Title: Touch up paint
Post by: king monkey on 05 April 2020, 13:06
Hi guys,

Trying to get some touch up paint and wondered if anyone had used these? Found them on eBay. Only £7.99 for paint and lacquer. 15ml.

My advice is to order genuine VW paint kit. It’s hardly expensive. Order some tiny brushes off amazon to apply and your all good

VW kit is only a couple of quid more and you’ll know it’ll match.

Some official dealers are still trading on eBay so you may be lucky there.

I’ve struggled to find any on eBay, even through dealers. If anyone has a link that’s be great.

Had looked at the chipex kits. Any good?

I've used chipex on previous cars and it's excellent. It's all in the method and prep though so people will give different opinions. The VW paint is good but again it's how it's applied that makes the difference.

I've used Chipex on small paint chips and it's great, but you do have to follow the instructions. You need to take your time to do at least the paint application and excess paint removal one or two chips at a time so the paint doesn't dry out too much. The end result should be undetectable. Make sure you check the paint colour match before you start just to be sure you've got the right colour.

I've also used the official VW touch-up paint bottles from https://vwmotorparts.co.uk/ (https://vwmotorparts.co.uk/), but you'd have to check with them if they are still stocking it. Again it's good for small areas but the clear lacquer doesn't "flow" very well so it's not good for any large scuffs (like you get on the rear sill).

You will be pleased to hear it was in use this morning, just waiting a day for it to harden in the sun.... no urgency doesn't seem to translate into any more patience though! :)

Halfords are open, they get round this by supplying cycle parts, you can order online, no ideas how you  would collect though?

I suppose Lapiz is a bit niche. Perhaps in store? Worth giving your local branch a call?

Or this - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/401583143905?ul_ref=https%253A%252F%252Frover.ebay.com%252Frover%252F1%252F710-53481-19255-0%252F1%253Fff3%253D2%2526pub%253D5575376664%2526toolid%253D10001%2526campid%253D5338268676%2526customid%253DEAIaIQobChMI35uolffT6AIVzsreCh2PkArJEAQYASABEgLanvD_BwE%2526lgeo%253D1%2526item%253D401583143905%2526srcrot%253D710-53481-19255-0%2526rvr_id%253D2362909214184%2526rvr_ts%253D4fbb639d1710aaec8c53d0f2ffb2703f&ul_noapp=true

I thin the paint down a little with cellulose thinner and use a very fine artist brush and build up the layers (letting each application set) until level with car paint and then polish - works well on chips.

You can come round and do the chips on my car! Don't worry, I'll keep at least 2m away

I bought some really small modeller's cotton swabs (Tamiya) for applying the paint, possibly safer than a brush?

I was round 3 of them at the weekend looking for BMW touch up paint for my daughters 1 series. It was business as usual.

To the OP I found a cocktail stick works for me, just putting a tiny amount on.and building the layers

If the police stop you- and there are checks going on- be careful what you say to them. If you tell them you were out to get some touch up paint for your gti you’ll likely get a fixed penalty notice.

Tbh I wouldn’t go out just to get touch up paint. Really not worth it. Things aren’t going to improve if we do things like that. I have a letter on me when I go to work to prove I’m ok to be commuting.

I was also looking for bulbs for my car which I couldn't get at the first Halfords and being front-line NHS staff I reckon I qualified for that.

This is what I bought. Just thought that if it’s not vw paint then anything is a gamble.
