Title: Which one...
Post by: Chugadub on 13 October 2005, 14:23
Howdy all,

Ok, this is simple -

I need 5 good reasons why a mk2 8v  beats all other golfs.
I have mates insisting mk1's and mk3's(?!!) are superior, i need arguments why not....

thanks

Look mate, the mk3 golf is doggy poo. Don't get one of them. As for the mk2/mk1 debate well it's your choice. Personally I would get a mk1 cab. If you get one of the later models then it could be the same year as the mk2, only better as it's a mk1. You will get noticed more and people will envey you for owning one.

i wouldn't say the 8v is the best mk2 (even though i own one)

but it has to be
style
handling
weight (over the mk3)
build (over the mk1)
diversity. pretty much no 2 mk2 gti's are alike.

to quote davidhawkins quote from a wolfsburg engineer, ''the mk1 was the prototype, the mk2 was the real thing''

anyway, let your mates get a lardy mk3 and then whoop them while having fun and looking good!

mk 2  8v         112bhp      922kg       113mph      9.0s

mk 3 16v        147bhp    1240kg        139mph     8.3s

There's one reason why your mk2 is better than my mk3 (and three reasons why my mk3 is better than your mk2!)

mk2 mate, my reason for you is that there so much you can do to a mk2 for next to nothing, ive spent under 500 quid on getting a mk2 and lowering it and buying all sorts of other visual bits and bobs, mk1s are still really cool and retro but i suspet youde have a challenge finding one in good condition, whereas youll find hundreads of mk2s, ive only been driving a year and ive been thru 3 myself, (i foolishly buggered up the other two), notice i didnt mention mk3s, thats cause theyre a waste of time, get a mk2

Hahahaha,

ok, plenty of ammo there....thanks.

Yep I already have myself the car ive wanted for years, big bumper 8v 3-door gti, even got it in my bestest colour. Its the dark met. blue (almost black), anyone know what the colours called? But my mate has just gone and got a mk3, fool. So im gonna go out and laugh as i cruise past in 3rd... Now i just need to work on getting more than 18mpg, its getting quite expensive an ive only had it two weeks. poo.

Mikey moo started thread by saying mk2 8v is better than ALL other golfs, not just mk3 8v. Hence the comparison. I like most golfs, if money was no object would like to own mk1, 2, 3 (16v) and 5 gti's. Apologies to the mk4 boys, just not my cup of tea, but you probably won't be browsing the mk2 section anyway!

16v, 16v limited or g60 mk2 anything else is just a time killer they had in Wolfsburg to make the best selling underpowered car.
Mk1 classic car but not for me
Mk2 got it absolutely bang on
Mk3 Euro box, euro imposed safety this and heavy that, handles like a barge! heavy car engines not powerful enough.
Mk2 v mk3 well lighter, lower, better handling, better looking, and no euro imposed balls added to mk2's

Every Golf is different and different folks like different cars but for me Mk2 everytime.

And as was said above compare mk2 16v to mk3 16v and mk2 8v to mk3 8 valve otherwise why bother? scared the mk2 will make more sense? we all know they're a better car! !!!! :D

Is it the same colour as mine, LA5U - Royal blue metallic? Look at the sticker in your owners manual, or the sticker in the boot, under the carpet. If your car is a 1990/91 it's likely to be.

18mpg - I know what you mean I'm lucky if I get that from my 8v. The trouble is having that much under right foot is irresistable. It's like being in hospitial connected to a self morphine dosage, you kind a get used to having a quick fix on tap...........

Seriously I've had both and I love both of them, hoewever for an out ant drivers car the MK1 wins for me. They are awesome around the lanes, great off the line and so cool looking.

My MK2 is currently sitting on standard suspension, should be dropped 40mm by the weekend (fingers crossed) also got a set of struts & bushes going on all round by the end of the month. I expect to see a major increase in handling so my opinion may change shortly.
