Title: Really strange question
Post by: Sootchucker on 15 November 2019, 07:43
Hi all, I don't expect many answers to this question as it's a bit of a strange one, but I thought I'd give it a go anyway.

I recently updated my Radio station database directly from VW as a lot of stations were coming though with either no logos or the wrong logos attached. I got it from here:

https://webspecial.volkswagen.de/vwinfotainment/int/en/index/downloads#/ (https://webspecial.volkswagen.de/vwinfotainment/int/en/index/downloads#/)

this seems to be the latest database, but unfortunately whilst it has corrected a number of stations, at least 3 that I listen to the most are still with the wrong station logo, and even if I download a new one and install it, when I view the station on the info screen (with the large station logo to the right and station / track info to the left), they still appear wrong (or nothing at all).

I've had a look at the 7zip package that's downloaded (RSDB_VW_Multi_EU_v1.10.10.7z) and on decompressing it, it seems there's only one file of a significant size which resides in the "Common" folder, and that is "stl.1vw" and it's 111mb in size. I'm thinking that this file contains the main database of station logos for the whole of Europe ?

My question is (eventually) does anyone know if it's possible to "hack" or open this file and change some of the logos of a few of the stations to what they should be ?

I did it a while ago but you can download a station logo that isn’t on the list separately. I just googled a certain station logo and added it to my sd card.

Yeah, I've done that myself many times, trouble is that only affect the logo that's displayed on the main station preset screen. The minute you change to the station info screen, you often either get no logo at all (just a place holder) or the wrong logo.

I think this package from VW, is supposed to update the internal database of stations on the radio so that it knows all about the particular station. trouble is I don't think the database is complete or up to date on the UK stations (certainly not DAB anyway) ?

Here's an example.

On this screen I'm listening to "Greatest Hits Radio" - Preset 5

If you then change to the "station Info Screen" as below....

I get this (wrong logo - right station)

Another strange question - why the DIY stickers on both buttons?!   :embarrassed:

Because I've got OCD and i hated seeing the little tick mark on the power button not at 12 O'clock, so I bought a sticker to cover it up  >:D >:D

The one on the right is factory and how the unit was shipped, it's just that you can't normally see if unless you photograph it in the right light.

Ah, ok. I know badgeskins so a sticker but thought they normally covered the whole button not left a gap and didn't think there was any need for one on the RH one.

Good for you and you’re far from alone.

I don't like the idea of a sticker so I don't adjust the dial! My OH also knows not to touch it, not because she doesn't like seeing it at anything other than the 12 o/c position but due to the Paddington Bear stare she'll get...

That's what the steering wheel buttons are for

Yeah, but unfortunately the steering wheel buttons don't work when the ignition is off, and also when the wife is in the passenger seat !  ;D

I have to turn the ignition on to change the volume when parked. Also my wife either asks me to change the volume, or reaches over and uses the steering wheel to do it if we're not speaking.

The MIB2 used the QNX OS, now owned by BlackBerry, so if you have access to a unix / linux VM then VI or Photon, or any editor, should allow you to play with the file. What you'd need to do once in there I really wouldn't know but I'd guess that it should be straightforward to find the logo maps...:undecided:
