Title: Creaking noise from front wheel when pulling away
Post by: drokkeh on 07 June 2019, 11:50
Had an annoying issue with 2011 Mk6 Gti last couple of weeks.

When I am pulling awy in first gear I am hearing a creaking/whining noise from what sounds like the passenger front wheel.

Goes away until you come to a stop then I hear it again after moving off.  Noise lasts for about 1 second.

Any ideas what to check for?  Wheel Bearings or something?

I would check the brake disc and pads and that the sliding pins are free first. Could be brakes binding momentarily then releasing? Dismantle and reassemble may sort it.

Wont be wheelbaring as that would get louder.
If you drive slowly on full lock can you hear a ticking? If so could be CV joint.
If it only does it moving off it could be suspension top mounts or subframe bolts. The subframe bolts are known to wotk loose and creak.

Not hearing any clicking noise when on full lock driving slow.

"throw out bearing" apparently? Not sure if its called same thing in the UK or not?

Dont know if you have to replace just that part or the whole clutch/assembly too?

You can change just the bearing BUT if you have the box out to change it you may as well do the clutch as well if you are keeping the car a while. Not cheap though.

Yeah - this is what I am thinking.  6-7 hours labour just to change a £45 part!

As far as I know "throw out bearing" and "release bearing" is the same thing??

I have had the car less than 12 months.  55K on the clock - original clutch probably.

Doesnt need to be a 'performance' clutch as car is standard and I dont intend to mod.

Clutcj isnt slipping or anything.  Just that annoying noise and clutch feels stiff to depress.  Literally hurts your left foot when doing clutch control in heavy traffic for long periods.  I'm sure that aint normal.

I guess you could find a decent specialist who could inspect and examine the clutch and clutch plate hen they take it out for you and advise from there. It all depends if its effected anything else and how quick you need the car back as ordering extra parts when its apart could add days to the job as not all small outfits will have return policies in place with suppliers which allows them to send back unused parts.
