Title: Heating Inop.
Post by: dereks on 09 November 2019, 16:36
No the cold has arrived it appears my heater is on the blink. Car heats up fine(waterpump &thermostat recently done) but I’m getting virtually no heat through the vents. Leaving it running a while and there is a slight improvement but barely warm at best.

Anyone had this? Google would suggest possible heater matrix which sounds expensive.

It’s a 63 plate with 30k.

My only thought might be that there's some form of airlock in the heater matrix circuit from having the pump/thermostat done.

Have a look under the bonnet and check the hoses that go through the firewall to see if they're warm.

After that, I'd be stumped lol.

Thanks plan to have a closer look under the bonnet but it’s too cold just like in the car!

I've seen a few people with heater matrix problems on forums.... it does sound like its that to me.

And yes, that is expensive.

Looking likely...was planning on getting rid next summer so could do without the expense not sure I can get through a Scottish winter without it working.

Just to update.

Confirmed matrix block due to the bag in the header tanks splitting.

New matrix and header tank fitted and system flushed.

Now £500 lighter. Was done at an indie who is doing around 1 or 2 a week.

Ok, I was right

£500 is less than the £1500 main stealers want.

This is one of the reasons I'm not hanging onto a Mk7.x beyond 3 years :D

what exactly is the point of those bags, and can they be safely removed to prevent this ?

To preserve / extend the life of the coolant.

Would it not be better for people long term to just change the coolant every two years and get rid of the bag if they are an issue. Obviously VW won't want to do that though

Think the guy said it’s a modified tank now without the bag.

And a couple of the guys who work there have changed the tank as a precaution on there own cars.

We’re these bags installed in all Golfs including MK7.5 models ?

On 7Zap the part number is 5Q0121407A for the reservoir tank. Do you know the part number they fitted?
Thanks

My 2013 Mk7  GTi does not have this silica pack as far as I can see. Had a good look last night with a torch in the garage. I had thermostat housing failure in the car last year which resulted in no heating in cabin and engine not heating up to temp. They also changed out coolant temp sensor.

My very late 16 car, had one, it took around 15 minutes to remove bottle, silica pad and top up coolant afterwards.

*I will place an ad in the classifieds soon for the silica bag in case anyone needs a spare? :)

My May 2015 car does have it. I''m going to leave well alone as with my clumsiness I'll burst it trying to get it out.

Don’t think the header tank is expensive so may be worth changing that.

If you remove the header tank, it’s then a risk free job to pull the bag out. No point buying a new tank, which will be exactly the same shape anyway.
