I’ve been using the Navigation display option on the Active Info display, as I prefer the smaller dials when this option is selected.
I find the dials too large when the navigation is not selected, anyone else find this? I can’t seem to see that the dials can be smaller in any other option/displays or is that me being a technophobe?
I only have the discover standard nav system so can’t have the navigation on both screens. I have been having radio or Android Auto displayed on the main larger infortainment screen.
-
Yes, exactly the same here. I have the map set in the AID and display the smaller dials.
In any other display, I find the dials too large.
Just personal preference.

I wish we could have the extra small dials like Audi, or even the very minimal text that the Polo has :(

Going to put this here as its about new tech in MK 7.5
The new Car Net features that comes with the MK 7.5 mention new security features where you can track your car via an e-sim and get notifications if it leaves the area, or the door handles are tried.
Obviously not a replacement for any high end security system but its obviously an up lift all the same and if do get an alert you can at least check if anyone is meddling with the car.
Was wondering how much of a deterrent it is to a thief though? as this is now they cannot remove the e-sim easily imagine? Or could it be a quick OBD plug in and disable? is it really a tracker?
Know some of you guys/girls have this in use now, so be interested in your thoughts?

Yeah same here, tried the larger dials and really don't like them. It is a shame it's a basic system compared to the Audi virtual cockpit. The poor (cheaper) relation

I use it all the time - great for location checking and making sure it’s all locked up. I’ve also got a Smarttrack tracker and immobiliser as well as I’m not 100% sure how secure the e-sim is.
It also threw a wobbler once and told me all doors were unlocked (rapid sprint to car park confirmed all ok) and the App hosting goes down occasionally meaning you have to re-load it, not the end of the world, but a bit of a chore. The feature that gives directions on how to get back to your car is occasionally handy (after once losing a Discovery in London when I got lost)

Yeah, just a shame you can't have the smaller dials say with the radio option in the middle in place of the nav, or driving data in place of nav.
Hey ho, other than that minor I love it, so I'll just get on with it
-
If you put it on Nav when you first start the car and before you connect CarPlay it’ll let you keep the map on the driver display unless you launch Waze or something via CarPlay. I’ve used mine that way a lot. Actually apart from average mpg and fuel range, I find most of the other stuff pretty pointless - the mid section of the AID between the dials is a real waste of screen space merely showing what’s already elsewhere on or around the dials.

You can't have the map on both screens though with the standard discover Nav?
Well, you can actually. If you have the map set in the AID and you connect Carplay and open Google Maps or another map app, you can have a map display on both. Until you start navigating somewhere on the app then it turns off the AID map.
-
Isn't that pretty much what I just said?
-

Perhaps, think it was the way you worded it! Launching a map app is ok but starting nav isn't.
-
You can't use the VW maps while Google Maps route guidance is running, but you can have VW route guidance running in the AID at the same time as having Google Maps with satellite and traffic running on the main MIB screen. Works quite well actually. At least it does on Android Auto anyway.
-
I prefer Waze personally. I like the way you get alerts for speed cameras, police, potholes etc and how it’ll automatically route you around traffic jams rather than just plot the most direct route. Plus the maps are updated frequently. I can’t see why anyone would choose to use the VW Nav if they have CarPlay or AndroidAuto, even allowing for the fact you can’t display third party Nav apps on the AID. The robotic voice of the stock system is jarring too. That said, it’s still better than most stock systems.
-
I don't bother with the voice, I have mine muted as I don't appreciate the interruption to whatever i'm listening to. I've never used Waze, but what I do find is that having maps displayed between the clocks is much, much easier to follow than having to look across at the MIB screen. Even if it is only the native route guidance.
App Connect showing on the AID would be best of both worlds.
-
I found Waze a complete pain and much prefer the nav pro in my GTi. If maps are kept up to date along with speed cams then no reason to not use the VW nav.

Waze couldn’t be any easier, you enter your destination and off you go. Are you sure you’ve used Waze?
-
Yes I'm sure 🤷♂️
-
Is there nothing that can be done with VCDS? i.e. Audi mode.

so because someone doesn't necessarily agree with everyone else you need to resort to childishness??

Was reading about IOS 13 and carplay now allows dual screens, so the option is there for carplay to appear on AID, however not sure if VW would need to release an update or if it means new hardware before it will be supported.
Really hoping it just works...
-
I think you’ve misunderstood. By dual screen they mean split screen. Eg. The main dash screen will support two apps side-by-side, eg Apple Maps on one half, Apple Music on the other (if you want to). This doesn’t extend to the AID. The inability to display the same thing on the AID as on the main screen is a VW limitation, not an Apple one. NB split screen in iOS13 will be limited to native Apple apps initially, ie it won’t work with Google Maps, Waze or Spotify (in split mode).

Nope, not misunderstood. pretty much every source I can find via google has clearly stated that it allows the use of a second screen such as the HUD or the instrument cluster. This is separate to the redesign of the homescreen etc.

I think there is a misunderstanding somewhere, as you're talking about iOS 13 and CarPlay in one post, and then Google in the next
Whoops, misread. You're finding your sources via Google. My eyes jumped to the words "google has clearly stated"
Having said that, I have to agree with Mutley

Yes, I think what VW have done here is to remove the possibility of having anything but a Nav screen between the dials. The temptation to hack a video screen there would be too much for some idiots. We have enough distractions as things are now.
Just read that back and I sound like Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells! Ah well, made my point. 😐

Link here, mentions all the display changes and then at the bottom mentions that there’s support for dual screens. Like I said previously, definitely suggests it’s enabling hud/aid type displays as a second screen in my opinion. I’ve asked the local dealership and they are looking into it, will update here if I find anything interesting out.

"I've asked my local dealership. " That would be the last place I'd ask about anything up and coming. They are normally the last to know about anything new!

Yea i'm not expecting anything positive but you've got to give them a chance i suppose!
Changelog from Apple's website is here - https://www.apple.com/ios/ios-13-preview/features/
Second screen support is definitely the ability to display in the HUD/AID screen, not the new dashboard. Over to Vw I guess then to see if/when it's supported.

Yup, it does indeed suggest that, well spotted. Wonder if different hardware would be required? Maybe not, but even if it's software I reckon it'll be a selling point of the Mk8 rather than an upgrade, unfortunately.
Not that it matters to me, as I'm an Android user
-
The Mk8 has a new panoramic display thing (I think that was what Evo called it) which already can be seen on high-end VW's...
In fact, most of what will make the Mk8 probably can already be seen elsewhere further up VW's range... we only tend to look at the Golf, which is more middle bottom than top!

Saw the interior of the new Touareg the other day, now that was a display
-
Just to note the ‘dual screen’ thing (I’ve not read your links yet) may refer to the fact that from iOS13 you will be able to look at one app on your phone (your passenger, obviously!) and something else on the dash screen. Presently, if you have Music on the dash and open Waze on the phone, both screens will Display Waze. I think that’s what is meant by dual screen support.
EDIT...
Second video stream support
Automakers can develop CarPlay systems that show information in a second screen, such as in a cluster or HUD.

Yes... exactly that in many respects
-
Blimey, I'm glad I'm not into all this tech or reliant on it as all these worries/issues would drive me mad! You all have my sympathy (whether or not you want it...)
-
The tech is one reason I switched from Audi. All standard on the GTI. Many thousands of your hard earned for optional extras on an Audi! A small part of me does miss my four rings though. Mostly for the fit & finish of the interior which is way ahead of VW. :undecided:

I loved my A4, it was a great car if a little flawed in some areas but I don't miss Audi. I didn't like the A3 interior, nor did my OH, which is why I ended up with a VW. Come the next change I will again go for what I want regardless of the brand (assuming funds allow).
-
The dealership haven't confirmed either way yet, but they have confirmed that I can have Nav at no extra cost so it's not a worry. Think i'll be trading the golf in for a Polo Gti Plus tomorrow....

Yup, bloody ace that is. Maybe have tog et saving for when my PCP is up. A GTI and a Touareg, that would be a stable!

Evo1986 said previously "HUD and innovission cockpit should be options"
So this:
https://www.volkswagen-newsroom.com/en/innovision-cockpit-3958
On the Toe-rag btw, the innovision cockpit is a 3600 quid option and the HUD another 1000...
I like the idea but 4600.... eeek!

Give it 2 years - it'll be less than half that figure.

I'm struggling with this having just taken delivery of my car with the standard set up. I've worked out you can't have the navigation displayed on the infotainment system and the AID at the same time.
The navigation on the AID is displaying with the big dials. How do I change this to show the smaller dials?
Also, silly question but how the hell do you turn the radio off? I've had to turn the volume down to nil.
Thanks
-
Change to smaller dials by pressing the square 'ok' button on the right hand side of the steering wheel.
To turn the radio off without switching the head unit off simply select another source by pressing the media button.
-
Thanks @Guzzle, I must have tried every button except the OK one.
The smaller dials look better I think.
When displaying the Nav, is there a way of getting it to show the gear selected on the left dial rather than what I assume is elevation?
-
If you use the left and right toggle on the right of the steering wheel and go into 'views' you can configure the centre of the dials. I have mine in 'consumption and range' which shows a small gear indicator, but 'gear and speed' is also available.
-
Thanks very much, got it
One final question if I may - is it possible to change the volume of the sound actuator. I know it can be disabled completely but can you change the volume of it?
-

Not directly.
But you can change the driving profile to Custom, which allows you to set Engine Sound to Eco which mutes it a little bit.
