Title: Pedal Box Poll
Post by: fredgroves on 01 February 2020, 11:11
In (yet) another thread someone asked about doing a pedal box survey, so here you go.

Don't comment unless you have voted

Really? I have absolutely no issue at all... If anything you need careful throttle application to avoid tramping..

As far as I’m concerned then yes.
All models seem to share the same actual accelerator pedal part so therefore it figures the little PCB in the top of the pedal is programmed the same.
My manual GTD even when briefly fitted with a DTUK tuning box didn’t suffer excessive tramping on Bridgestone tyres. Sensible modulation of the throttle (always thought the first couple gears were too low just like in the R) saw no traction issues.
A light press of the pedal with the PB fitted saw the car surge forward in any gear when cruising or needing a quick rapid manoeuvre.

My DSG TCR does suffer occasional tramping in the wet though. Adds to the occasion!

I'm firmly in the camp of not needing one and them being a waste of money. Don't have any dead pedal and haven't on either my gtd or on the GTi PP I have now. If others feel the need to have one though then that's up to them ETTO.

I had 1 fitted to my mk7 manual GTI and I felt it really needed it but I got a new 7.5 PP DSG in September and I have not even tried it on it yet. It feels so much more responsive.

That's interesting. Were there changes made to the throttle mapping from 7 to 7.5? Is it the extra power or the DSG box that you feel made it unnecessary on the 7.5?

Seconded. GTD feels 'night and day" different with Pedal Box fitted especially the DSG variant. That first third or so of accelerator pedal travel just feels unresponsive without it. It feels like turbocharger lag.  Personal opinion of course. Different strokes for different folks...

Or different Volks for different folks as the ad said. I’m not old enough to remember.

I went from a 2016 GTI DSG to a 2018 GTI Performance DSG and the throttle response is markedly better, with the dead part much reduced. I considered a pedal box all through my ownership of the first car, but definitely don’t feel the need for this one.

Agree with all the comments in the other discussion about modes, though. I only use sport mode, now that the Soundaktor has been set to 0% by Carista, and stil get nearly 36mpg overall in very mixed driving, mostly rural.

Jumping straight out of a Mk7 GTD manual into a Mk7.5 GTD manual... can't say I noticed any difference in throttle pedal response.

In fact, the whole car felt pretty much the same other than the AID, the new NavPro staring me in the face and the new LED headlights being an improvement over the already very good Xenons.

I still say the "problem" people talk about is DSG related, because its doing loads of things which are invisible to the operator and has all sorts of automated behaviours you initially don't understand.

Well deffo mine was much improved. It was one thing I specifically thought about and remarked on in my pick up post on here.

I too get that impression. in my (on this issue) humble opinion, the manual gives you more flexibility to have the pedal and engine speed exactly where you want for any situation.
I've seen revo promote a linear throttle map for " track or spirited driving" because standard throttle mapping can be oversensitive and gives less control. I just wonder whether adding a pedal box may cause that problem.

I don’t know about any changes to the throttle mapping but that may be the reason but i am sure that having the extra power and the DSG box will of contributed to it as well but there is definitely a lot less lag when i press the throttle now.
It’s not just me who noticed it, the Mrs & brother in law both agreed that it wasn’t needed in my new 1.

Interesting the lack of R owner comments... I guess this is a GTI forum
