Now we have reached the end of the Mk7, just wondered how old your cars are?
This forum by and large used to be mainly new car owners and people considering ordering, just wondering how that's changed now.
-
Technically I can't answer your poll. Mine is around 18+ months old so not 0-1 years and not 2 years old yet...

Just because its you sweetcheeks, I have edited the poll

 I was thinking the same as mine is fast approaching 13 months old..... common sense prevailed, I went for the newest!

Ah thanks Fred, that's better!

bugger..... I need to change my vote now?!?!? :undecided:
-
Can I say -2 days, Collect mine brand new on Saturday, I'm late to the Mk7 party
-
I have owned mine since new in 2013.
I can remember the excitement around tracking the build and shipping, and then seeing my car a couple of hours after it was delivered to my dealership.
I don't think I would get much more out of a newer Golf, or indeed any other hot hatch from a rival manufacturer.
It is unlikely I shall ever buy another ICE car again; this car now lives in my garage and does longer trips or just fun journeys, whilst a Nissan LEAF 40  is my daily driver.
I am a pre-booker for a VW ID.3 1st and if I get this (or when I get something else electric) only then will I be selling this car.
-

That's interesting.
We definitely are getting into that time now.
I'm getting one last ICE car this year, then I anticipate thats the end of it.
The Mk8 Golf afaik is the last Golf VW will make...
The end is drawing near.

That is interesting.... and slightly sad, end of an era and all that!
My issue with electric is the range and infrastructure for charging! I appreciate things will start to move fast now but I'm still thinking in a few years when I'm ready for a change I'll be going hybrid as we like our holidays down south and don't want to sit at the services half way for 4-5hrs.... really hoping that mk8 GTE looks good in the flesh!!

As the first to post my vote this morning, I am moved to comment now. Interesting results already and I’m prepared to bet most owners in the new or nearly new category are repeat customers, some indeed serial repeaters. I worked my way up to new via a few used models ( this is my second new GTI, I got one of the last Mk7s).
I assumed my March 19 car would be one of the last built! It’s an extraordinary testament to the 7/7.5 that sales have remained strong to the end and buyers have shown enough faith to still be spending a lot of dosh on a new performance Golf given the impending change (or maybe because of the impending change!).
I will watch progress of the poll with interest.

Indeed a repeat customer for me..... well an R and then GTI but in 25 years of driving I've always had to put running costs to the top of the list until a few years ago and now a nice short commute and the one car I never owned was a fast Golf, that itch had to be scratched and I honestly wish i'd done it sooner!! I know they are an expensive car but you get what you pay for and I love them!!!

There's been a huge amount of chatter recently at work due to the changes to the P11D from the new tax year for 100% pure electric vehicles essentially being a tax free benefit.
As such there's been a large increase at our company in hybrids and especially the pure electric (we have a Jag I-Pace, several E-Golf's, and a couple of Audi E-Tron's on order).
Whilst I think it's clear that the grim reaper is now circling ICE cars, my question (which no one so far has been able to answer) is where does the "spare" electricity in the national grid come from for charging all these new electric or hybrid vehicles. I remember reading a couple of years ago that the UK was up to about 98% capacity at peak times for electrical demand (and that's before even hybrids really took off). AFAIK, there's no plans in the UK to build any new power stations, at least in the short term (in fact the one near me which is coal fired is actually being decommissioned later this year.
What happens when we all want to charge our cars and demand outstrips supply ?

That's when the government steps in again and finds a way to force us back in to diesels..... the circle of life!!! well the tax circle of life!!
joking apart it is a very good point..... maybe they'll ban kettles in the home to counteract the increase in demand for electric cars?!?!

At what cost on top of an already expensive car?!?!

My GTI was only bought in summer last year and was bought for daily duties. It's nearly 6 years old now and won't be going anywhere till it falls apart. I'm a diehard ICE fan and still can't bring myself to the EV fold. After owning an E60 M5 with that lovely V10 engine and I still have a 4.8is X5 I'm not too worried about fuel costs .
But even once the GTI has to be replaced I'd still have to consider a used petrol of some sort but who knows what that will be or that's on offer.
As has been mentioned the biggest issue for me with EV is the charging times and range.
-
Just 3 months with present but this my 7th year with the MK7/7.5 (GTD/R/TCR)

Like everything it will have distinct phases:
1) Government subsidies to kickstart take-up
2) Removal of government subsidies just as the industry staggers to its feet
3) Taxation of whatever it is - reverse subsidy.
As I've said on here over the years, its only a matter of time before domestic electricity for charging vehicles attracts some sort of fuel duty somehow.
They'll probably tell you its to pay for more powerstations, because everyone is causing a brownout.

This is almost certainly true amongst the regulars on here.
Thing is, for the 7 years of its production, the Mk7 was really the class leader. It was had to find a better car in its size and one which had such low depreciation. VW utterly smashed it, I'd go as far as to say it had the same impact as the Mk1 did when it launched.
I ordered my second Mk7 GTD virtually the same as my first. Ok, it was a Mk7.5 vs a Mk7 but that didn't actually matter to me much - if the timing had been different, I'd have been happy with another Mk7. As it turned out, the 7.5 was better, but I'd not have noticed without having one.
Anyway, the poll was really more to see what the audience was here now rather than anything else but the discussion has already become interesting in ways I never anticipated when I started this thread.
I do really enjoy this forum!

Time to buy that stupid V8 we'd all secretly love to run for a short time whilst we still can. To hell with the expense.

Almost but not quite for me... a rather more modest 300bhp 4wd hot hatch.... but still i am of the mind that its last gasp.
-
I'm just coming out of that stupid V8, A C63 the proper 6.2 one without the turbos.
Had it since last June and already had enough, makes a lovely noise and stupidly fast but that novelty soon wears off and tip toeing on the accelerator so you dont spin the wheels is a pain. And filling with fuel then within 160 miles the light comes on to prompt to fill it up again you end up subconsciously checking the gauge all the time...Just feels abit of a one trick pony but glad I've experienced it before they are gone forever.
My last Golf experience was a Mk6 GTD back in 2016, absolutely loved it but a change in job at the time meant it had to go for a company car. Been looking at Golfs for a while and the Mk8 isn't doing anything for me inside and out so decided on a TCR, the deals on a new one made it a no brainer compared to an ex demo.
I've told my mate that if I change it within 3 years to shoot me....Its an ex stock with the side graphics, I wonder how long they will last.

My X5 is a V8 with a custom exhaust and it’s definitely something every petrol head needs to own at some point throughout their life.
Life’s too short. Go for it I say

Most people are too worried about the running costs (me included!)
But thinking about a few of the cars that people I know drive - V8 M3 (used as a daily), new M4 Comp (daily), F-Type SVR (occasional weekdays), new RR Autobiography 5.0 V8 (daily), 600LT (weekends), 991.2 GTS (daily), V10 R8 manual (weekends).
Makes me think the Golf's replacement needs a touch more power!
-
All this talk of EV and the potential costs and range issues has made me think.....
how many mk1 and mk2's are still running? all I need to do is really look after my 1 year old GTI for 30 odd years and that'll see my driving days out and by then it'll probably be an appreciating asset!!! win win!

The C63 is one car I've always ached for.... for no other reason than that fabulous noise but 160 miles between petrol stops!!! I don't think I could live with that!!

Its normally £75 to fill up and the range is around 230 miles, its normally around 50 miles left on the range when the dreaded amber light comes on. It averages around 20mpg

20mpg isn't too bad..... IF you can get that average!
My average during the week in the GTI because of a short, busy commute.... around 14-15mpg!! What would that equate to in a C63?
Sorry but the golf is here to stay even if it doesn't sound quite as good as a V8!

Move up to the R and only go out on damp/wet weekends and tell me one car on that list that would keep up?!?!?

Ha the original R8 is very twitchy... But most of the others wouldn't keep up with my GTI on a dry day but then I do like to drive. And that's the beauty of the Golf, real world you can wring its the neck and not be doing completely stupid speeds.
One I missed off is a friend who daily's a new M5 Comp - there are no roads around us where you can use the accelerator flat down for more than about 4 seconds at a time.

Do it now! In 2004 I bought an Audi S4 Avant, which I still think is my favourite car ever. The sound of that V8 was awesome!
-
Interesting.... its almost 50% of folks saying they are over the 3 year mark so far.
As someone looking to buy another car this year and its not going to be a Mk8 simply because it doesn't fit with my timings, I wonder if everyone else looks at the market segment and just thinks "there really isn't a true Golf GTI alternative" - well not without either compromise or more money to spend.
Again, it speaks volumes to just how well VW nailed this.

My GTi was one of the first deliveries in Ireland in August 2013 and I’ve loved every minute with the car ! Must admit I have been tempted with an R and would love an R32 in the garage for the summer but I can’t fault the car. Here’s looking forward to the next 7. I will be dragged kicking and screaming into an electric car. I have a long daily commute 100km each way and if you think the UK charging network is bad you should see what’s it’s like here in Ireland. A large town around here might have one charge station with 2 plugs if you are lucky. It’s light years off been a reality here I’m happy to report !!!
-
With talk about the impending EV era, I note that the Pear Tree Park and Ride car park in Oxford has 1035 parking spaces and 1 electric charging point!
I think there is a way to go yet with the ICE.
-
Great thread. Some interesting comments!
My 7.5 is my first VW and the first new car I've ever bought. I'm keeping it because it's brilliant.
I've also bought a 31 year old 205 GTI in the last few months. I'm keeping that too because it's brilliant.
And I can't understand why anyone would want more power. The more power, the more frustration at not being able to use it!
The golf is great fun on the right road. The 205 is great fun on any road.
As for EV- yeah I'll buy one when the time comes. I'll wait for some clever engineer to come up with a solution to the range issue.
-
On my 5th mk7 and a serial Golf buyer.
The kit thrown in on the last of the 7’s make it a compelling purchase still versus much newer opposition despite the list price becoming very high.
The future? Who knows. Right now I’d be quite happy if my current GTI TCR is my last Golf before moving on to something totally different in years to come. It’s one hell of an encore as boring five door family hatches go.

My average during the week in the GTI because of a short, busy commute.... around 14-15mpg!! What would that equate to in a C63?
I came out of a W204 C63 coupe in to my first Mk7 GTI and on what sounds like a similar commute to yours (1.5 miles and anything up to an hour) my current TCR manages 13-15 mpg. The C63 was 6-7mpg...
-
My car is around 7 years old still running fine! only problem I have had new water pump car was bought secondhand when it was 2 year old mileage is 54000 in carbon gray metallic with the performance pack? will keep the car as I think this will be a classic in the future?

An hour to do 1.5 miles, half walking speed? I'd rather walk or bike it, unless it was lashing it down. Central London?

I don't know how I always end up defending my choice to drive when yes walking or cycling would probably be quicker (1 mile and as an average takes me 25-30 minutes at best!) but I'm a car guy and I work hard for what I have so I am going to use it, even if I agree it makes no sense in the real world!
….and yes the economy isn't great during the week but I've seen upper 40's on a run at the weekend with the missus and nipper on board..... back down to 15mpg if I'm on my own!! But doesn't that sum up performance golfs perfectly, everything to everyone.... the absolute allrounder!!
btw... really good OP!!

It would frustrate the hell out me to be going that slow and be overtaken by a pedestrian doing double my speed!
It takes 15 mins to do the middle 2 miles of my 13 mile commute due to a bottleneck and that boils my piss. I don't think I could drive your commute and not be pissed off when I arrive at work.

the stupid part is the rest of the commute (well 0.8 miles!) is fine it's just our industrial estate sites some 100-150 businesses and 1 way in 1 way out.... you can imagine what 5pm is like!!! :undecided:

Looked over the fence seriously at the new competition at each changeover but in the end, the competition, though improved could not beat out the whole package the MK 7 of the time -

Agree 100% Fred - there isn't anything out there that hits the mark. My problem is the exhaust on the Performance is just too noisy for me, hence haven't pulled the trigger (I know very few of you will agree with that, but that's just me and it's my cash ). Have been looking to buy new but am now seeing if I can pick up a late 230hp.
I've looked at pretty much every alternative - A Class, 1 Series, A3, V40, Leon ST, Focus and (perish the thought) even small SUVs like XC40, Q2, T-Roc, Evoque. Keep coming back to the Golf.....

If I didn't need to use the car during the day then I would walk / cycle / public transport but unfortunately it's not practical to do so. Besides, the cars a nice place to be, comfy seats, good music, just stick on the ACC and let it get on with it

Have you thought about changing your hours? Go in earlier, leave later in the evening or the same but rerversed?
In most cases that fixes that stupidity.
-
GTI is now 13 months old and covered about 5.5k. Work from home so my commute is about 45 seconds.
It’s a fantastic car, driven mostly for pleasure so I guess I’m lucky.
Nothing else really interests me and as I’ve always bought from new and kept a long time (last car, Discovery 4 was nearly 9 years old when we parted company) plan is to keep the GTI for a long time. Hybrids and anything without an internal combustion engine do nothing for me, soulless, about as interesting as buying a washing machine (but then again, I’m not in my first flush of youth)

Unfortunately some of us live in the real world where your employer sets your hours...… plus in my case I have to be there during the hours that our production team work because they can't tie there own shoelaces most of the time! :smug:
Plus as Philip said, it's not like it's an unpleasant place to sit!

I'd have thought that as someone driving a C63 you would be fairly high up the food chain and able to make decisions.
Either that or you live a cardboard box under a railway arch just to own a C63 ;-)
Have you thought about walking/cycling to work and when you need to go out for work, walking/cycling back to your car (aka "home") and driving from there?

Unfortunately some of us live in the real world where your employer sets your hours...… plus in my case I have to be there during the hours that our production team work because they can't tie there own shoelaces most of the time! :smug:

Oops..... it isn't me that owns a C63, I said I always wanted to but couldn't live with the fuel consumption just for the lovely noise!
…. and as for height up the food chain, I do ok thank you and live in a nice 4 bed semi. But as I'm the Cad/Cam manager I have to be here during working hours and get no pay for any extra.... although maybe I should to make up for all the time I spend on here!!
