Morning all.
Planning for next Saturday for Stage 1 with the Midland VW boys. I rang my insurer yesterday,Chris Knott, to signal my intention.
The chat was going well until she asked what increase in BHP does this achieve. I told her approx 100, there was an audible gasp, a hesitation and a stammered response to hold while she refers me. 5 mins later she's back with a statement that,(1).. That is not normal for an ECU remap, (2).. 30 BHP is NORMAL for an ECU remap and (3) we only insure upto 70 BHP increase anyway!!.
I informed her she was talking rubbish, Chris Knott is a modified car insurer and can I speak to someone else but that did'nt go to well. The woman then said she was going to get in touch with the underwriters Highway to confirm and I rudely jumped that my Edition 30 was Stage 2 with Highway with no issues. I told her I left Adrian Flux to join Knotts with an intention before the end of the year to go stage 1 and the guy I spoke to said no problem we can sort that.
Anyway she's going to ring back today but I need to ask the forum is anybody insured with Chris Knott that has modified their vehicle. I'm a bit worried this is going to be refused or worse a massive hike in policy fees which will mean me going back to Flux cap in hand. I left because they wanted to charge me an admin fee for renewel after 2 years with them. I should have paid it.
Anyway, sorry for the essay.

So a stage 1 takes you from what on a PP? 245bhp to 345? Really?
I'm no expert, but I would have thought a stage 1 remap or box would take you to about 300 tops?

Hi Gulf,
I'm REVO stage 1 and insured with LV. When I did my quote on their website it was just a tick in a box under modifications to say ECU modified. You might want to do an online quote to see what you get from them.

You can see his car is a Mk7 PP in the picture so it will be 227bhp? But another 100bhp sounds a lot.
For info, Revo state on their website 295-317ps for a for Mk7.5 245 P depending on various factors.

Thanks everyone. Yes 100bhp increase was the figure I stated to the insurer covering my ass. Revo states 313ps to 333ps ( I know it does'nt mean bhp) https://www.onlyrevo.com/product-details/software/volkswagen/golf-vii/258/stage-1 I don't know the exact without rolling road after the remap.
Anyway.. Just came off the phone. Chris Knott modified car insurer is adamant that 30bhp after a ECU remap is the maximum they will take. Highway, who insured me for stage 2 on my Eddy agree with them. Pretty fed up it was an early xmas pressie for me.
Thank you for your comments

Thats ok then surely - I would doubt given the OEM engine power you have currently and the remap that you will exceed 70bhp increase.
I'd doubt you have 227bhp now and won't exceed 300 at the end. 70 bhp gain sounds distinctly likely.
If its a proper tune they can always make sure you stay under anyway.

I hear you fred but todays call went back on that and 30bhp is their standard. I'm going to start ringing around, not sure if I can claim back the 4 months remaining on my policy and start a new one this weekend yet but seriously did not see this coming.
Thanks

That's impressive gains, be interested to hear your thoughts and see the dyno results. Guess that's what you pay for with the big boys like Revo and APR.
Fred, he'll get way more than 70bhp according to Revo

Much as it would pain me to do it, I'd stick out for the year with your current insurer. Then, at renewal time get all your quotes with the remap and stated power gains and get it remapped then.
IIRC your first year with an insurer they will properly try and screw you over if you cancel (I have a feeling you'll get no refund for the remaining 4 months but I'm not 100%).
Also, having a blanket BHP gain is ludicrous in this day and age, a better way would surely be to do it as a percentage power increase (as all my insurers have asked previously), with 100BHP making a 44% increase in power over the stock (quoted) figure. Also, we all know that there are many cars out there regularly exceeding the quoted power - even APR measured a (I think) US spec non PP GTI at 235 BHP (from a quoted figure of 210), meaning an increase on your car (for instance) of 82BHP (or 34%)
Insurers are a funny bunch. Had a tuning box on mine and took it off, rang my insurer to let them know and my policy was reduced by... Zero.
Funnily enough though, I bet they would have put up the price if I added it though!!

There was a lot to read

Go with LV, they're really good. Only cost me £35 more with a Shark map stage 1 taking my old Octavia VRS TSI 220 up to 290+ on the rolling road.
