Can I ask some advice please, my sons got his heart set on a gti performance, weve looked at one today which seems good, full dealer history etc and for sale through das welt auto. Is their warranty etc worth more than some of the extras like sat nav. I was expecting sat nav to be part of the spec but it seems not. The car has nothing apart from the performance pack. We are torn between getting one with loads of stuff like sunroof and toys or buying from das welt at a higher price but with all the security that offers. So wondering if things like sat nav could be added to it once we get it
Thanks to anyone with sage advice

You don't say how old the car is, so assume older than 3 years, and warranty offered with the car 1 or 2 years?
I'm sure there will be others out there with sunroof, which helps lighten up the cabin and DCC for a softer ride, if required.
Personally, I would go for a car with extras that you will find useful, and at some stage, will make it more saleable later on. I think sat nav is a given these days, but you may be able to retrofit a head unit. More knowledgeable people than I can advise.
Hope that helps.
-
You can retrofit OEM VW nav units, but they aren't cheap. In fact eye watering is nearer the mark.
There is/was an Alpine third party nav unit, VW dealers themselves even sold/fitted them but they aren't great - its very retro even compared to the VW one which is pretty retro I think anyway. The Alpine ones needed another additional antennae wire to pick up RDS traffic data that often seemingly didn't work.
Personally, if you are without a car mounted Nav unit, either buy a standalone satnav (Garmin, TomTom etc) or use your phone.
I'm assuming that a GTI-PP without Nav is quite an old one - from about 2016 they all came with basic nav AFAIK.
-
You can retro fit mib 2 units for about 1k. Try VW Retrofits on Facebook. He seems to be the goto guy.
-
Week 22 2015 (end of May) was the point nav became standard in the UK. It was also the point the MIB2 units were introduced, which had a bigger screen and better processor than the earlier MIB1 units.
As Fred says, retrofitting a genuine VW unit ain't cheap, as the extra cost would have stretched your budget and could have got you a better/newer car.
There's some info on das welt here;-
https://www.volkswagen.co.uk/used-cars/das-welt-auto-benefits
I've heard mixed reports about how good the warranty is, but at least any warranty is better than no warranty.
Oh, and avoid their finance. 10.9% APR is ridiculous.
-

As I said... eye watering just to get Nav!
And does that even give you the MFD integration?
-
Yes everything works correctly. To replace a nav unit from VW will cost upwards of 3 grand so retro fitting at 1 thousand is much cheaper. I agree it's expensive but if you want to do it it's possible.
-
Car is 2015, we looked at one with colour reversing camera, sat nav and dynaudio but it was in bad state both upholstery and engine so passed by. I knew the camera and audio were extras but presumed the nav was standard.
It's not viable to fit it at those sort of costs so will go without!
-
Personally speaking I went private and made sure I got one with all the options I wanted and more. It’s much easier to find a private car with all the options and haggle it down and then add the VW warranty afterwards.
If you can find one at the dealers with the options then even better.
As others have said a lot of things can be retrofitted but it’s all at cost so you have to weigh it up.
-

I agree the 10.9% APR is ridiculous but check if the offer is still on that I got buying a das welt!
Depending on your circumstances but I was a cash buyer and was persuaded to put the minimum (£1500) on VWFS and they then included 3 free services! I was told after 6 months I can pay off the finance and keep the services but even if you don't pay off you'll still be in front!! (FYI - just paid mine off!)

I don't have a VW Nav in my car and I just use Waze on my phone. It p1sses all over the VW sat nav, as it is crowd sourced information with up to the minute traffic info and importantly Police alerts, which has saved me many times, as it's free.

if you haven't VW nav how do you know if it's any good or not? You get traffic alerts on the factory nav if it's set up properly. Keep the maps up to date which are free and the integrated look is much better. I've never had any issues with any of my VW factory nav systems.
-
Because I tried in on another car before I bought this one.
Does the factory one have crowd sourced temporary speed cameras/police ahead information bang up to date? Don't think so!
-
It can have all the cameras on if you add them 👍.

I didnt think much ofthe warranty and it didnt cover door seals for example as I found out to my cost. Maybe worth looking into what it does cover and what is excluded compared to independent garages.
When I bought mine I plumped for the highest spec in my price range which meant a non PP car for me. I understand why a PP would be preferable and I drove both and I preferred the higher spec non PP but I drive like a grandad these days

Once the initial factory warranty has expired, any subsequent aftermarket warranty (VW’s own branded product or any other aftermarket car warranty product) that you buy, or is supplied with a used car will be an insurance based product covering electrical and mechanical components against sudden and unexpected breakdown or failure. There will also be the usual small print terms in these products, so always worth reading to see exactly what you’re covered for.
As a door seal is neither an electrical nor a mechanical component, then very few, if any aftermarket car warranties, would cover defective door seals.
-
Not temporary mobile ones, which is the ones that catch you out!
It can have all the cameras on if you add them 👍.

My Sat nav has been kept up to date but travelling from Newcastle to South Cumbria it wanted to take me the VERY scenic but extremely long way down through the Lakes on a summers day.
Explain that one if you can please.
Google maps through AA for me
-
As I have repeatedly said, I am someone who has to use nav in my Golf pretty much every day for work.
The VW system does not have a quality pathing algorithm. Sure it knows where things are and it will get you there eventually, but its not very smart.
Google maps is better.
Waze is MUCH better.
And thats before you start talking about map data accuracy, ease of updates, extra warnings about potholes, roadworks, accidents etc etc
If you just don't know where you are going, VW will get you there. If you want to get there in the quickest possible way, use Waze.
That's not just me, there are numerous tests out there that show you Waze is superior to anything else when it comes to the job of getting you there.
-
Agreed, I used to use the VW nav quite a bit. I found it gets confused easily and tries to send you in strange ways etc.
I leave maps on my AID as default but if I have to get somewhere, I plug into Apple Carplay and use Google maps.
-
I was in a similar position when I got my GTI.
I wanted PP but I also wanted as many extras / gadgets I could get as well. My key requirements where PP, heated seats, DCC, & good price (second hand).
In the end I found a Non PP at great price with all the other stuff and more but obviously without PP.
As mentinoed above the VW Nav in is waste of time. You’re better off with Waze / Google on your phone. Or better still apply carplay to allow you to project waze / google from your phone to the cars infotainment screen, but I presume you will need a fairly new model to have this feature and that will bring the price up?
For the price I paid I’m really pleased with my non PP GTI. I am always going think in the back of my mind how much better would PP have been, and will always have a curiosity to have this. That’s just the way I’m wired - always want more than I have. However in the real world my non PP GTI is perfectly fine and I will stick with it for many years, rather than un-necessarily pouring more cash into another car with PP.
So I guess in conclusion, you need to assess how much you’re willing to pay for PP, NAV etc. If you find something you think is a good compromise then go for it. So long as you’re 100% sure your curiosity to have those missing features don’t result in you regretting your choice after few months and you ending up spending loads more to buy another car.

TBH, maybe it's just me but I've never had a problem with the VW inbuilt Navigation. Over the weekend the wife and I took her Polo Blue GT (with inbuilt nav) down to South Wales to see our friends. Storm Denis was in full force and to be honest we nearly didn't go because of it.
In the end due to the possibility of having so many road closures, we decided to give Waze a try. 3 times it recalculated our route and asked us to turn off only for within seconds telling us there were road closures on this route and to turn around. The weird thing is that before it asked us to turn off, you could see the road closure signs for the road it wanted to take us on, on the map ? Why get us to take a route when the route is closed ?
In the end we revered back to the VW Nav using the live traffic data from a WLAN connection to VW's Car-Net, and that worked brilliantly - first time ?
As you can see from my options list below, I went a bit mad with mine, but part of me still wishes I'd have ticked that Performance Package box. The extra power.. - meh... mine is plenty quick enough and I doubt I'd be able to tell much difference in performance, but for the bigger brakes (which in my opinion finish off the car especially behind 19" alloys) and the trick diff in my opinion are well worth the asking price alone. In the grand scheme of things, unless a non PP and a PP car are both being driven balls out, I doubt there would be more than a fag paper between them across country, but in hindsight, I'd have still ticked that box.
-
I'm the same as you Andrew, never had an issue with any of the VW navigation units I've had. They are kept up to date which maybe others can't be bothered to do. Once it's set up correctly it works perfectly. Once speed cams are added etc it's even better. I found Waze to be complete tosh.
-
Another vote for the VW nav. Found it really good and no issues using it compared to other options like Waze, Google Maps, etc.
-
So what's the secret to using VW Satnav.
-Have it connected to WLAN all the time?
-Only ask for one option rather than 3?
-Anything else?
I really would like to use it more but I'm afraid to say I don't trust it anymore, yes, I know it's only an aid.

My car is a 7 (not 7.5) but with the larger screen and I get the 3 options each time I put a postcode in, but I always choose the middle one (which is the quickest route option). Then seems to work pretty well. As you say it is an aid and I have on occasion chosen a road when seeing it cuts across the route a little and the nav has happily re-routed.
-
If you want (proper) traffic and not just RDS garbage traffic, you need it connected to a wifi hotspot via your phone.
It won't help the pathing but might tell you about traffic and probably badly route you around it.
-
I could be wrong, but I'm sensing you don't like the standard Nav then Fred ;D ;D

Given that my Golf is a business tool, my arrival at the destination on time is critical to me.
If you are out for a Sunday drive or whatever, VW Nav will get you there (in the end).
BTW my Mk7 had NavPro and was a massive dissapointment vs the money I paid.... it didn't deliver what the VW literature promised. I have NavPro on my current Mk7.5 too - but it has live traffic data (finally) but as I suspected, half the problem was a rubbish pathing mechanism and that remains. Luckily I have a lovely big screen to use with AA and Waze now.... so it does kinda fix it but £1500 for a screen that isn't exactly an expensive component in 2017 is taking the mickey.

On public roads with sane drivers behind the wheel there wouldn’t be more than a fag paper between them.
Back in 2014 when I had my GTI PP I was fortunate enough to be able to test the two specs back to back owing to the fact I was given a hired 220PS to play with one springtime Sunday.
(https://i.postimg.cc/prGbXgKf/C2-D5-F1-C9-EE97-41-F7-B334-9-C235-E2-EF243.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/RJHbgpsh)
Obviously the 10PS difference was unnoticeable but the bigger brakes certainly were even in fairly standard braking from motorway speeds.
The VAQ diff was the main reason I ticked the box and the one thing that impressed me most.
I suppose that in the main those that ticked luxury options instead of the PP box probably are less interested in actual driving dynamics because Golf GTI’s appeal to such a massive spectrum of buyers and many of them are far from boy/girl racer types.
I came from a very long succession of modified cars (mostly GTIs) so the PP was a no brainer for me and I considered most of the rest of the options list mere fripperies. I did spec Nav on mine (MIB I) but wasn’t impressed by it.
Park assist was good fun but only ever used a few times.
The 220PS GTI I drove back to back was devoid of options and I enjoyed driving it just as much. It lacked the finesse of the diff and the security of the 340mm brakes but still had the excellent MQB handling and GTI DNA.

How do you add speed camera info? I have updated maps recently - 2016 PP with Standard Nav unit and Dynaudio.
Is there a thread somewhere, did a quick search for 'speed cam', but only this thread came up.
Thanks

I am also interested in this but seem to recall that it requires a subscription to gpsworld or similar to get the update file?

It only works on newer MIB2 units, can't remember when those came in - maybe late 2015?
Yes you obviously need a data source for your camera locations.
You also need to update them regularly...by hand.
And finally the "warning" you get is a subtle VW bong noise and its trigger about 100m from the camera, which at "making progress" speeds could well be too late, especially if its a forward facing camera.
Its pretty poor overall - not what you imagine you are getting!
-
Wrong Fred, I've had speed cams on every VW sat nav from rns510 to mib1 nav pro and now on mib2 nav pro. A friend of mine also has them on his discover nav. By manual if you mean pop an SD card in and update then it's hardly a hardship! I get two updates a year because speed cams rarely change. I've got the bong turned off because the cam shows on the screen and it's far from poor really Fred. Simple 5 minutes is all it takes 👍

you can sometimes get files from eBay.

Its the 21st century!
We shouldn't be updating maps and POI locations by hand - that's what computers and the internet are for...
I want to be able to seamlessly drive my car, not fanny around with remembering to fetch an SD card and copy files onto it.
I also don't want to be staring at a map to spot cameras - I have a big widescreen display I can look for them on - its called the windscreen. It only has value if it can tell me about them through audio, better still, only tell me about them if I am going (ahem) 1 or 2 mph faster than the speed limit.
Its not even as though I am talking about some strange new 5G feature that will appear on Tomorrow's World, its here now.
I believe the Mk8, like the new BMW's will receive map updates over the air rather than the cranky rubbish we have now which is only half a step beyond having to stick a new DVD into the nav unit.
Car makers are massively behind the technology curve - always have been because they work on 5 year life cycles for everything. Whereas computer technology moves much faster.
I might be old, but I understand this much!
-
Car makers being behind is very true Fred but I like the fact I update my own maps and put my own speed cams on 🤷♂️

Thanks - any particular ones you would recommend on ebay? As an alternative, do you mind me asking which ones you buy/subscribe to?
