Title: Windscreen scratch repair?
Post by: mcmaddy on 25 February 2020, 08:34
Anyone know if it's possible to have a scratch polished out on a windscreen? I must have had a tiny stone caught under my wiper blade yesterday and when I've put them on I've now got a scratch the full sweep of the blade on the screen.

You can... you can do it yourself if you have a DA.

Failing that there are a few companies that can do it- but looking at the prices I'd not consider it.

Autoglass say they don't recommend it and don't offer the service. They say it compromises the structural integrity.

You could always claim a new screen if your insurance has it. Obviously waiting until you have a large chip in your drivers arc... that could happen any time.

It's being traded in at the end of march and already has an unrepairable stone chip on the drivers side (too small to repair). Chip wasn't noticed by the sales guy when they gave me my trade in figure and if I mention that and the scratch he might back track. Wondering if it's better to just fess up as it's on my mot as an advisory too.

Ask your insurer whether the scratch falls under windscreen repair?

The cynical side of me would say Autoglass would rather you got a screen replacement as it’s more business for them .

As for polishing out a scratch - seem to remember reading on this forum some time ago that it was highlighted (I think by Booth11) that if removing glass scratches by machine polishing, if it’s not done correctly, it’s possible to create a hollow in the polished area, which if it’s in the line of sight can cause optical distortion.

Edit; just found the thread; reply #4 by Booth11.

However.........in the same discussion thread (reply #10), a company called Glasweld (https://www.glaswelduk.com/) do offer a scratch removal service, so worth considering if you wanted to avoid getting the screen replaced.

I've successfully polished out a scratch but it was very shallow, more like a scrape.
Can't remember what polish I used but a polishing pad on a drill, loads of water to keep the temperature down and patience abundle.

Chris:

Leave it, hand over the keys at trade in and say nowt. They'll almost certainly not notice it. They'll give it a cursory glance for dings and scrapes. They won't make an issue of a £75 excess fix when you might be facing a higher level of initial VED.

that's what I was thinking Matt. It's just the fact the chip which isn't even a chip is noted on the mot now. And now with the scrape or fine scratch they might say something.

Depending on how bad the scratch...Toothpaste and a good quality buffing cloth is brilliant on glass, and even used on spectacles without damage.
