Title: iOS 13 Updates.
Post by: Talk-torque on 28 September 2019, 11:20
Started this as a coverall for any iOS 13 topics of interest to us, as there could be a few.

Just discovered that you can now read files via SD card, USB, or whatever. Tried the micro SD card from my newly installed Nextbase 522 dash cam, via a lightning SD adaptor, that I normally use for photos from cameras, and it works! So now you can access video directly onto an iPad without using the flaky app and wifi connection. Well pleased!

Not tried Carplay yet, but I know there are some improvements to that.

You get album art on CarPlay now

It is displayed properly now then rather than blurred in the background?

Apple carplay is greatly improved and now no longer looks like it was designed by a 4 year old.

Yes, album art appears (not blurred), and the whole things looks much smarter.

About my only compliant is that the Artist and track name (be it spotify, Tune in Radio etc), is limited to the 1st line only so quite often the text get's truncated, where as in Android Auto, it wraps around to the second line. Maybe it's a update Apple will include with a future update ?

I presume you’re viewing it on the new default split screen which also shows the maps? If so, just launch Spotify or Apple Music in full screen mode.

Has anyone else had and issue where it won’t read texts now, or is it just me?

iOS 13.1.1 was released last week and 13.1.2 was released last night with a few bug fixes. I don’t recall CarPlay being in the release notes but try updating again then re-test it.

I’m having a few niggles, other than Carplay, most annoyingly with finger print recognition, so guessing there will be a major update before too long. I don’t use reading text, so can’t comment on that, but the Carplay home screen looks a better effort.

Starting to suspect that a screen lockup thing with Waze may be iOS13 related.

Only Apple Maps though.

Apple, once again, render a brilliant new function utterly useless with their narrow thinking. How long did it take them to allow the Google apps to be available on iOS, I just hope it's not going to be the same here.

Selecting which 'default' maps app is used for viewing/opening map links, is available on iOS, so why not on CarPlay. In the UK there is absolutely no practical or valid reason to use Apple maps over GM or Waze.

It’s very deliberate to make it slightly jarring to use anything outside the Apple eco-system. They’ll support it eventually but like to give their own products a head start. Other examples are no Siri support for Spotify (but that’s coming soon), no proper Spotify support on Apple Watch (unless the phone is nearby), whereas Apple Music can store offline music directly on the watch. It’s all about getting a competitive edge and then making it difficult to diverge from their ecosystem. They do eventually come round, just before they start getting hit with anti-trust law suits usually.

Yeah the update has fixed the issue

It's obvious why they do it..... but I still don't understand, as everyone knows Google maps are the standard, and I bet the VAST majority switch "back" to Google maps as soon as the functionality becomes available

Waze is better than both because you get speed camera alerts and real-time traffic alerts with intelligent re-routing to avoid delays. Apple are rebuilding their entire maps application from the ground up, working with TomTom and new satellite imagery and their version of Street View.  It’s launched in the States and will be in the UK next year I believe.

IMO Waze UI is absolutely horrible, it's like maps for kids. Also, Google Maps now has speed camera alerts (although they're not all there, and they're only if you're navigating). But, they're coming

Google own Waze, they bought them a few years ago and features are starting to span both products. I like Google, don’t get me wrong, but the live interactive ability of Waze can’t be beaten to avoid traffic, police on the side of the road, pothole alerts and so on.

I'm well aware Google own Waze. What I mean is, you can't give a blanket statement like "Waze is better than both", especially not for the reason given (speed cameras). It's all about opinion. I've heard more stories about Waze giving people crazy diversions to avoid 1min delays than I have about GM

Each to their own. I’ll carry on using Waze thanks 😬

Waze’s route algorithm is “OK” at best because routing relies on crowd data rather than the fixed predefined AND live data algorithms in Google maps.

For local inner city runs, Waze can be good for queue avoidance (due to a high propensity of taxi drivers using it) but I agree that out on the open road it’s poor. I also find that it’ll only adjust a route once, so if the route clears again (because it’s taken all the traffic from the traffic jam!) it doesn’t adjust back.

For local trips I use waze, but in the main I run Google Maps and have Waze running in the background (you don’t need to set a route for this to work) for camera/cop alerts.

“Waze running in the background (you don’t need to set a route for this to work) for camera/cop alerts”

This is also true.

I expect (no pun intended) peoples mileage with Waze may vary. I live in Norfolk and drive to Cambridge occasionally and it works really well avoiding massive jams on the A14/A11.

Interesting. I'll give Waze a go next time I'm heading into the city.

Can you do the Waze/GM combo with Android Auto? How does Waze notify you?

Yes, you just open the app so that it’s running, then open another app such as music or Google Maps so that is on-screen. As you approach speed cameras, police, traffic  or pot holes, a Waze pop-up (and voice notification unless it’s muted) will appear on the screen.

Waze also shows jams, with a wider orange road marking, with average speeds. Seems more “live”, because of the user input. I use waze for traffic info on the middle screen and the car nav for routes on the dash screen. The system won’t let you have 2 systems navigating, so you can’t compare live.

iOS 13 Issue with MIB1 and Apple Music

I have an issue with playing Apple Music on my MIB1 head unit. When playing a playlist only, not an album, I am unable to skip forward a track using the car’s controls. This happens on all playlists. Very strange. Has anyone else has this issue? Obviously I have no Apple Car play.
