Title: GTi - Coolant light issue
Post by: GTI2016 on 10 August 2019, 12:05
Hi All,

I've been having an intermittent coolant issue recently with the MK7 GTi PP.

After 30 mins or so of driving the red coolant light comes on. I let pressure out of the system by opening the cap and the coolant level comes back to normal; its like pressure is builds up forcing down the coolant level.

Has anyone come across this before and found the cause?

Any thoughts would be great!

Bet it’s the usual water pump / thermostat and housing issue.

I've had my GTi PP 5.5 years, nearly 37K miles. Just had to have the water pump, thermostat etc all replaced. Cost £785 at a local non-VW garage. Apparently it's a right nightmare to do. I'd keep a close eye on your temperature, and if it starts creeping higher than normal, get it into a garage swiftly.

Or take out a private  warranty now and the water pump will more than cover the cost !

Did you top up the coolant when the engine was cold. The fix is not that expensive if it is the water pump if you use a specialist independent, it is expensive if you use a main stealer.
