Title: GTI Mk 7.5 Performance OPF 180kW (manual) - exhaust DRONE (stock)
Post by: ykoks on 09 March 2020, 20:30
Has anybody been able to resolve the exhaust drone, which occurs every time you get near the gas pedal at motorway speeds? The car is perfectly quiet when cruising lets say at around 130kph (80mph), but every time I get near the gas pedal (tiny incline, roof box, overtaking..), the exhaust drones unbearably. It literally is causing headaches. Switching modes (like sport, comfort, eco) has no effect whatsoever. I have even resorted to adding more sound deadening to the boot, but again with very little success. Love the car (only got it recently), the exhaust sound at low speeds (in a tunnel :)) is great, but as a daily cruiser it is kind of useless due to the drone being too intrusive and tiresome.. VW dealer claims it is a normal noise (though admitting to it being pretty annoying during a test drive). Is there maybe an aftermarket "touring" exhaust or all I can do is sell the car? Sad, but seems like the only option.. Thx

It's got to be revs related, have you tried another gear to see? If you are in top gear, knock it down one. See if you still get it.

Did you buy the car from new? Have you driven another car with exactly the same specification, was it the same? If you did not buy the car new perhaps check if it’s had a resonator delete fitted.

Yip, got it from new. Even had a look underneath with the dealer. Nothing obvious wrong there.. It is revs and throttle position related for sure - anything more than 5% throttle/1500-4200revs causes the drone. I could be doing 80mph in 3rd gear I suppose, as with higher revs it goes away.. But thats kinda not the point, I guess.. Wish someone had a clue..

Is it the exhaust or the soundaktor? If you haven't already, put it in Individual, go to the settings and put the engine sound to Eco and see how you go. If that's not it, say where you are based and hopefully a helpful forum member with a similar car can take you out in theirs to rule out anything being wrong with yours.

nah.. even taken out the fuse out of the sound thingy (actually the dealer did.. :) ).. it makes no difference whatsoever, just like the "sound" settings does not... The car is DE spec (I am in Prague, so doubt, Ill manage to make it over tho the UK :D Barely any other owners here, though..). its the exhaust, 100%..

How many miles has your car done now? Mine had a bit of a drone, from new, which has since become almost nothing. It probably took about 2,000 miles to do that. I think VW spent the least money they could trying to “catch up” with the opposition as far as a “sporty” exhaust sound goes. My exhaust has a nice sound at tickover and is definitely louder, at all times, than my previous 2016 GTI. As I said, the drone has now gone, but I wouldn’t say the exhaust noise, overall, is worthy of the car.

I've not heard anyone talk about exhaust drone unless they have done a res delete (which is kinda obvious why it would drone after)

I've done about 18k miles now - hardly a matter of running it in now, Id say.. If no one else is experiencing this drone, I wonder how to convince VW that it is not OK - since according to them it is a normal "noise".. madness.. (yes - the car has NO mods whatsoever..)

If the dealer says its normal, then have a drive of another from his garage.... I suspect its either something wrong or you are just sensitive to the noise.

The stock exhaust is much louder than previously so perhaps this is what you are experiencing?
