Title: DNA Tuning
Post by: Endatheworld on 28 September 2019, 22:31
Hi Everybody.
Glad to be here and thanks for the add. I have a 2016 GTI PP Manual that's warranty is up and thinking of getting first tune. I contacted a few garages and came across a guy locally (I am in NI) who will do a Stage one tune for £180. Price seems very cheap but I have never heard of the software he is using. Its called DNA tuning? I have done a few searches online and they seem to be about a while but don't seem to be a popular tune. I see mention of them on this forum from 2009. Anybody used them or would recommend there maps?

Welcome Enda, good to have you along.

I’ve heard of DNA tuning but have zero experience of them (I’ve had around a dozen or more remaps so am reasonably familiar with the subject).
What a lot of these generic tuning companies do is buy in files from European tuning companies that sell both software and the hardware to write codes into ECUs. Anyone can buy this stuff.
The software might be absolutely fine, but it’s a gamble as to how smooth the power delivery will be and how the engine will behave under varying load conditions.
I’d risk a company like that on an older Diesel without all the emissions bolt ons as they’re very simple to tune (extra fuel, boost and try and keep EGT’s down).
With an expensive modern petrol engine with VVT and a chocolate clutch I’d be very wary.

The manual clutches are very weak so dumping a load of boost at peak spool (2000rpm ish) will wipe the clutch out in no time. They may well offer a low torque map though, be worth asking.

No disrespect to DNA but I’d rather wait for one of the big *specialist VW group* tuners to offer a Black Friday deal for around £500 or so and still be prepared to put in a new uprated clutch at some point if it starts to fail.
Personally I’d get a Burger Motorsports JB1 or JB4, fit it myself and play around with the settings (which I indeed did do on my earlier mk7’s) if the clutch didn’t agree with the shipped settings (I didn’t have any clutch issues with the standard settings, some people do). Or maybe a DTUK box (sorry Chris) which are often available second hand.

If your warranty is up I wouldn't bother with a dtuk 💩 box.

Boxes have other benefits over remaps such as resale value and the ease they can be removed should you need diagnostic work where it helps if the tech can use factory values rather than trying to work around someone’s brain tinkering.
Easier to bin off than a cheap remap if it’s discovered to be a bit 💩 too.

Thanks for the reply's. The guy who does the work comes recommended and  I would have no doubt he would stand over his work I just wasn't sure of the software he is using. Unfortunately where I live there is none of the "big boys" in the tuning world like REVO etc. I was thinking of going down the JB4 route before I found this guy. Might have a chat to him again before i make the decision.

I will post on here if i take the plunge either way.

£180 sounds very cheap for a remap and I'm a firm believer in the old saying 'you get what you pay for'. If I were you I'd wait for one of the big boys to have a sale then jump on a ferry. Bring the missus and make a weekend of it.

Or, if that isn't an option, go with a tuning box as suggested.
