Title: Coolant management and water pump issues
Post by: Ginagee on 25 July 2019, 17:01
Yesterday I enjoyed reading the forum thread '6 Years Old.' Having my Mk7 2014 PP GTI for 5.5 years, I was tempted to add to the thread about how delighted I still am with it and how reliable it is.
How I laughed when I set off to pick my Dad up from hospital yesterday afternoon and the engine light came on 1 mile down the road. I think the thread may have jinxed it!
The engine temperature then proceeded to go over 100ºC. Engine off, check oil etc... let it cool down. Limped it to our local garage.
After running diagnostics, turns out it was to do with the computer wizardry management of the coolant. And after further investigation, it probably needs a new water pump too. This sounds expensive.
I've looked to see if there were any recalls regarding this problem but can't find any. Does anyone know of any? It has only done 35K. Many thanks in advance.

Water pump problems?

Definitely really common on Mk7's... but I seem to remember its been a Golf problem over various different iterations too...

See if the link above works-my pump went a few weeks ago- the pump was £335 from VW (couldnt seem to find anyone else who had them in stock) then about 20 quid or so for other bits (coolent etc) then my pal fitted it for me for £100.

They have modified the replacement pumps-old one was all plastic, the new ones have a steel body and impellor I think now.

I would love to know VW's price for this!! Good luck.

Usually you need to change the housing as well which has the sensors in it.

Mines went after 5 years and 25k.

This is a known issue to VW.
Assuming the car is out of warranty, if you push or have a relationship with your VW garage, I have known of goodwill being offered.

Thanks ever so much. I don't have an on going relationship with the dealership since the warranty ran out. I always take it to our trusted local garage. But interesting to know it is a know issue. Thank you for the advice, good to know & I'll discuss with the garage. In the meantime, I'm driving a bright yellow Peugeot 107!!!!!!

Yes, I think you are right- my pal sourced mine as a kind of kit from VW (I think he basically phoned VW parts and asked them what do I need to change the electronic water pump) and we swapped the housing as well, I think the thermostat is part of it.

I suppose if its the only non wear and tear thing to go out of warranty then although painful it’s not catastrophic for the bank balance.
One of those situations where a goodwill gesture from VW would be appreciated as it’s not a cheap repair.
More expensive than a VW extended warranty would perhaps cost if there’s no goodwill payment but you’d have had to have previous years warranties too which would have mounted up in costs if no previous claims made.

Going off recent experiences with VW UK, I think that goodwill gestures from them are now dead and buried. The only goodwill gestures you'll get are from the supplying dealership, out of their own pocket, in the hope that you'll soon be buying another car from them as yours is out of warranty.

VW strictly imposed a 6500 mile/6 month clause on me for "adjustments" (I was at 5800 miles/7 months when I realised that the paint on the bottom edge of my tailgate was being chipped due to the strike plate being too far in, pulling the tailgate right in. They dismissed the claim on this 6 month clause I was unaware of, despite a local dealership technically supporting it as a misbuild.

Even trying to emphasise my brand loyalty - 10 VWs owned from new had no sway with the contracted customer services rep. You never get to talk to a decision maker directly.

VW UK advised me to pressure the supplying dealership to do it - they're 200 miles away and were reluctant to do it as they thought it should be VWs responsibility.

VW goodwill seems to have been sacrificed on the altar of paying for dieselgate. My fix would've been all labour and no cost of parts. In the end I pulled the lip trim off the boot interior and adjusted the strike plate myself (a 15 min job) and touched up the tiny paint chips on the interior bottom edge of the tailgate. Perhaps you'd still get access to cheap/free parts, but not labour under goodwill.

VW have ended their factory warranty extension - costing them too much? Audi still do it though, and for the same kind of money (£500/5 years).

I had the warranty extension on my R and had to dip into it for my DAB reception  - dodgy signal booster, nothing major for the 10 months into warranty extension I still had the car. My car's warranty was hardly tested by mileage though - 46 months old and 30k miles on the clock when I sold it.

Thanks monkeyhanger. It's at our local (non VW) garage. We have been going to them for years. As soon as the service cover I purchased with the GTi ran out, I started taking it to them. They are brilliant, diligent and never over charge. They do however say, replacing the water pump is a nightmare job! It might be tomorrow or Wednesday until I get it back as they need to order more parts.

Driving to Manchester in that 107 on the M62 in the downpour yesterday was no fun!!!! Unbelievable how badly other drivers treat you in it. One guy overtook me in a 30 zone, only to turn right just a few yards further up the road. What a g*t. Really looking forward to getting the GTi back.

Hoorah! Got the GTi back. Multiple fault codes - Coolant flow regulator valve partially stuck open. Replaced parts: Coolant valve, electric thermostat, water pump and union (all VAG OEM) antifreeze and 4 hours labour: £653 Ex VAT. So pleased to get it back.

I find other drivers to be really aggresive when I drive my OH's Lupo, she does too. It's ridiculous as you are driving at the same speed as everyone else yet you get bullied  Never get it in the GTI nor in any of my previous cars.
