Title: Fuel filler flap
Post by: Upperoilcan on 21 November 2019, 20:54
So I have my  14 plate GTI and I have a problem opening the flap to put petrol into the car.

It's an intermittent issue as sometimes it will open and sometimes it won't.

Are there any known issues?

Cheers.

Yes, google it, lots of information online. Mine was getting stuck and was sorted under warranty. It's making a bit of noise occasionally again. Get it sorted asap as it'll get stuck at a rather inconvenient moment...

Thanks for the reply, My car is under warranty from the garage I bought it from.

No recall from VW then?

My 2013 had this from the factory. I went to fill the car up for the first time and felt a right fool not been able to open the flap ! Was fixed under warranty. Supposedly they shaved a little bit off the flap somewhere to stop it getting stuck.

That's what they told me too.

The issue on early mk7 Golfs was generally the fuel flap actuator pin was catching on the part of the filler flap that it slots into when the car is locked. The actuator pin then didn’t (or couldn’t) retract far enough or not at all the next time the car was unlocked, preventing the flap from being opened.

As @Carbon VW has said, VW’s solution was to shave some of the plastic off the offending part on the inside of the filler flap to stop the actuator pin getting stuck.

It’s possible that if this problem is now happening for the first time on a 14 plate GTI, then it might be the fuel flap actuator that’s faulty and showing signs of failure, in which case it would need replacing.

Might just need a spot of lube.

Mine started playing up yesterday, which is bad/annoying timing as just had 5 visits to the dealer to sort out the rather damp headlight

Mine sticks occassionally too.
Bit of lube sorts it, usually petrol when filling up!!!
