I was amazed recently to see the UK SMMT sales figures which sees the Golf in 2nd place. I know it's always be a perennial top 10 seller but to now lie in 2nd place, especially as the Mk7.5 will be replaced next year is a remarkable achievement. You can perhaps see why VW aren't too concerned about the Mk8 launch slipping.

So what’s no 1 - Fiesta ?
-
Going by the number of Golf Rs I see on the road, I'm not surprised

Yes and only by a few...

It does actually seem to me that the GTI is the more exclusive car...
-
Agree completely..... until we had a drive out yesterday and saw 3 GTI PP inside of 5 minutes, wouldn't mind but all in the same colour too! (fyi - white silver) same old story, never any on the roads until you own one!

They’ll be out on the roads but I don’t think you notice them or specifically look for them until you own one .

I don't think I've seen another white silver. And it is certainly a head turner! I get so many comments on it

Probably the same one circling!
I do see a few more now over the last few months, before that it was plenty of GTDs, a few Rs and a very rare GTI sighting.
-
I must admit round my way the the GTI is really exclusive. Think I've only seen one other in the last 2-3 weeks. R's are much more common but not nearly as much as GTD's. On the road leading up to our housing estate, there are no less than 6 GTD's on that one road !
Never seem to be that many until I sold mine for the GTI ?
-
Not that I'm knocking the GTD, still a great car but with the economy that you can get from the GTI, unless you're doing silly miles it's surely a no brainer these days!?!? No abuse please, just my opinion!
-
…..and this may get some reactions, but besides the slightly more exclusive car, I'm sorry but the later GTI PP sound soooo good, even better than the R's!!
Because I brought mine pre-owned I actually looked underneath to see if some one had done a res delete on it!
-
25% better MPG from a GTD vs a GTI (assuming you aren't just driving 5 miles in traffic to work every day).
25% saving of fuel costs, not exactly to be sniffed at.... plus less CO2 (for those that care about such things...)
-
On my 3rd petrol car after a string of crappy diesel company cars and not sure I could go back to the black stuff. Unless my circumstances changed commute and work-wise. I'd take electric over a 4 cylinder diesel.
-
Yeah electric is the way forward.... at some point.

While your general point is correct, I'm not sure on the maths!
25% increase in MPG results in a 20% saving.
-
20-25 percent increase in economy, but 20-25 percent reduction in power and no matter how good VW diesels are, no where near as refined..... have to agree with the earlier comments, I’ll be going hybrid before I go back to a 4 pot diesel, might be something to do with me only having a mile commute to the office though!
-

Have you thought about a bicycle?

Or maybe walking if there are footpaths en route .
-
My commute to work since April is about 20 yards as I now work from home, hence the 3300 miles on mine since I picked her up new in December.
2nd best selling car? - not surprised, large range to choose from, rock solid build quality and strong residuals. GTI is superb, drives like a normal family hatchback around town, a bit heavier on the right foot and it turns into a real hooligan - what’s not to like?
-
I have to say, being the *cough* "wrong" side of 50, I was at first perhaps a little self conscious at getting the GTI, when perhaps a Jag or a Lexus more suited my advancing years, but I have to say, it's a hoot. Frugal, quiet and as civilised as you could want (especially with the excellent DCC), but can really motor when it wants to.
The thoughts that I need to "grow up and act my age" quickly vanished as not only is the Golf such a versatile car, but still somehow manages to cross that age and social status boundary like no other car I know can. It's as at home at a young persons club meet, as it is at a fine country hotel or posh restaurant etc. Whilst I am sure they are excellent cars, I don't think you could say the same about a Focus ST or a Honda Civic Type R.
Having had a Golf MK1, MK2, MK3, MK5 and 3 MK7's, my opinion is the MK7 is the best of the bunch, and I can only think to knock it off it's throne, the MK8 will have to be something very special indeed ?

I've thought about both but neither sound quite so good on cold start...….

Sootchucker - I have to agree totally, approaching mid 40's myself and I did get some stick from friends (non-petrol heads) over both my R and GTI PP, comments along the lines of mid-life crisis etc. But tell me another car that can be invisible or an absolute riot depending on your mood?
FYI - one of the 'mid-life crisis friends' is now considering buying one!!

Such a good car that can adapt to a lot of different situations and environments. Never looks out of place.
One of my most enjoyable run-outs was 85 miles round the Peaks with a mate in his GT4. 7 am on a Saturday morning, not much traffic and some great local roads. Hardly anything between them most of the time.

My previous 7.5 230 GTI was just as much fun and kept up (and left some!) around Wales with a bunch of mates in more powerful stuff. Twisty roads on the way to and around the Brecons and the GTI was in its element.

And yet it does nursery runs, commute to work, tip trips, and can get all my detailing stuff in as well for regular jobs.

Now they look like some good days!!!
and I like your style, get your mates to drive around the country with you on some cracking roads and then charge them when they want their motors detailing afterwards!

I'm 67 just sold my GTI P/P ( great car ) for an Audi S3. Still own a '83 MK1 GTI Cab. and love driving around in our Beetle Convertible. Age? what's that. It's only a number. I'm not ready for a pipe and slippers car yet.

Yes, that's about right!
The XKR had a full machine polish and ceramic as did the GT4

Just found out what the UKs 3rd best selling car was in August, after the Fiesta and Golf.....
No wonder they are having trouble delivering them all!
1. Ford Fiesta 3,978
2. VW Golf 3,439
3. Tesla Model 3 2,082

Thats quite shocking when you compare it to these figures:
https://www.best-selling-cars.com/britain-uk/2016-full-year-britain-best-selling-car-models/
For 12 months in 2016 the Fiesta averaged over 10,000 a month. No wonder the motor trade is worried.
