I’ve done it with obdeleven but I think I long coded it - it wasn’t an app at the time and not sure if it is now.

Not sure about Carista...

Yep, I have done the 5 brake light Mod with OBDEleven with adaptations. The App is only for non LED tail lights. My friend had Carista and dumped it as he said it was too limited ans any things we wanted to do needed additional payments.

Full Rear Brake Lights (x5 Lights)
Enables your boot lights to also act as brake lights.

Module 09 (Central Electrics)
Security Access Code = 31347
Adaptation
Search for and select: Leuchte27 NSL RC6
Select: Lichtfunktion C27
Set to brake light = Bremslicht (default is not active)
Go back and search for and select: Leuchte27 NSL RC6
Go to: Dimming CD27
Set to 100 (default is 0)

That’s only for one side though isn’t it

Nope, the inner lights do not have separate left right channels for the brake lights.

Pretty sure that's the one I used and mine works fine.

That looks so much better. I need to upgrade to the OBDeleven Pro version as soon as the standard one lands with me as do like that a lot.

Every time I'm behind a MK7  and the inners don't light up it makes me question why it left the factory like that. It's just odd

Tbf I never really thought anything of it until I just saw your video. I guess as the majority don't do it, it doesn't look out of place.

Don't ask me what, but I am fairly sure there is a UK regulations reason why its not like that.

Yes, under the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989, there must be a minimum distance of 100mm between the rear fog lamp and stop lamp where they share a common lamp body.

Presumably on the mk7 / mk7.5 Golf there’s less than 100mm distance between brake light and fog light on the inner (tailgate mounted) part of the light cluster, so to comply with the Regulations in the UK, VW don’t code the inner part of the brake light to illuminate.

Ahhh yes, I thought it might have been something like that.

As such, potential for a MOT fail I'd guess.

And presumably a ‘friendly’ warning or potentially a prosecution if stopped by the boys in blue.

Now that's very interesting indeed. Never really thought about that. Still looks so much better though

Until someone doesn't spot your brake lights (the reason why the law insists on the separation) and runs up your ar$e.

Then the back of your car doesn't look better.

I be amazed if any MoT test station would notice let alone know the ruling on the minimum distances involved, it would just look stock to Joe Bloggs!! nice subtle mod though!

It's passed an MOT like that so I wouldn't let it put you off doing the mod.

Never had issues with the MOT. Bigger issue is the "brigade" that brake before indicating as the brake lights will mask out the indicators for a split second.

It's not so much masking the indicators, it's more to do with knowing why they are braking in the first place.

Why has this bloke in front slowed to a virtual stop? Ahh, I see, he's just put his indicator on, so must be turning. Pity he couldn't have let me know sooner. Still, at least his Nissan Juke looks cool with its front fog lights on.
