Hi everyone,
I’m new to the forum and have recently changed from a 7.5 R to a 7.5 GTI Performance in manual. I actually prefer it as it’s more fun to drive and engaging ! I miss the black pret 19’s on it and wondered if anyone has fitted them (18 or 19) to the GTI ? Mine is solid white and I’d go with the OEM or reproductions. There’s a massive difference in price and after reading on here it may well be worth a punt ! Be interested to hear from anyone who’s fitted them to their car.
Thanks
-
I fitted reps (CM Wheels) 19" Prets to my wifes 2014 GTi MK7, love the look, wish I had spent more money on decent tyres that had more of curb protectors on them, was going to go Gloss Black but decided on Grey in the end as Black always shows brake dust, I like the look :smug:

Prets will go straight on. Think they look great on a GTI.
-
They look good in grey, did you notice any quality differences over OEM ? I just thought the 18’s would be a cheaper option on the tyre front. I’ve got the Parker’s on it at the moment and too be fair they don’t look bad I just think black alloys would look good on a white car like they do on the R with prets.
-
VW do 18" Prets in gloss black. There's a main dealer on ebay who regularly advertises them for about £1100.
-
Is it worth spending the extra £650 over CM wheels 🤔 I’ve seen them on eBay for £1240. They don’t seem on pictures I’ve seen to look any different to OEM’s. I did also think perhaps a second hand set of Brescia or Santiago but again I can get them in reproductions too...
-
Only you can decide on the value aspect. I would say though that 18" Pretorias that I have seen on cars (only in pictures mind) don't quite look right, they look great in 19s but genuine ones cost a fortune. A point in favour of the CM wheels which seem to be quite popular. Also they would be much cheaper to replace the odd one if it gets damaged. Brescia and Santiagos are both diamond cut which could be a factor to take into account if you live somewhere that gets the roads gritted lots in winter. Why not give a set of CM wheels a go, if you don't like them and decide to sell you can't lose too much
-
If you go for the CM 18's, just bear in mind that the offset and wheel width aren't the same as the OEM version. CM's are ET45 and 8J, OEM are ET51 and 7.5J.
-
I had Santiago’s on my gtd and the salt certainly ruined them over a 7 year period ! I suppose I could have got them refurbed though. I just wasn’t keen on the 19’s due to 4 new tyres too 😬 With the cm 18’s not being the same as oem, how is this overcome to get them on the vehicle ? Sorry is ET wheel width or offset ? I’m new to changing wheels so apologies for sounding thick.

These are CM wheels 18" with winter tyres
-
The CM's will go on the vehicle just the same as the OEM's. They're half an inch wider though, so the 225 tyres will be a bit more snug than they would be on OEM wheels. They will look a little better in the arch though sitting slightly further out.
This is the difference;-
https://www.willtheyfit.com/index.php?width=225&aspect=40&diameter=18&wheelwidth=7.5&offset=51&width2=225&aspect2=40&wheel_size=18&wheel_width=8&offset2=45
-
Better to bounce through potholes with a £500 set than do the same with a £1000 plus set of wheels.
A vote for CM Wheels here.
The 8x19 ET45 reps look marginally better in the arches than standard OEM Pretorias too.
The grey ones look really good.
Would probably go Borbet FF1 in black if I was fitting 18’s personally but 8x18 Pretoria reps sit better than VW OEM accessory 7.5 x 18 Pretoria wheels.
Clubsport/TCR Belvedere/Quaranta alloys also look great on a regular GTI.
is ET wheel width or offset ? I’m new to changing wheels so apologies for sounding thick.
You don’t sound thick, we were all new to it at one time!
ET is offset, width is often referred to in inches or demoted by a J (the J is to do with the tyre bead profile used for cars).
Any questions just ask away, plenty of knowledge on this forum.

that’s great thanks ! Nice to see them fitted to a 7.5 to give me an idea. Did they go straight on without any drama ?
-
I have to say this forum is excellent with helpful members - thanks ! I’m from an era of xr2’s, rs turbo’s and cossie’s ! Yep I’m old.... As I said I bought the 7.5 r and found it got too much interest from the wrong kind ! I had it on a 30 day return policy so changed it for an 8 mth old gti performance in manual. I actually prefer it as I’m finding it more agile. Anyway so 18’s or 19’s 🤔😂
-
I did look at the tcr reps too. There’s a lot of choice out there !
-
19s do look good  TCR reps (Reifnitz presumably) sound good. I think they are a great looking wheel, nice and chunky.

They do... Too much choice DEFINITELY! Where did you get them from and do they look as good (in the metal)as oem??
-
Sorry, I may have caused a misunderstanding, mine came with the car as in OEM. Just an illustration of how the design looks. Pretorias are a great wheel but I prefer the Reifnitz.
-
CM Wheels sell Reifnitz reps in both 18 & 19”
Was tempted to sell my Belvederes back along and get a set of Reifnitz reps for clattering over potholes to save the originals.

I did see the tcr on the side but wasn’t sure if it was ‘the car’ or a sticker to go with the repo alloys !😂 I agree very nice- it’s a decision between these and the prets then ! 18 or 19’s 😬🤔

This is what I'm thinking of doing too

Cheapest genuine 19" Prets on Ebay are between £1500-2500 unless you want damaged ones. But considering all the issues with them cracking, you'd want to getting some mint ones.
Think CM wheels are definitely worth a try as huge savings.
They have 19" Reifntz in Satin Gunmetal for £500! Also, they have the 18" Prets or 19" Seville (black with polished red lip) for £500 as well which I've never personally liked in the factory grey but these do look good in this spec.

I was thinking of 18" Reifnitz from CM wheels if and when I get my TCR.

Those Seville wheels look so much better in 19”

Thought I'd share this as gives you a good idea of how a white GTI with black Prets looks. Have to say was very impressed with how this looked.

I too have a 7.5 Performance, in Atlantic Blue, and I fitted 18" genuine black Prets about a year ago. They look great to my eyes.
They are available from dealers (via ebay or walk in) and were 1100 for the set, including shipping and with new centre caps. They came with the VW paperwork and TUV cerificates etc. so legit and covered by the VW Accesories warranty.
-
19" just look so much better
-
So I’ve decided I’ll go 19’s (sod it) and it’s between the gloss black prets or the satin black reifnitz. I haven’t got dcc so hopefully the ride won’t be too brutal ! I was just about to order the reifnitz then saw the tcr with prets ! 🤔😬 Decisions decisions....

Reifnitz look far better.

That would be my worry with Prets as well although I personally think they really suit the GTI as well.

I think it’s the 19’s reifnitz then ! They are also something different to what I’ve had before... I’d better get them ordered before they close the borders 😳

I don't think you can go too far wrong either way, they are both good looking wheels. As for Pretorias buckling easily, there is quite a lot of evidence for this but since you are going for reps that isn't such an issue, certainly not as a reason to choose. It's purely down to which you prefer!
-
Like 'em both!
Just get two of each!

Depends on what diameter wheels you bought!

No they dont this was the one thing that really annoyed me

The CM reps looked great and I couldn’t see anything cheap about them compared to OEM reifnitz that I’d looked at in my dealer. All the fittings swopped straight over without any issue, very pleased and highly recommended. It’s also worth mentioning that they were packaged very well with plastic edges over the rims and plenty of cardboard.

Looking good ! It was between the prets and reifnitz for me and the deciding factor was I had prets on my previous car a 7.5 r so something different.
-
After some advice..
Looking at these CM rep prets as a replacement to my Brescias (I have DCC)
On the face of it works out cheaper than getting the Brescias refurbed but I wonder how much my insurance will go up.

or
https://cmwheels.com/products/19-vw-golf-r-pretoria-style-wheels-quartz-silver/
Not sure if silver or gunmetal will look better on indium grey. Leaning towards gunmetal.
Will these just go straight on? can I use the existing wheel nuts and will my current centre caps fit them?
Thanks in advance
-
Yes, they’ll fit straight on.
Yes, you can use your existing bolts.
No, your OEM centre caps won’t fit but your bolt caps should.
Insurance is company specific, you’d have to contact your insurer. I’ve never had an issue in decades of swapping wheels but sometimes certain restrictions to the policy are put on.
I’d be tempted with gloss black on an Indium car.
You’d ideally want to run 235 tyres but the 225’s will still fit ok.
If ordering ask CM for forum discount, it normally means you’ll get free shipping.
-
Thanks for all the info.
LV insurance say there will be no increase in premium
Looking around the R forums it sounds like they are shipped with black centre caps and I will need to get VW stickers to go over them.
Gloss black is not my bag so still looking at gunmetal.
Found this which looks good to me:

-
Not a huge fan of black wheels myself but reckon they’ll give the best contrast.
Otherwise go for the grey, I ran a set of grey CM Wheels reps for 3 years, 27k and the paint held up well.
The stickers you’ll need are 56mm from eBay at about £7 for four.
-
I have two almost new PS4S 225 tyres that I will swap over to the new rims.
If I then get two PS4S 235 tyres to match is it better to put the wider tyres on the front or the back or doesn't it matter?
-
It’s not recommended to mix sizes but Audi did it on the RS3!
I’d put the new 235’s on the back as the 225’s will wear down much quicker on the front.
-
Wider always on the back, some cars have it like that by design but I've never heard of any with wider at the front.
Also with a FWD car wider on the front would really increase the risk & severity of lift-off oversteer.
I went from 225 to 235 in 2 steps - 235s on the rear & 225s on the front, the fronts wear quicker then I put the new 235s on the rear and moved the existing 235s to the front.
I always put new tyres on the rear then rotate forwards. There are differing opinions to the merits of that, but it's what I've done for 20+ years of hot hatches.
BTW 235s on the GTIs look awesome and give a little bit more protection for your wheels. :smug:
-

Audi RS3 apparently for one.
-
I have ordered the gunmetal. Hopefully they will turn up next week. Thanks for the tip about the forum discount.
I think I will bite the bullet and just get 4x 235 PS4s so that I have a full set of tyres on my Brescias if I need to take the car in to VW. I still have some warranty left and they use any excuse to wriggle out of a claim.
The lacquer was coming off the Brescias after they were refurbed a couple of years ago when I bought the car. They have agreed to do them again for free which is a complete result. I can then put those away and pop them back on if I ever sell up. I love the brescias but the diamond cut finish is a real PITA.
I did read somewhere that polo centre caps may fit the CM wheels (part number: 1J0601171XRW). My Son has a polo so I will pop one off and give it a try before ordering any stickers.
I have also read that the wheel bolt covers may not fit without some doctoring.
-
"I think I will bite the bullet and just get 4x 235 PS4s so that I have a full set "
Good plan - probably the safest and wisest choice.
I ran 235 rear and 225 front only for a few months and didn't\don't drive it hard. But if I'd had the cash to do all 235s at once I would have.
Good luck, put a picture up once you're done.

I tried mk4 Golf (same size as Polo) centre caps on my CM reps and they didn’t fit so will be interested to hear if the Polo caps fit your set.
The bolt caps fitted in mine ok (not Pretoria reps though) but I’ve read reports some Pret reps struggle to accept VW bolt covers but others are ok. They probably buy in from more than one supplier or indeed the supplier uses more than one factory.
-
The polo caps I have (6C0.601.171) fit perfectly in the space but the clips are too short by quite some margin.
These are the only 56mm stick on ones I can find on ebay. Will give them a shot.

I guess I could get some OEM 56mm caps and just silicone them in?

Is another option might be to get some flat faced generic black centre caps (lots on eBay for around £5-£7 for a set of four) and a set of flat (non-domed) VW logo centre cap stickers? I’ve seen the stickers (and centre caps) in a range of sizes so you should be able to achieve a cost effective ‘VW look’, albeit one that looks a little two dimensional because the centre cap face / centre cap sticker would be flat.
There are also companies that’ll make centre cap stickers in a range of size options. You might be able to find a company that can produce a set with the same curvature as your CMWheels centre caps; worth trying an internet search on ‘custom made alloy wheel centre caps’ or similar search to see what you’re able to find. Assuming your search returns some worthwhile results, you may need to give them a call to explain the issue you’re having re. the correct curvature to fit your centre caps.

Should the tyre pressures on the 235/35/R19s be set the same as the original 225/35/R19s?

Yes they are the gunmetal version. I think they work well against the indium grey.
The tricky bit was sourcing some centre caps and 'adjusting' the bolt covers so they fit. Very happy with the end result.

56mm OEM centre caps don't fit because the clips are not long enough.
First I tried stickers from eBay to go on the blank centre caps that were supplied with the wheels. (This was the recommended route from CMWheels) They weren't domed enough so I returned those.
Then I found a UK based website that said they made stickers specifically for those caps. They took my money but never shipped me anything. Credit card claim going in for that as they are ignoring my emails.
Then I ordered a selection of caps from AliExpress going by the pictures of the ones that looked like they had longer clips. and... Bingo!
The normal nut covers were not too bad. Just cut about 10mm off the back of the outer plastic section on all sides leaving the full hex internal part that grabs the nut in tact. The security covers were trickier as they needed slots cut out of them. Picked up another set of OEM covers from eBay if I need to go back to stock wheels.
The best deal I could find on the tyres was from ATS. I reluctantly took the rims in to get them fitted and thought they had done a good job, however all the balancing weights fell off the wheels overnight & I hadn't even driven the car! So had to get that sorted as well.
Got there in the end. Now I need to hope my pothole spidey sense is working.

Thanks for all that first hand experience.
I’m a bit concerned about wheel nut covers not fitting perfectly and also weights falling off. Did the weights not get enough adhesion to the rims because of the finish?
Has anyone else had these problems with CM Prets?

The weights falling off was just ATS being sh1te. They should have cleaned any wax/oils off the rims before they stuck the weights on.
