Title: very annoying, metalic sound at 2200 and 2800 revs...
Post by: mjoe on 12 October 2005, 22:48
can i get some advice ?

When warmed up, i hear a strange metalic sound (all gears) at 2200 and again at 2800 revs - seems fine anywhere else
First I thought it might be the exhaust - maybe a bit loose at the front  - or maybe a lump of carbon rattling around in it (when I go the car last feb, oil was way over the max mark), but not sure. The exhaust seems secure etc.. thought it might be the clutch as the sound not there in neutral but i dont think there is any significant loss in pick up (could be in denial there though!!).

any ideas ??

Have you got a standard exhaust?

I think it is a standard exhaust - nothing fancy - although the end pipes are straight cut rather than curved downward (might have been cut by previous owner ?).

Its a 98 reg mk3 2.0ltr 8V.

Sounds like you have the classic Mk3 problem here . It is probably the Cat Heat Sheild , they have a tendancy to come a little loose and normally make abit of noise in the rev range .

Thanks for info !

it does'nt sound too serious - is it easy fix (tighten bolts etc) or is there more to it ?

No they aint easy to fix mate! Learn to live with it - I have for over a year now!

The heatshield and that is definitely your problem, is welded to the manifold/downpipe. Its not accessible to weld back on the car. I was advised its a pig of a job to take off the downpipe etc. so best left until its really necessary.

yeah mine does this, for ages i thought it was the downpipe heat shield but the other day i was under the car fitting an exhaust and had a look at the cat shield ,it was loose so i clipped it back on and the rattle has not been half as bad.
i'm gonna have another look when i have more time.i'll let you know if it helps.
just a thought

If the downpipe heatsheild is loose then tie it up with some big jubilee clips.

i had this problem with my 95 mk3 gti its was the heat shield on the manifold, but a mate of mine welded it back on for me, took him about 10 mins, didnt have to take anything off he just got under the car and sorted it, no more rattle! so it can be fixed quite easily
