Hi
Looks like I might need to replace my original 2013 battery.
Does anyone have recommendations for which battery that’s not main dealer ?
Am I right in thinking it is a AGM or is it EFB as some companies say it’s either ?
And can a independent workshop code the battery in your experience?
Thanks

Check Euro car parts as they've always got weekend discounts off. Pretty sure it's AGM for stop/start cars and any decent garage will be able to code it in. If not then plenty of people with vcds or OBD11 will be able to.
-
Thanks for the advice

Nice price for a BOSCH with a 5 year warranty.

Anyone with an obdeleven can code it for you, it's pretty easy.

Good price, I had the RAC out and they fitted the same battery for about £190. 5 year guarantee and he did all the recoding.

I went for the Halfords 096AGM Start/Stop AGM 12V Car Battery 4 Year Guarantee at £125 with the Trade Card, easy to DIY fit and code with OBDEleven.

Not sure this is much help but I just checked my 2016-plate GTi and it came with a Sebang EFB battery 6R0 915 105B.

Mine still seems OK, always 70 - 80% when I check the state of charge. It will no doubt be due for replacement soon as 7 years might be pushing it.
I will go with Varta or Bosch 096 AGM when the time comes. Many bad experiences of so called value batteries.

For info - mine seemed stuck at 80% leading up to it failing. I ended up with jumper cables in the boot (just in case) which I only needed once when it went totally.

My "state of charge " on the MFD was showing 0% for some time, despite a few good runs. The stop start hadn't been working for weeks and the display screen said "Power Consumption High". I hadn't yet got a "low battery" warning but i sensed it wouldn't be long coming.
My car is just over 3 years old. I took the decision to replace with a Halfords (Yuasa) 096 AGM and they coded it too. Just about every single warning light came on when fitted, all but one disappeared upon driving, I had a persistent ACC Error afterwards but this has finally cleared now too.

Last few weeks my battery has started telling me it needs charging and yesterday when I went to the car it wouldn’t start at all. Turned all electrics off and it started fourth time of asking. Drove it home, seven miles. Went out later , another 7 miles or so and then back to work this morning ... SOC said 0% when I then checked it...does this mean battery is knackered. Three years old.. 3 weeks out of warranty. Would the battery have been covered by the warranty? Only asking as it had MOT and service 2 days before warranty expired.
-
Juicetin - apart from the 0% tSOC indication, exactly the same symptoms as mine.
Pixwix - sounds like yours might fail soon and there's a chance they might cover it. It's on the standard 3 year warranty and if you ask, they might either cover it, or maybe partially cover it. You'd have to ask.
-
Thanks Gnasher, I’ll give them a call. Cross fingers
-
So I’ve just called service department... £60 diagnostic as out of warranty, they want the car 2 days and they can’t confirm whether they’ll be able to help me towards cost of battery is determined to be at fault.
And of course their cost of a battery is more than buying one elsewhere. Dunno whether to just get a new battery from somewhere else .
-
What coding needs to be done when replacing the battery?
-
The battery has to be "recognised" by the car using the serial number, so all the electrics are optimised. When the fitter codes it it comes up with a list of battery manufacturers and type fitted.
Pixwix, i've had my fair share of protracted dealer hassles, i would be tempted to splash out on a new one and be done with it.

3 weeks out of warranty and no firm offer of goodwill. VW are just showing themselves up to be a complete bunch of sheisters lately. Goodwill is dead. Have all the marques gone the same way, or just VAG?
It all seems a bit abrupt to go 3 weeks after warranty and the dealership servicing not noticing it was on it's way out.
They used to provide an end of warranty inspection to catch things that didn't look to healthy and get them replaced before the warranty runs out.
Probably don't bother now because the hoops that VW make them jump through to get a claim verified/approved and the labour rate paid for warranty work by VW doesn't make it worth their while to chase.
Do you know of any indy places that might test your battery's recharging capability before they'll sell you a new one, to rule out the alternator or some other system in the car?
If you bite the bullet and buy a battery, have you tried Costco?
-
I’m thinking it might be easier just to get a new car

Another VW? Right there - that's why VW stopped doing extended factory warranties and why goodwill has evaporated. They want you to keep buying new VWs and not keeping them beyond 3 years, because you dare not have one out of warranty.

Oh no.. I’d better go read the thread where someone was extolling the virtues of their 6 year old car just to try and cheer myself up... first time for a few years I’ve had a car out of warranty  . Was going to hang onto it as struggling to get same spec on a facelift for price I want to pay. Plus didn’t want to get back into the ‘is it going to get nicked’ headspace that a new(er) car might send me to.
Btw car started perfectly tonight , SOC display is now ——%

Sod's law. You religiously change within warranty, the one time you don't, you get punished for it.
If you are after another Golf, chances are, a MK8 is going to cost you miles more than a MK7.5 GTI right now. Higher RRP, little or no access to discounts for the first year or so after release, and it looks like it's going to be a bit ugly vs MK7.5, just as MK6 was when compared with the MK5.
Now we've got to fund 2 cars in the household, we have 2 Polo GTI+. If my wife hadn't learned to drive, I'd have probably spent all the budget on an RS3.
-

needs coding because of the start stop system. If you don't have start stop then any replacement battery will do.

My thoughts exactly re the Mk8, I just didn’t get myself sorted in time so had to service , mot and 2 new tyres. So now really indecisive about changing, current spec includes leather and Dynaudio both of which I’d probably have to forgo when changing, especially as my options are limited as I want a manual with under 500 miles. All my car buying life I’ve been after cars which are the proverbial ‘rocking horse s*#t’. 😀

Update- garage confirmed battery needed replacing, quoted £240 and said VW wouldn’t help toward the cost. I rang VW customer services, explained situation, they rang garage.... battery fitted FOC. Glad I made that call!
Still undecided on whether to swap or not though...

Wow, didn't expect that, given my recent experiences. Maybe the difference is work that's all parts and very little labour, vs a job that's all labour and time consuming. It must cost VW very little to send out a battery and assign 30 mins labour to the job.
