Further to my post below, I just wondered if anyone has changed their GTI wheels to Pret style 19's and have any pics they can share please?
All the better if they are the silver rims on a black car.
Thinking of going that route, and it would be useful to see what they look like on the car. I did a search on here and found pics of CM Wheels gunmetal versions on a red car and thought they looked really good.
Cheers

Have a look at autotrader, all CSS will have them
-
Also some TCRs have gloss black Prets.
-
Thanks matey - good suggestion!

The CM Wheels silver Prets are very bright silver.
They’re a completely different shade to the blue-grey OEM spec wheels.
There were a few pics of them fitted to R’s when I last visited VWROC which was quite some time ago.
They don’t look great IMHO.
The gunmetal coloured CMW Prets look good and will hide brake dust well.
Again, they’re a very different shade to the OEM R/CS/CSS Pretorias.

Thanks, that's useful to know. Would you say the grey Cmw wheels are darker or lighter in grey/gunmetal colour than the oem grey Pret wheels you commonly see on Golf R's? With my GTI being black, I don't want the wheels to be too dark against the black paintwork.
Thanks

Link to grey / gunmetal 19” replica Prets on CMWheels website that you can compare to any pictures of the genuine article you’ve found;
https://cmwheels.com/product/19-vw-golf-r-pretoria-style-wheels-gloss-gun-metal-vw-audi-5x112/
IMO they wouldn’t look too dark on a black car, but we all like different things, so only you can really decide if you think they’d be too dark on your GTI.

Ok, they’re totally different shades of actual grey but going on the light scale for reasons of comparative shade light/darkness using VW Golf grey paint choices as a guide: CMW silver would be like Reflex Silver, OEM Pretoria silver would be like Tungsten, CMW grey like Indium and obviously black is black!
Or does that confuse even more?
-
No that's fine - appreciate you trying to help.
My dilema is not helped by be me being colour blind! 😀

must admit, Prets do look gorgeous on any Golf.

Love em

The golf they belong on is an R though. Not really a fan of wheels not on the car they are supposed to be on. Don't Pretorias buckle easily though? Or was it the GTi 19s that buckled.

I think there’ve been a few (maybe quite a few) owners over on vwroc.com who’ve suffered buckling or cracks to the 19” OEM Pretoria alloys on their Golf R’s.
It seems it doesn’t have to be particularly large or deep potholes or a badly maintained / neglected road surfaceS for an OEM 19” Pret to sustain damage. The point of impact on the wheel seems to be a big factor; if the impact is in line with the point where the spoke joins the rim of the wheel, then it seems there’s less likely to be damage than there will be if the point of impact is somewhere along one of the larger sections of the rim between the spokes.

Very nice Jaceyboy 👍🏻
Are those the oem or CM Wheels you have fitted?
If the latter, what centre caps/ stickers are you using as I believe the standard VW one's won't fit?
Thanks

From the colour, they look like the 19” Pret replicas in gunmetal / grey from CM Wheels, unless @Jaceyboy has a set of OEM prets that have been refurbished in a darker colour. The OEM blue-silver colour is much lighter than Jaceyboy’s wheels.
Edit; looks like owners over on vwroc.com who’ve bought 19” Pret reps from CM Wheels have bought stickers and applied them to the plain centre caps supplied with the wheels.

Thanks SRG!

Yes, Jaceyboy’s are CM reps.
Yes, they are the grey versions.
Yes, they use stickers for the badges but Polo caps *might* fit.
Yes, CMW will do little owners club discounts if you contact them direct.
No, they don’t belong solely on an R.
18” Prets were available as options from the VW accessories catalogue for any model of Golf.
19” Prets were options on the CS and TCR and standard fit on the CSS.
Cadiz are the R specific wheel and those were the general optional upgrade wheels for most markets in 19” too.
Mind you, CMW do Reifnitz reps too which would look good in dark grey on a GTI.
That way you’re not pretending to be anything as no Golf was ever offered with grey Reifnitz from the factory!
-
I've been looking at grey Reifnitz but the TCR I've ordered is grey. Black might be a better colour for a grey car. I'm also looking at lightweight alternatives.

Yes mate from CM wheels, only thing I would say is after two years they are showing signs of degrading in colour, not sure if its related to my cleaning products

Thats your personal preference isnt it?, I think they look great and the TCR has pret option, so what?

they only look good on certain colours of golfs for some reason.

White is one of the colours they look good on.

OP did you end up getting 19" Prets? Im about to get a set today and fitted this week so can provide pics if needed. They will be genuine gloss black on a black 7.5 GTI PP.
-
Prets look great any Golf. They were standard fit on a Clubsport S and optional on a TCR so will are fine for a GTI and will look very OEM.

Thanks Clerky92, some pics of your new wheels on the car would be great. I have not made a purchase yet - still debating on colour. Can't have my ideal combination which would be the oem VW grey colour, but on the CM Wheels (cheaper and potentially stronger wheel) rim. I think the CM Wheels gunmetal colour may be too dark on my black car, so will potentially go for the silver CM Wheels (but others have suggested these are quite bright!). First world problems and all that................
Cheers

I was undecided on which colour for a while. I kept looking at black CSS’ with OEM grey coloured Prets but in the end black on black just looks mega and you can’t go wrong. If you do go for black Prets, I would 100% stick with 19” as 18” will look too small.
Or if your feeling like something a little more standout, get the reps, refurb them in bronze. Black pearl paintwork, red callipers and bronze wheels especially in the Pretoria design will look amazing

Please excuse me if this has been covered elsewhere, but is it not therefore possible to buy for example CM prets and take them to a decent body shop/alloy wheel company with the VW OEM pret paint code and ask to refurb/refinish them in VWs original paint colour?
-
Thanks for the pics Clarky - your car & wheels look great.
Rob Z, yes of course a repaint is always an option, but I’m a bit reluctant to do that on a set of brand new wheels.
