Title: T&C for Extended Warranty purchased with new car
Post by: Paul70 on 09 January 2020, 11:04
I purchased a 4 year warranty when buying my new GTI back in 2016 and the third year has just elapsed. My car has gone in for diagnostic work and the dealer is stating after the 3 years the T&Cs change and I have to pay for diagnostic work. I knew an extended warranty purchased close to the end of the standard 3 year warranty was not as comprehensive, however, I thought an extended warranty purchased with a new car sale was a simple extension to the manufacturer’s warranty.

Any guidance and advice would be much appreciated.

Correct. I have 5 year warranty from new and it's been exactly the same as the 3 year. Not had to pay for anything.

Thanks very much for the quick response Ryan. I thought so too, I would not have purchased when buying the car if the warranty T&Cs were different

Just for my curiosity if anyone knows, what sort of costs are involved with extended warranty when brought from new and extending towards the end of the 3 years?

I know I'm only just passing the 1st year with mine but to be honest so far I think I might be keeping this on past the 3 years, mainly because its an amazing car and also where do you go after it.... mk8?

Your order confirmation form will show under options EA9 5yrs 90k extended warranty. Think the cost was about £490. Last time i checked VW & Seat are the only ones in the VAG group that no longer offer extened factory warranty.

I paid £250 to extend to 4 years but that was back in 2016.

The option to extend new car factory warranty by either one or two extra years that you could only buy when ordering the car new is no longer available.

VW offer an extended warranty that you can purchase when the three year factory warranty is about to expire. This is a ‘normal’ mechanical and electrical component failure / breakdown insurance product with the usual exclusions that are common to an aftermarket car warranty product. - the cost will depend on the level of cover (All Component or Named Component cover) and excess you choose, so the cost may be quite different to the cost of the now obsolete extended factory warranty.

SRGTD - do you know when the factory warranty extension option was removed?

I think that like all warranty work there is a 60 quid diagnostic charge which you only have to pay if the fault is not found. If the fault is found, VW pay the diagnostic charge.

That seems fairly normal.

It was removed mid-2018.

Thanks, agree that seems fair if no fault is found.

If you check Skoda and Audi configurator the Factory extended warranty is still avaible. The question is why has VW and Seat removed it.

If you check Skoda and Audi configurator the Factory extended warranty is still avaible. The question is why has VW and Seat removed it.

Maybe a) the cost of warranty claims in years 4 and 5 exceeded the revenue received by VW from the sale of this option or b) VW sold very few of the extended factory warranty option, so perhaps they concluded there wasn’t the demand for it or c) if most people lease or PCP, they won’t keep their cars long enough to benefit from a factory warranty in years 4 and 5.

Could be any (or none) of the above. Maybe Skoda and Audi customer demographic is different to VW, which could be the reason for it still being available to those brands.

Anyone’s guess.
