Anyone know.  Been happening last couple of months.  Sometimes can hear it when driving?

That actually does sound like the headlight washers. I've only heard mine once which was right after I replaced the blown fuse. It's since blown the fuse again for some unknown reason. You could test the theory by removing the fuse. It's number 36 on the inside fuse box. See: https://fusesdiagram.com/volkswagen/fuses-and-relay-volkswagen-golf-6.html

 I think you may find that it's the headlight self levelling  set up, my daughter had something similar,
for no reason her headlights would go up and down for no reason, first point to check would be the levelling switch next to the dash light dimmer these do fail.

Thanks.  That was spot on.  It was the headlights randomly levelling.  I moved it into the 1 position and I can't hear it now.  If it starts up again I will replace it
