Yes I know where that comes from originally and it’s the wrong colour.
Just been having a look at used GTIs.l’m after a 3 door manual, with no more than 5-5500 miles on it.
So i’ve sat down having a look and writing down those that fall into that criteria.
Up to posting this,i’ve only been on PistonHeads and out of the 9 cars suitable,7 are white, the other 2 both red.
These are all dealer 2019 cars with standard spec,no extras, average price £24,000,average miles 3900.
Is there a reason for so many white cars,or is it just coincidence?
Also any thoughts on the average price?
-
Why are limiting yourself to such low mileage? A manual will be over a year old, probably nearer 2? Better to have a car thats been used a bit.
-
White was probably the no extra cost colour, red the cheapest cost option?
-
I do plenty of miles per year and don’t change my cars very often.
This is a big purchase for me,I haven’t spent this sort of money on a car before, but at nearly 50,i’m gonna treat myself.
-
I'm the same. Do about 18k pa and keep cars a long time. If I was looking at a year old car I wouldn't be worried up to 12k on the clock. My last car did 177k before dying so an extra 5-10k at the start wouldn't have made much difference. I once bought a 2 year old Polo with 6k miles - nightmare. I can only assume that it did a 2 mile round trip to the shops each day and never warmed up.
Only reason I mentioned the mileage is that it might give you more choice/colours, that's all.
-
That’s a good point,my current car (07 mk5 gt sport) which i’ve had approx 5 yrs has 82000 on it and still feels like there’s loads of life left in it.
I bought it with 5000 on it.
The midlife crisis has kicked in and i’m having a car i’ve always wanted.
Now up to 11 cars-8 white,3 red.
-
Think your main limiting factors are a 3-dr and manual. Not a popular combo unfortunately for later GTI's hence why mileage will also cause a problem. Good luck in your search.
-
Anything you put in as a criteria narrows it...
3 door.... manual... mileage... and then the chances that anyone decided to pay good money for one of VW UK's shades of grey...
If you deselected any of those things, how many do you have then?
-
White was probably the no extra cost colour, red the cheapest cost option?
It's amazing that VW (or any other car manufacturer) doesn't have to justify that distinction.
It's definitely not that white paint is so much cheaper to produce, nor that "solid" paint is cheaper to apply, seeing as they now lacquer all colours. On the Polo GTI and Beats, Flash red is the free colour and white is the lower than metallic cost option. Stranger still, the non-performance Polos (excluding beats) have Urano Grey as the no cost option and Fkash red is unavailable. That's absolute confirmation that the list price of paint options has no justifiable rhyme or reason, it's just greed.
-
Jim,personally I think a 3 door looks better, but that is only my opinion and with what’s available out there,i’m In a minority.
Fred, because i’m not buying new,I know i’ll not get exactly what I want,I knew this when vw stopped the 3dr/manual option.I did think there would be a few more colours available from the last 3dr/manuals sold, that fell into my criteria mind you.
I could compromise and that would give me more choice, but at the moment due to the country’s predicament nothing’s happening,so the hunt continues.
-
I've got 20 come up on Autotrader, up to 10k miles but there's only 3 over 6k miles with the highest on 7. Mostly red and white as you say.

Nowt wrong with a red or white GTI. Red or White R on Cadiz wheels on the other hand...

Hard to beat indium grey in them imo

The OP is after a 3dr manual with low miles, once you filter for these options it only leaves 1!

I do think the Golf looks really good in a 3dr. However, to use as a daily car, for most people it's just not practical whereas the 5dr is.
-
Yes,I should’ve said that-5 doors are far more practical and suppose the shift to Dsg reflects modern driving especially in town/city traffic, crawling along 1st/2nd gear.
I’m old school because everyone I talk to who has moved to Dsg and other modern automatics loves them.
Just not for me at the moment.

It's just they make a lot of sense for an everyday car. I run mine as a company car, so it gets used for commutes (normally!), trips to clients, nursery runs, pottering about and a fair few blasts out on the roads near me in the Peak District. Wouldn't have a manual as an everyday car again as the DSG/autos are so good now. But everyone has different situations and requirements.

I think that the 5 door being more practical depends on the person. I don't have children and rarely have rear seat passengers in my car so don't regret going down the 3 door route at all. I've always personally preferred the look of a 3 door over a 5 having lusted after a 3 door mk2 16v in my youth and with the option being dropped in the mk8 (as well as the looks) I can see myself sticking with this one for quite some time. I am one of the rare 3 doors which isn't white or red
Before ruling out the DSG, I would suggest test driving one. Before this car if you had ever said to me that I would have been driving an auto I wouldn't believe you... but having done a fair few miles in mine, 45000ish over 3 years which is even more impressive having been out of the country for about a year of that, I wouldn't go back to a manual now. I've had the TCU remapped on mine to give the car less control over changes when I put it into 'manual' mode but most of the time the full auto is just fine for me... having said that, I do have a 70 mile round trip motorway commute half of which is average speed check zones.

This could be your last chance to go new 3dr manual GTI, don't miss out! The DSG is good don't get me wrong but I do miss making my own mistakes instead of the gearbox getting it wrong

Ha,nice one-the decisions been made Watts,i’m sticking to a 3 dr manual.
I like hearing other people’s opinions on the subject tho, good and bad.

If you're really against a red or white one and push the budget a bit more there's a 3 door Clubsport S 12000 mile manual on Autotrader at the moment in black, snip under £30k. Probably the only thing I'd consider changing mine for.
-
It’s not that i’m against red or white-I love red cars and although i’ve never been a fan of white cars, the more I look at white GTIs,the more they’re growing on me-happen as well!
I just thought there’d be more choice that’s all.
As for the clubsport s?-would love one,but just not practical for the miles/journeys I do,plus i’d have a hard time convincing the missus on that one.
-
I loved my TR GTI, it's a great colour that radiates and never failed to make me happy! Go with red!
-
Hmm....
I had three door cars when I was a teenager up to about 30 years old, I suppose that coincided with getting hitched!
I've never really liked them since, the door tends to be too big and unwieldy to open in a tight car park space and it isn't so easy to put your coat, shopping, beers etc on the back seat, I also tend to prefer the look of a 5 door car in anything conventional eg Golf, (not in my aspirational car a Porsche Cayman, obviously!).
We were offered a fantastic deal on a 3dr Polo GTi a few years ago, so bought it, but that was a big mistake, for us, neither of us liked the impracticality of a 3 door and I didn't think it looked any better than a 5 door. Our view obviously!
Fast forward a few cars and she has a 5dr GTi Performance, manual ....
I had a 3 litre auto BMW recently and liked the auto, but overall we both prefer a manual.....
Obviously we are all different, interesting to hear other peoples preferences, but happy with our choice...!
-
I had a 2015 DSG and wasn't impressed so after only 2 weeks sold it and went back to a manual.
Early March this year I tried the newer 7 speed DSG and it was exactly what I wanted so purchased the car and so far delighted although its only being used once a week at the moment.
-
You'll be able to get yourself a lovely Edition 40 with that budget, much more exclusive compared to a budget spec ultra low mileage GTI.
Buy on condition and history, not miles on the clock.

It's funny, I wouldn't ordinarily have said that I was a fan of white cars but looking at white, black or red on a Clubsport S, I can't imagine the CSS in anything but white. White tends to work quite well with sufficient contrasting body accents - think it suits the TCR too.
I got rid of a Macan GTS as my daily after a couple of months - I hated the thing despite having spec'd it and my wife suggested that I replace it with something sensible like a Golf. So I did. When she saw the seats and the rear brace, she realised that she left the brief far too open and I was expecting an argument having bought another 'hardcore car'. But she quickly conceded that the rate of depreciation and the specialness of it were obvious. No children but we have a dog and I have absolutely no issue with the practicality of the car. I did put a shelf in the boot and a WeatherTech liner for practical reasons as the mouse fur lining is a pain to vacuum. But that's it.
Personally, I'd stick with a manual. A manual gearbox on a GTI is not arduous to drive. We have DSG in the TCR (no choice as you probably know) and I think it's great but I wouldn't specify it and wouldn't have chosen the TCR on the basis of the gearbox alone if it was my choice. But it wasn't. That said, it's very easy to drive and it's a pleasure on long drives.
There is a marked difference in creature comforts between CSS MK7 and GTI/TCR MK7.5 - nav, instrumentation and so forth but the saving grace with the MK7 is that you can add Apple Car Play so it does give it a much longer lease on life. All comes down to your priorities at the end of the day.

Not that I’m remotely biased in the least, but I decided that the VW marketing people must know a thing or two about aesthetics.
They chose a white three door GTI as their launch commercial feature car.
https://youtu.be/iK20UnL_hjQ
“Regrets, I’ve had a few... “
I ordered one myself, my first ever brand new car, within a few days of model launch.
Pure White manual Performance Pack

I even had to pay extra for the colour as white wasn’t free at that time.
It’s quite a popular shade as the mk7 GTI looks good in it.
Hell, I’m on my fifth in a row! If I had to change cars again tomorrow then a white Golf would be right up there again.
My thoughts on my own GTI 3 door?
It looked great, I love the rear window line aping the mk1 Golf’s, and proper GTIs should be three doors anyway
In practice it was a PITA. The doors were too long to get out of easily in my garage or tight parking bays. I hated having to reach back to get the seat belt on (#shortarse) especially when my back was playing up.
The front seats didn’t slide forward far enough to get into and out of the back seats very easily either.
On the flip side, the natty little cup holders either side of the rear squab were cool, the interior didn’t appear to have been cheaped out on quite so much because there were no non-illuminating rear door trims or sills and did I mention it looked better in profile?
Aside from that I thought the power delivery was a bit flat, it was very good on fuel and the gear-change wasn’t the best.
The white manual R I had afterwards had five doors.
That was a much better car full stop. No wonder they’re so popular. Simply brilliant machine.
After that a white manual GTD graced my drive for a brief few weeks and that was the last brand new car I owned. That’s about all I have to say about that car...
Next up was a white manual Clubsport. Fantastic looks, fantastic handling, much more exciting power delivery than a standard GTI and a fluffy steering wheel. Recommended.
Then came a TCR. But that’s also got 5 doors plus is a DSG so irrelevant here. At least it’s white.
My advice? I don’t actually have any.
My opinion? If you want a newish three door manual GTI M, get one you can actually have some fun in every single day. Get an up! GTI
Hell, I might even follow my own opinion later this year, I don’t need a family car anymore, I don’t need nearly 300bhp and having spent the last three weeks reengaging with a manual gearbox again I sure don’t need DSG...
Oh, it’d have to be a white one too

Great post Exonian, you’ve had almost the who’s who of Mk 7 performance Golfs-you’ve nearly had more cars in that one post, than i’ve had my entire driving life-do you get bored with them?
I think the up Gti is nice, but it’s a similar size to the wife’s cinquecento she had years ago and when I drove that,my kids mates said I looked like Mr Incredible.

I‘m a jet setting multi-billionaire with a modest taste in cars. It’s all done with loose change from down the back of my sofa.
Actually I’m very modestly paid and have quite high bills and living expenses so if I can manage to do it then almost anyone can. It’s just a matter of doing my homework and taking as few gambles as possible.
I don’t have PCP deals running so can be ultra flexible,
The GTI PP and R depreciated quite heavily but the Clubsport and GTD held values really well so it all averages out.
I try and do it in smaller more affordable jumps as and when I can afford it, keeping a constant eye on the market. I don’t spend loads of money on gadgets and fripperies so treat the car like a hobby as well as a means of getting to work and taking junk to the tip.
I don’t have a magic recipe, I just do what works for me.

No, you’ve not missed anything! I’ve barely looked at a forum for weeks and weeks never mind posting anything.
We had a “lockdown“ in the UK about three weeks ago so my youngest son moved back home after having to vacate his girlfriend’s university digs. He arrived back with my other car complete with nearly bald tyres
A rare long period of sunshine meant the TCR could have its first bath for many months and was duly put away to self isolate in the garage.
My other car is an old manual Diesel and does 15-20mpg more than the TCR so it’s been put back into use full time by me (as my son is working from home) because I’m a ‘key worker‘ and have had to work stupidly long hours for a few weeks due to two of my direct colleagues having to be off medium term for Covid related reasons and workload has gone ballistic. I’ve had a much needed week off this week. Exhausted!

I’ve been driving for 32 or 33 years and have lost count how many cars I’ve had.
Like many enthusiasts I don’t ever got bored of my cars but tend to like trying new things out, be it modifying my car or trying different variations or varieties on a similar theme.
I tend to think of my mk7’s as one single car that I’ve experimented every possible permutation of!
Depending on affordability and my needs at any given time I’ll buy a model to suit and change accordingly.
Other areas of my life have been fairly constant so I divert too many energies into swapping bits of cars or the actual cars!
I think it’s genetic as my father was a lifelong coin and antique collector and we used to joke that his mother lived in almost every road in her hometown at one point or another!! She was forever moving house

Thanks Barry :afro:
I’ll have a wade through CVL’s deals, it’ll pass a few hours on a soaking wet morning!
Had been pondering chopping in my other car and getting one on a 0% PCP but decided I can’t afford it (in effect circa £4K down and £200ish a month on 10k PA) on top of my other outgoings. Trouble is I’d end up using it and mothballing the TCR. If I’d kept the Clubsport maybe I’d have gone for it.
If my son’s house purchase happens this year I’ll maybe bin off the TCR, cut my hours back as far as I can and go down to one cheaper car.

Where have you seen the cheap up! GTI deals?
Im sure Keith from central vehicle leasing sent me an email about it but I can’t seem to find the email but they have them on there site

We done the same last year after renovating our full house sold an Rs3 and my r32 for a daily Audi A4 that we don’t owe a penny on and now I can’t get her out of the dam thing

Not that I’m remotely biased in the least, but I decided that the VW marketing people must know a thing or two about aesthetics.
They chose a white three door GTI as their launch commercial feature car.

“Regrets, I’ve had a few... “
I ordered one myself, my first ever brand new car, within a few days of model launch.

What alloys are those? Me likey likey.

I bet the A4 doesn’t sound as sweet as the previous two cars though!!

Those were Rondell 02RZ’s which I chose for the OEM like styling.
Rondell are/were OEM suppliers to the likes of BMW.
Definitely summer only use though as they started to white worm a little after their first winter and the matt black sections had a finish that was quite hard to clean.
They looked really good but I’d not really recommend them for those reasons.
They were quite heavy too but strong. I hit a sharp ridge at 50 mph in a section of roadworks in the pitch darkness at 4am that completely obliterated a front tyre but the wheel survived unscathed aside from the slightest buckle (even after I decided it was far too unsafe to stop and change the tyre on the motorway contraflow so limped the circa 8 miles home very gingerly rolling on just the rim and a very flat Conti tyre!). Not something I’d choose to repeat.

It definitely doesn't although it doesn't have a drinking habit like everything else we've owned  but the need for another rs3 In my life is getting stronger by the day

There's a few decent spec Clubsports in your price range but most are DSG.
I'd try a DSG if you've never had a go, I wanted manual too but ended up with DSG mainly because of how extensive the spec was on the car. There's one massive bonus to DSG though- DSG FARTS   they're so addictive!

How does the RS3 compare MPG wise with the R32?

The mk4 r32 was slightly better than the mk5 r32 but both drank a bit more than the rs3 unless you had the rs3 off the clock

Certainly sounds like the RS3 got under your skin.
I’d love to try one myself one day.

I worked for a fleet company at the time so pretty much driven most things out there and the rs3 was happy on the school run or upsetting a few supercar owners at crail raceway

Sorry to moan - but why can people not just use the 'reply' button instead of quoting multiple posts just to add their own single line comment - make the page huge and unwieldy.... thanks :-)

... because the quotes above are given conversational context in relation to a specific element being discussed, rather than in relation to the whole topic?

Agreed, but it can get a wee bit tedious, especially when a few photos are included. 🙂

As kmpowell summarised so perfectly, just a bit of off topic chatter in a thread that had quietened down considerably in other respects. Unlike a social media thread it can’t be taken into a separate sub-thread for direct replies.
Apologies if I’ve mildly inconvenienced anyone for a few seconds. I get where you’re coming from though.
I’ll zip it now :lipsrsealed:

Unzipping large threads to read them is going to be an even bigger hassle.

Thanks chaps - much easier to read now :-)

Well,i’ve started on the list of cars I made during lockdown-the first one I looked at (website) had a woman’s face keep popping up asking if I needed help-asked her 2 things, couldn’t answer either, said she’d pass it on to the sales team, along with my details-still heard nothing.
The 2nd..sigh,has given me a taste of what i’m gonna be up against-dealers clap trap!
Got sent a nice ‘personalised’ video tho,so it wasn’t all bad.
Two cars in,naffed off already.

Ah, the old 'text chat'... I try that now and again. On the rare occasion that I don't get 'unable to connect', I invariably know more than they do or they need to ask someone else or said manufacturer isn't telling us. Pointless.
