Title: Potential Problem for Start/Stop?
Post by: Talk-torque on 20 June 2019, 22:28
The start/stop system on my 2016 car was so slow to restart the engine that I habitually turned it off. Since getting my new car I have continued to turn it off until today, when I discovered that it is now usefully improved. The car starts rapidly enough not to be embarrassing, so I will continue to use it, in the interest of the environment, especially in our urban streets.

However, the start/stop only operates when the car is happy that it should - the battery has enough charge, the cabin does not need heating or cooling etc. Some city councils have recently declared that they will be fining drivers who do not turn their engine off in congestion zones, so do start/stop systems have a problem here? I’m guessing that those with start/stop systems will be expected to manually override it in these situations, or risk a fine.

I was concerned about stop/start before I got my car (a 2015) but it has been very good with no issues. As for your second point, this is something that does concern me, I have seen a couple of areas local to me that are declared as no idling zones but I've no idea how you approach this if your system does not want to stop.

Found this link regarding idling via my local council website - https://idlingaction.london/

Seems the basis is on being parked as opposed to being stopped in traffic which to me seems entirely reasonable and would not change my current behaviour. Particularly as I have deep pockets and short arms

I think this is aimed at motorists who sit parked for several minutes with their engine running to keep the aircon going for example.
Not people just stuck in traffic.

I know the question has been answered, but I guess you'd have to do the same as I do in my Mk2. KMP would hate it. It's not got Blind Spot Assist either.
