Title: Finally some decent DSG shifters...
Post by: Jim_mk7.5 on 10 April 2020, 19:02
Wished I bought some decent shifters from day 1 as I do use the manual mode quite a bit and those daft plastic things are pretty horrible - no idea why they don't fit something a bit nicer. Not keen on the racing line ones.

Seen these via Instagram which looks great, quite partial to some proper carbon. Not sure on price but the company doing them do some really nice steering wheel retrims.

Thought I'd share - my car will be gone soon but might be of interest to a few people.

They look decent Jim. I always thought the Racing Line looked to be the best and had considered changing them on the TCR but then on thinking about it, realised that I never really bother using the manual shifters.

Only reservation I'd have relates to the feel of them. They might be a bit 'slick' and might be easy for your fingers to lose purchase if you're turning the wheel at the same time. Be interested in comments if anyone buys a set.

you can get excellent copies of the racingline ones on Aliexpress for very little, and still in Aluminium, very precisely machined for a great fit.

I paid about £40 for mine about 18 months ago and they've steadily dropped since then to.about £12!!!

I bought silver (unpainted Aluminium). I must admit that matt black.looks far better, so after a while I spray painted mine.

These are mine Chris. Painted them myself after getting silver and preferring black. Slight roughness of finish is my spraying technique - you can only really see it under high magnification on the "-" area. These are the same as the £192 racingline ones.

Are they sturdy enough? Seen a few posts and you tube posts where people have said the replacement ones are slack or have give in them.

They're plenty sturdy. Those sh!tty stick on ones that stick over the existing factory shifters are crap, but these replace the factory ones, hinge nicely on the original pin and have a nice positive press.

Don't forget though that longer shifters may have more play due to the fulcrum effect. The factory ones are more like buttons than handles, being less than half the length.

I bought mine from an Aliexpress shop called."Jogon", they do a lot of automotive stuff at a certain price point. Since the price of these dropped and dropped (from about £40 to £12), Jogon stopped stocking. Have stumbled across them elsewhere. Just need to search for Golf gti shifter in Aliexpress.

I have the same as the ones that monkey hanger went with. They get a massive thumbs up from me

They look almost OEM, and work perfectly.

I found them on eBay for about £15 from memory took a while for them to arrive from China but it was well worth the wait!

They fit securely, and feel fantastic. I discovered these from the below you tube video if you haven’t seen this yet.

Confirmation of a no brainer. £192 vs about £18 (delivered) and the cheaper ones look better and fit better.

The ridges on the back of the cheap ones feel nice too.

They're such a simple design, I've got no qualms with possible copying, there's no true innovation there, there's no patent infringement, and there's no justification for the others being £192. Matt black looks better too.

I'd guess they're exactly the same, made by one company, with multiple sellers on Aliexpress. These used to be £45 a set everywhere with free postage and the price has steadily dropped over the last 15 months to a smidge over  £15 inc delivery.

Think it would have to the ST2 shifters for me as really not sure about the Racingline/copy ones, prefer the look of solid ones.

Just ordered these:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/143460697664

Loads offered on Ebay - these were the ones most similar to the Aliexpress items above, with the pierced + and - , and the ribbed backs. Obviously the same thing, but I find Aliexpress a wee bit unnerving.

They're probably coming from the same place, "Item location: Guangzhou, China".

I have just ordered a set from Ali-Express, first time I've ordered from them. My neighbour uses ALI a lot, and has not really encountered any problems over and above longish delivery times.

Quite right, but at significant cost! I’ll see how these cheapo ones look for £17. They seem, from the video, to at least work as they should, so, if the appearance is liveable with, they’ll do! If not, and the benefit in operation is clear, then I might consider S2Ts. They are very nice looking, but if you got stung for duty, on top of the purchase price, you could be looking at nearly £300!

I like those ST2s, but I wouldn't pay a penny over £50 for them. They're machined Aluminium, not Titanium, I just can't fathom paying £200 for them.

Likewise. I'm sure they look good but the Chinese ones don't look bad. I don't use the paddles so probably won't bother but if I do, I'll try some off ebay first.

I will be one of the few who bought Racingline paddles ( from Awesome GTI).
They are a pleasure to look at and use every day.
I use them mainly for downshifts but also for pressing on when I feel like being more engaged.
After several manual performance Golfs I am ok with DSG 75% of the time. But it’s nice to vary between Drive, Sport and Manual depending on the mood and circumstances.
Hardly ever flick the stick to the left though, unless climbing a steady hill at 70 when I keep it in manual 6th to lift the revs a wee bit and cut the noise.
Would def for paddles again if I went DSG again.

No, I don’t bother with the paddles, that’s why I never got round to fitting the S2T’s.
I should probably make the effort to use them but I’m usually wafting about in D with my brain in Neutral.

Most of my commute is twisty B roads stuck behind old people attempting MPG marathons in their microcars, or choked solid with camper-vans in summer. There’s one good stretch of wide road that’s all of three quarters of a mile which has traffic lights and a 50mph limit.
I think that’s why up! GTI’s have always held much appeal to me and I’d love a used one as a second car but unfortunately I have no money and my son has a nasty habit of kerbing alloys too  (he shares my other car as he’s on crap wages and saving to buy a house)

When I used to live on the outskirts of the city I’d occasionally take my GTI/R for a spin after work when I was on night shifts to stretch its legs and wind me down after a night in the office.
Now I have nice roads to drive home on every day but not somewhere I can get up to any speed, and since moving a few miles down the road to the coast all I want to do is retire now!! Well and truly had enough of work.

The only time I use Sport is briefly for pulling out of junctions or onto fast roundabouts in traffic as recommended by Ryan and a few others in my TCR thread.
I’m just getting old and boring I think. Proof of which is I found a grey eyebrow hair today! Soon plucked that f****r out

I'm very impressed with the quality considering the price! I use the paddles a lot as I have a lovely twisty country road to work, and car feels even more special flicking the aluminium paddles compared to the plastic OEM ones! Been using for a few months now and still as solid as day 1 of installing. Can't recommend them enough!

That's a good point. They look fantastic but noticed they aren't on the GTI so might be kept for the R models only as they are on the new Arteon R as well.

Yeah, it's certainly not a brand new model. The old headlight switches look a bit dated now they have gone to buttons for the lights although personally, the rotary switch has always seemed to do a great job. My 3 Series has the new buttons and it's actually quite hard to see if you need the fog lights or to manually put the headlights on.

It is!. I’ve just looked at the one in the mk8 GTI and it’s the same - maybe even more so, as the clown’s ‘lower lip’ in the GTI has red ‘lipstick’ rather than blue in the pictures above.

That steering wheel looks sh!te. It doesn't look in the least bit befitting a sporty hot hatch, far too dainty looking.

Looks like the wheel currently fitted to the non-performance Golf (7.5) and Polo, with a bit of chrome added for the clown's mouth.

Really not seeing any compelling reason why run out MK7.5 owners will be wishing they waited. This is MK3 and MK6 all over again.

That steering wheel looks sh!te. It doesn't look in the least bit befitting a sporty hot hatch, far too dainty looking.
It's not in a hot hatch, it's in a Tiguan.

But I think it's the same wheel in pictures of the GTI interior? I wonder if badgeskins will do a red VW logo kit to complete the look?

Yes, this is the mk8 GTI steering wheel; same design as the one in the Tiguan;

That was precisely my point. Does this mean that the Golf range only get 1 steering wheel, with or without embellishments and flat bottom this time around, or do we have a worse standard Golf steering wheel?

Can't remember what it looked like in the showroom when I saw the MK8.

I think it's that the central bit isn't round that makes the aesthetics look off.

It gets worse! The lighter steering wheel now shows a clear head and ears outline!!

If the mk8 wasn’t ugly enough already, it’s now instilled coulrophobia in me!

That face just can’t be unseen now!!
