Title: My Mk6 Gti has issues when stuck in traffic
Post by: drokkeh on 10 September 2019, 08:51
Hi All

So as per the subject my GTI seems to really struggle if its stuck in traffic for a length of time.  Its happened twice now.  Happened yesterday when I was stuck on a B road for about an hour crawling at 5mph stop/start due to an accident ahead.

First thing that happens (after about 30 mins of very slow moving/idling) is the yellow emission control lamp came on (permanent).

About 5 mins after this the engine starts juddering.  10 mins later the yellow EPC light comes on.

I made the mistake of turning the ignition off and then it wouldnt start/turn over for about 3-4 mins.

54K on the clock - last service was in February this year.

When it's not stuck in a jam its absolutely fine no issues at all, drives smooth and no warning lights on dash.

Any ideas on the cause/what to check for?

Maybe the evap system. Maybe the canister or N80 purge valve as its happening at tickover.
Best to get it scanned by somone with VCDS, Vagcom and see what codes come up as its guess work withoit more info.

Thanks.  I'm assuming VCDS-lite will not work on a 2012 GTI?

From VCDS website:

"VCDS-Lite is our low cost solution for older (pre-2006) VW-Audi Group cars that do not require a direct CAN diagnostic connection.  "

I don't know.
You could ask on another part of the forum, you could also ask if any member in your area has VCDS Vagcom and see if they would give it a quick scan for you.

So this happened again the other day.  Yellow emission lamp came on dash after driving about an hour.  Scanned it with odb11 and it threw up these codes.

Fault Code: P2178 system too rich off idle, Bank 1
Status: Intermittent

Fault Code: P2188 System too rich at idle Bank1
Status: Intermittent

Is this possibly the MAF or oxygen sensor?

Cheers
