Hi
Normally my 2013 dsg will only start the engine when the start/stop has turned it off by pressing the accelerator.
Today the engine started after taking my foot of the brake a few times in traffic. Car was in drive.
Later on, it acted normally again by pressing the accelerator to start the car.
Has anyone else experienced this ?
Thanks

They will start up if the car in front moves off - at least mine does (facelift).
-
That’s interesting. I’ll have to test that. Thanks

Not sure if it does it all the time or only when ACC is active - I'm can't remember. For the record though, I'm not on the brake or the gas when it happens
-
Mine will do that if the steering wheel moves slightly , ie if your resting your hands on it ,
I think it activates the power steering pump which means power drain hence the engine starts .

My car starts when the car in front moves. It’s definitely linked to the sensor. I’ve tried it with ACC turned on and off, makes no difference with mine. It’s one of the reasons I hate when people crawl up to lights, stop then crawl a bit more! 🙄

Annoying isn't it. Have you tried turning Front Assist off?

Thanks for the replies.
I haven’t turned acc off. I’ll have a play the next time it does it.

Tell me about it! Suppose I could turn it off. It’s such a great feature though. Just need to teach people to pull up to lights etc properly.

Agree with this. Crawlers really bug me.
I’ve had my GTI 3 months and only just realised how Hold Assist works. I’d always wondered why you’d need such a thing with a DSG because it’ll never roll back on a hill while in drive anyway so I intentionally left it switched off.
Anyhow, I accidentally engaged it last weekend and discovered it automatically applies the parking brake when you come to a full stop and if start/stop is engaged, it doesn’t start the engine by taking your foot off the brake pedal, requiring a press of the throttle. The engine will still start up again if the car in front moves off, but the GTI won’t crawl forwards until you press the throttle.
On balance I quite like not having to sit at traffic lights with my foot on the brake (I’ve never been one to use the handbrake for anything other than parking up) so I’ll keep Hold Assist switched on.

This made me laugh Mutley. We’ve both had our cars about 3 months and I’ve only just figured this out this week too.

On the flip side of this, I was trying out driving without the auto hold, all was well and good until I parked on my dad's inclined driveway. Put the car into park, which I assumed would apply the handbrake, but as I took my foot off the brake the car rolled backwards a few inches before settling! That was unnerving. Quickly manually applied the handbrake then. I guess I don't really understand the e-brake at all. What is the point?

Technically, I don't think AH applies the full parking brake as such as it doesn't make the same whirring noise on and off as it does when you turn the engine off to park or apply the brake manually. Must be a 'light' version to stop you creeping and allow you to move off quickly.

I've found the autohold excellent, it's left switched on and I don't have to touch it or the electronic handbrake. It might function differently with mine being a manual. Far exceeded my expectations which tbh, were rather low before I tried it. Going back to a car with a mechanical handbrake now would be rather tedious!

Unless you want to do some handbrake turns....

It is good practice to pull up a couple of car lengths short of the back of a queue until you have a couple more vehicles have stopped behind you. Providing you are keeping an eye in your mirror, you'll have some room to move into should a following car be bearing down on you with smoke poring off all four locked wheels.

Agreed, this always good practice. Although most drivers wouldn't notice the car approaching from behind anyway as they are normally busy staring down at their phone, sorry I mean looking at their lap.

Dodgy thing to do! Park locks the transmission by engaging a pin in a slot. The pin slot arrangement is not made to stand shock loads.

I understand it's dodgy, that's why my post implied I didn't KNOW that was going to happen. What I don't get is why the e-brake isn't just tied to the gear select - why isn't it just applied when you put the car into park? I'm struggling to think of occasions where you'd want the car in park but with the handbrake off, or in drive with the handbrake on
-
If AH is on, and you select P AND switch off the ignition, the parking brake is then applied automatically.

Likewise, I know that, that's how I have my car set up normally and why I didn't REALISE I had to apply it manually if auto-hold was off. I can't wrap my head around why the handbrake isn't applied when you're in park. If you're parking, handbrake on. When would you want something different?

The only time I turn Autohold off is when I put the car into the garage, especially when it’s been washed and the brakes are wet. The parking brake has a tendency to stick on when applied to cold, wet discs. At worst, I have found it difficult to release the brake, needing a lot more revs than is comfortable to do so in the confines of a garage. Also, Autohold makes manoeuvring in tight areas more difficult than necessary, so I knock it off to drive the car into the garage and just use the footbrake to control movement.

Similarly, the only time I turn autohold off on my DSG Alhambra is when parking in the garage-space is tight with my mountain bike ahead of me- the autohold will trigger when you creep forward slowly with the foot on the brake, so i have to turn it off.
Wouldn't trust the wife not to wreck my bike and bumper, so it's my job every evening!
Works brilliantly on my manual GTI- never turn it off.
