature strip, that way should you have any future queries they can be answered more accurately. Oh, and pictures of your car, especially being a CS, are always welcome!

Updated a few bits in the profile, is there a secret button for picture upload, it's more confusing than the clutch

The Mk5 and the CS. The Mk5 was lowered so it had a real aggressive look with the mk7 wheels, front grill was sprayed, made a huge difference. I'm thinking of making some low cost mods to the CS that won't compromise the warranty. Black badges and black tips for the exhausts for starters, possibly 15 mm spacers to push the wheels out a bit for that aggressive look.
