Hey All
Has anyone experienced an issue with the fuel filler door on their MKVII?
The panel gap around the door on my CSS looks like it is out of alignment and it's catching on the bottom right corner. I have to lift it up to ensure it doesn't catch the bodywork when closing.
Apologies for the terrible picture, I filled up on the way home and grabbed a snap as I was coming inside. Compared to the TCR which I would expect to have the same body shell, that's perfectly even around the cap door. It's never been caught, left open nor has the car ever been in an accident to have caused the damage. I also close it gently and don't concentrate pressure on a point to close it.
I recall there being some sort of issue but have searched and can't find the terms or posts.
Any help or thoughts much appreciated.

There is a known issue with the flap sticking shut and an official fix for this from the dealer but I don't recall that being related to alignment or fit of the flap and think that it involved shaving off a few mm of plastic to correct the fit of the latching mechanism. http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=279731.0 page 2 has some info.

Thanks Philip, that's the issue I'd recalled deep in my subconscious. A superficial look at it last night in less than ideal light suggests the seat of the hinge has moved to cause this. I've emailed my dealer and the service manager should come back to me.

Mines not catching but certainly looks like yours does and not properly aligned. I’ve been meaning to take a look but it does open/close ok at the mo so haven’t rushed to do anything about it. Probably should tbh before it gets stuck or something. Will be interested in the resolution for this.

Will post resolution and some better photographs. I don't want to start shaving the hinge otherwise the dealer will turn round and say I fiddled so I'll let them diagnose and document first.

Very true. Doesn't take much for the dealers to try and squirm out of doing anything.

Resolution is to replace the internal assembly. The hinge mechanism appears to have given up and there are no visible signs of stress to have caused a failure. It's a fairly flimsy cover as you can see from the video but a 10-15 min job to do.
VW tech suggested it could be tweaked but recommended putting a warranty claim in and getting a brand new part. I agree.

The fuel filler door on both my gti pp and golf has appeared to be visually misaligned slightly and both have also ceased shut on occasions. The solution to make fuel filler door open again was to thoroughly clean the hinge and catch then apply Lubricant or wd40 to both the cath and hinge

I added lubricant as the hinge was completely clean, improved opening noise (there was a slight creak) but not alignment.

Cool on the update. Guess if you have warranty then definitely worth just getting them to do it. Cheers for the link too as that quite useful.

The assembly is £72 and they waived labour as it's not a difficult switch as you can see from the video. I pointed out that based on mileage and assuming a tank fill up every 250 miles, the part had not even survived 40 uses which as durability goes, is not fit for purpose. When you get a new VW part, there is a 2 year warranty so if the same happens on the replacement...

Mine has been into VW twice with this very issue. Unfortunately I don’t know what they actually did to ‘rectify’ the fault but around a year or so after the first visit it dropped down again. I expect that it will drop down again eventually after the second time but so far so good.
-
It may not always involve a new part! There is still use of brute force, hopefully with good judgement, not ignorance, with problems of this kind.

The guy who looked at my car suggested an 'experience led approach' would be cheaper but I said I wanted the problem fixed properly, not hacked. I also asked for confirmation that a fix (replacing the assembly) would guarantee it wouldn't happen again. Hence knowing about the 2 year warranty. I'm not quite sure what has caused the issue because from a durability perspective, I'd have thought they would be designed to last considerably longer.

@AGB; How old is your car? The reason for asking is that if it’s still covered by the original three year factory warranty, depending on its age, you may not get a two year warranty on new parts fitted during the warranty period. Copy of the relevant section of the new car factory warranty terms and conditions;
Replacement parts warranty
All Volkswagen Original replacement parts carry a parts warranty for a period of 2 years/unlimited mileage, from the date of purchase. Items with warranties in excess of 2 years will be advised to you at the time of purchase. The 2 year parts warranty does not apply to parts fitted under the terms of the vehicle warranty, which are warranted for the remaining period of the vehicle warranty.
So if you’ve only six months of the new car factory warranty remaining, any new parts fitted would only be warranted for six months.

The fuel cap on my last car (built December 2017) fell off the first time I filled up

MMMMM!!!!!!
That's interesting reading since I've just had my Infortainment screen replaced due to bad pixels.
I've got 6 months warranty left, God help VW if the screen goes again.
Anyway, my filler flap sticks occasionally. Bit of a tap & it releases itself.
I've looked for a photo of where it's needs trimming but it appears to have been removed. Anyone got a clear photo or explaination.

BMW are the same, so the item is only covered by the warranty that runs on the car and doesn't come with it's own fixed term as when buying over the counter.

My car is December 2016 and has only recently expired. The part (and labour) have been replaced FOC as a goodwill gesture and they confirmed that the part is warrantied for 2 years.
I can see why they'd warrant for the balance of the warranty period though.

So much for PDI! It's an easy fix but having investigated the whole assembly, I'm struck by how flimsy the whole thing is.

If it sticks occasionally, try WD40 in the mechanism in the first instance before you undertake anything you can't reverse. If you shine a torch on the hinge and close it 3/4 of the way with your left eye against the bodywork, you'll see where it catches and it should be easy to see where it needs a trim.
-
My flap has started sticking....
Might have to try the WD40 first. It's just not popping out. Can't face another dealer trip so soon!
-
Wd40 isn't any good, you need something like lithium grease on the pop out bit.

WD-40 make a lithium grease too. Just to make it more confusing. I'd start with standard WD-40 lubricant as it's not as viscous but if I recall, with the cap closed, it's going to be a pig to get any lubricant to reach the parts you need it to get to.

Mine failed last week, couldn’t open it. Fortunately as booked in to vw where it’s been for the last 7 days.
Not ideal for a 6 month old car..
What a pain. What are they doing with it that they've had it for so long?
Someone asked about images to shave the hinge - found some decent ones here: https://www.stuartdalby.co.uk/vwgolfmk7/sticking-fuel-filler-cover/index.php
