Title: MK3 or MK4 calipers
Post by: Blue MK2 on 27 October 2003, 16:30
When i brought my J reg MK2 the guy got a new rear left capliper by VAG.

I went and brought a rear right one to match but it dont seem to fit. The hoses are on the wrong side.

Could the fitted caliper be one from a MK3 or MK4 with a few mods?

Any ideas?

The mk3 ones will fit straight on the late mk2s, not sure about the mk4 ones. Are you sure they haven't given you another left hand one?

The mk3 rear calipers are much better than the mk2 ones as the handbrake mechanism is internal, this is what always seizes up on the mk2 model.

the mk4 calipers are the same as the mk3 calipers except they are alloy

as VR6 said, the handbrake mechanism's are internal, so if you can see the spring & rachet on yours then its a mk2

i would suspect he's givin you another left hand caliper also

I got the caliper from Lucas so it must have been the write one. I also got a right hand caliper off a scrap car with the same reg. Still didnt look write?

Any ideas?

the difference between early & late mk2 calipers is that that handbrake mechanism is on the side of the early calipers, this was then moved to the back of the late calipers
