Hi all,
I currently have a GTI TCR, which has been great apart from a knocking or rattling noise coming from the cabin. Best I can tell its on the drivers side in the rear somewhere.
Before I go to the bother of taking it to the dealer has anyone else had a similar noise and been able to track it down and fix it? I would rather do this than go to the trouble of driving to the dealers.
Thanks,
Chris

The seat backrest catches / latches are known to rattle on some cars. This was also an issue on the mk6 Golf. If you lower the seat backrest and the noise stops, then that’s the likely source of your noise.
There’s a cheap and easy DIY fix to stop the rattling noise. If you lower the rear seat backrest and wrap some electrical insulating tape around the metal loop that the backrest catch latches onto, it removes any ‘slack’ between the metal loop and the catch, and stops the noise when the backrest is raised again and secured in the upright position.
I had this on my mk6 and the above fix worked. If you regularly raise and lower your rear seat backrest and the tape starts to wear through, its cheap, quick and easy to replace it with some more tape. My initial repair never needed re-doing in the (nearly) five years I owned my mk6 though.

You not having much luck with cabin noise are you! across the two main forums of GTI and VWROC there is very little posting to cabin rattles, some, but not many and being in my 7th year of MK 7 ownership the only rattle had that had no idea where was coming from for a few days, was from my sunglasses in the overhead cubby hole.
Reason state that this issue is not historic or endemic on the model is to provide some confidence that once identified its likely a simple and easy fix such as a rear seat catch or maybe a passenger even leaving something in the door pocket
Might be an idea to have someone sit in the back as you drive as they can really pick out the source
Be interesting to see what actually is the root cause

Tell me about it, PITA.

Cheers, I will try this. Funny enough I had that problem on my S3 and this fixed it.

I had a rattle in mine but a trip to the dealer sorted the problem, turns out it was something to do with a clip for the lights in the sun visor. Never thought it would have been that as I was convinced it was coming from the passenger side door card. Always worth a quick visit to the dealer's first IMO.

Noise is a strange thing in pinpointing the direction, I honestly did not even think it was my sunglasses, was convinced it was the glove box, or on the passenger side door, the window etc, but it was sunglasses in an awkward position and so rattled,
Like said, worth having someone else listen while driving and agree with the above, as a complete time saver go to the dealer who should be pretty up to speed with the MK 7/7.5 nuances.

Just fixed a knock on mine, sounded like suspension but it was the centre plastic nut had come loose on the spare wheel fixing. Tightened it up and it is silent again.
-
I can see why dealers hate these, could be coming from anywhere by the sounds of it.

The rattle on mine was from a plastic cover piece, under the steering wheel, above where your knees are. It is meant to be fixed by a locating tongue at one end and a screw at the other. The screw was fitted, but the tongue end was just hanging loose, so it rattled. Easy to fix.

I had a noise on mine from osr seat latch, so definitely an area to check.
Fix mine as suggested below.

Going to add to niggles and ask everyone a question
rear passenger noticed that when opened door the seat became immediately wet - It seems there is water ingress to the inner door where it pools, and when you open door it dumps onto the seat edge.
I have given good clean and smoothed over the seals, which all actually look ok, so will see if that resolves, but anyone else had this?
-
You can't resolve it, it's the shape of the roof that causes water to drop on the seats. Does it on the front too.

7th year in a MK 7, same passenger, same door, never been an issue before though have had the drivers door 'plop' of water you mention on a particularly wet day - not rained since so will see if reoccurs
Was on road at 6 am this morning, climate screen first real use in anger, and worth every penny as the iced screen melted away :)

We have had rather a lot of rain recently
-
Update, it does seem to have been the latches on the rear folding seats. Bit of tape seems to have sorted the problem.

It’s good when it’s a quick and easy fix that you can do yourself, rather than from a source that’s difficult to pinpoint.
Here’s to many miles of rattle free driving .

is it the "rolling log" sound from the rear suspension??..if so fit the rear subframe harmonic damper from the Audi A3 saloon ….I did a How-to guide over on the MK7 Golf forum...

Thanks! A very comprehensive write-up. Bookmarked for future reference. Both my 7.5 Golf's have had this noise, although really only noticeable on certain sections of road. Will price the part and if reasonable, fit one.
