hi there I'm on to my 5th set of discs and pads in a year there still keep warping I've tried brembo duratec and other just wondering if any of you guys have had the same problem .... wondering if it could be the abs pump I'm baffled
any ideas driving me crackers this man
car drives fine ie wheel balancing etc. help me lol
-
Still on the original discs at 81k and zero issues with them. Are you tracking the car?
-
no not at all bud steady away
-
Are you 100% sure the discs are warping ie have they been checked? Is it both sides or just one side? Have the brakes been checked for binding? Has the car been in for this to be investigated or just to replace the discs and pads each time?
-
they have been changed 5 times now my local mot place is stumped
-
"local MOT place" hmmm, sounds dodgy to me. Did they feel warped? Did they use VW approval parts for replacement, or non genuine? What was the mileage between warping, or was it conveniently when you had an MOT? Has the car been to VW main dealer recently?
I was in a Kwik Fit a few years ago and overheard an employee saying to a guy with a 2 year old Audi with 9000 miles miles on he needed ALL new round discs and pads. Total BS, the car was fine, just money making.
On my Mk5, I did 40,000 miles on original discs and pads, current Mk7 is at 32k on original discs and pads.
-
Ya there’s something not right here. I replaced rear discs and pads at 80,000miles. Pads were gone but changed the discs too due to excessive corrosion. bought front pads also but plenty of meat left so haven’t changed them yet. Used Brembo parts. I have also never aligned the car as she wears tyres very evenly. If it’s not broke don’t fix it ? As others have said above, get it to the stealers to at least diagnose your problem and go from there. Does sound like it could be binding though

Not sure if this will help you but I had a very similar experience with a Mk5 Golf GT TDI 170? It started off at 65k miles with the disc warp occurring over a 5K mile period then 4K miles and so on until it started at 1500 mile intervals. It turned out the issue was caused by slightly worn Lower Control Arm (wish bone) bushes. The wear on the bushes was not enough to flag up an Advisory at MOT time so it was not obvious that this was the cause initially. An utterly frustrating experience until the source of the problem was discovered.
-
hi there spoke to an independent German car specialist told him my problem he said he has had a few customers with the same problem and told me its the brake discs patent discs are no good , and said that changing them to vw original discs and pads will solve the problem defiantly ........ if it was the wishbone you would feel it whilst driving ,,,

The bush would have still been worn regardless of changing the discs at those intervals so I think some garage has been pulling your pisser

Hang on, you can't use patterned brake parts on a VW Golf?
I'd really suggest you find a garage with some reputation, that's two you've had now...
-
He said 5th set of discs!
Definitely go elsewhere!
-
The only way a car could need 5 sets of discs and pads in a year is if you were doing a track day every weekend!
-

I can't believe you've paid out for 5 sets without questioning the garages abilities to diagnose or at the very least the parts they are using!
Buy cheap, buy twice!!

Buy cheap, buy twice!!
Surely that's buy cheap, buy 5 times?
I wonder what brand of discs/pads were being fitted?

That was my thought, I'd have been asking questions after 1 set not 5.

I meant two garages have given him bum advice!

How long have Cadburys been doing brake (:embarrassed:) discs?!?!?
Out of curiosity have you been paying for all the replacements at full whack too?

For ages, but most people call them biscuits

Doh!! that's twice I've screwed up today! :undecided:
I really should concentrate more on my posts than my job, too many sharp folks on here!!

Ok so as others have stated you should be questioning it after the first set of discs.
But anyway, so either the discs the garages have ben supplying are seriously cheap nasty items or there could well be another issue that makes you think the discs are warped.
It has been mentioned, and I can speak from first hand experience on the E53 X5 that the lower bush in the control arm can cause judder under braking (it's a common issue on them), which can be mistaken for warping (so I wouldn't discount it).
But also have you had the hub checked for runout, because if the disc isn't spinning straight within the caliper again this can cause the same issue. If after fitting decent discs/pads you have the same issue then I'd get the bushes checked and maybe the discs skimmed on the hub to remove any potential run out.

The issue that was causing the discs to warp was the worn wishbone bushes. There were no warning signs to flag up the fact that the bushes were on their way out. No banging or clunking coming from the suspension or subframe and no vagueness or looseness in the steering of the car. That is what made it so hard to figure out that it was the actual bushes that was the root cause. I'd even had the wheel bearing/hub assemblies renewed after the second set of discs warped just in case. Run-out was tested/measured and all was good at each change of discs until the next round of warping. Only ever fitted Brembo or Pagid discs. Just hope the OP is able to find a cure.

A worn bush wouldn’t have caused the discs to warp  that’s the best one I’ve heard in nearly 30 year’s and any mechanic that cares to tell me different should give his tools to charity as he clearly shouldn’t be near anyone’s car

barrym381 - Would you be so kind as to explain to me why the disc warping issue that I experienced stopped immediately after replacing the LCA bushes (and installing another fresh set of identical Brembo discs and pads)? At no stage in this debacle were there any issues with brake calipers, slide pins, ABS unit, pipe work and brake hoses as all were in good working order. Like I said previously - the wheel bearing/hub assemblies were renewed. There was basically little else to investigate or try.

The idiots working on it had enough of your money would be my guess but there’s no way a rubber bush being worn will warp a brake disc regardless of how worn the bush is
The bush is rubber the disc is solid

Thank-you for replying.

sorry forgot to tell you the discs were replaced under warranty by 2 garages

Do both front wheels spin freely by hand if cars jacked up
-
both wheels rotate freely . once new discs are fitted there fine its only after about 1500 miles or so they end up with run out on them ie warping my local garage is stumped . surely this has to be patent discs as there fine once new
-
If the garage is replacing with cheap knock off stuff then maybe but they'd have to be really cheap and nasty. What brand of discs have they been using?
-
padgid brembo and dura tec mate

Pagid and Brembo aren't cheap parts so it does suggest as others have said that something else is wrong somewhere.

I recon that the caliper is dragging ...wrong grease on the slider pins ….I had that happen on my Mk7...to front & back...seemed ok for first 2,000miles, then they started to stick more...
-
hi just an update had the car in at swift motor sport Newcastle had the car fully checked nothing wrong with the car they said that the back of the pads and slider pins had copper grease on them which cause a problem with the abs unit ,,, renewed the discs and pads with genuine vw , and re greased the slider pins with lithium grease as vw recommends ...fingers crossed ,, waiting for refund from the previous garage
-
they said that the back of the pads and slider pins had copper grease on them which cause a problem with the abs unit ,,, renewed the discs and pads with genuine vw , and re greased the slider pins with lithium grease as vw recommends ...
Copper grease will NOT cause a problem with the ABS unless it gets onto the ABS reluctor ring itself....I have used it may times on VAG cars & never had any problems...
However I have had problems with copper grease going "hard" over time due to salt, heat etc...so I use special high temp grey lithium grease made by Loctite...similar to VW "hot bolt paste"...
The slider pins on the front VW calipers now have a plastic/or rubber bush on one pin..these will "absorb" grease & swell & stick the pin solid in the hole...Been there done that....you have to use the recommended TRW "PFG-110" grease...
Long gone are the days when you could just use copper grease on all the slider pins etc...
I did a post here on this problem:-
