Hi, forgive the rant but my exasperation has boiled over.
I've been trying to lease a 5dr GTI DSG and spent hours and hours on the phone in the last few days to countless lease companies and brokers. I thought it would be straightforward.
This afternoon my frustration piqued. I keep seeing cars available online for a price in my budget, I ring up to ask for a quote only to be told again, and again and again, "Ok, that car which shows as In Stock online, isn't, sorry. We only had 1 and it went an hour ago". All responses similar to this.
Finally, yesterday I had a dealer that swore to me he had one available in my second choice colour (indium grey). It would be another £20 a month because the stock white I wanted had all sold out but at this point I didn't care. I instantly filled all the paperwork out. It was sent off for finance approval and I got a call just now to say by the time my application had got to the top of the pile, the car had gone.
There are hundreds, literally one company told me, of manuals around but no DSGs (unless you pay above market rate which is really out of my budget). Apparently VW are running a campaign to shift the manuals. Does this mean they would deliberately hold the DSGs back from the lease market?
I was furious earlier this afternoon, now just very disappointed and disillusioned.
Are there any niche lease companies anyone can recommend? Or any tips on getting there first.

Leasing is hard when you are going for a particular car on offer. The lease companies or brokers all get access to the same deals which might be for a limited amount of stock so it’s first come first served. According to brokers I know, a lot of the online companies advertise knowing they won’t get stock but get your enquiry and try to sell you another deal.
Best bet is find a local broker who normally don’t charge admin fees and tell them what you want. They’ll normally match or get close to the online deals.
Not sure about DSG but could well be getting rid of the manuals as you can’t order manual now. I’ve been into two dealers recently and both had manual 3rd in the showroom.
-
Most brokers are 'bait and switch' and/or work with a dealer group to shift stock, so they're generally best avoided unless you are quick or lucky.
My advice - go direct. Go into a main dealer from a large group such as Inchcape or Lookers etc, tell them exactly what you want and how much you are willing to pay from the outset. They can/will then search their group stock (and also what's coming from VW) to find cars, and if something fits your bill you can take it. I did this with a Match Edition for my ex back in 2016, brokers gave me the run around, so I went to my local dealer (Lookers) and they price matched on a stock car I picked up a week later.
From memory, you've been looking for a while, and as we come to the end of the 7.5 your choices will get less and less, so if you see something, act on it.
The guy who sold (I bought but they also do lease) me my GTI is excellent and works for an Inchape dealer (one of the biggest in the country) so if you want me to put you in touch with him to check stock, let me know.

Thanks both, I'll try my local dealers direct. I started off using carwow and whatcar who found the deals and then went to more and more leasing companies.
Case in point, just now had a message from Neva Direct: "Great news John, we've just had a another batch of GTIs become available". Me: "You're going to tell me they're all manuals aren't you?". Neva: "Let me check...yes...every single one is a manual. How did you know?". I've nothing against manuals but have never driven a DSG before and have my heart set on one.
@kmpowell, yes please, are you able to PM me details?
Thanks

Both my lease cars were ordered from main dealers. Both were factory orders, but both were for the advertised price, or less than the advertised price by haggling and playing them off against each other. You probably won't be charged an admin fee either. Just show them your best quote and see what they can do.
I don't know what offers you've had, but none of the offers i've seen recently have been that great. :undecided:

Message sent.

This is true. VW dealers don't charge the admin fee, so make sure you don't work on the basic cpm figure, it's the amortised CPM figure including the upfront 3/6/9 plus admin fees etc, that counts.
-
LOL. Another broker has contacted me. He has one grey DSG available. Not none, or 3 or 5. Just one.
I've applied in hope tonight but will follow up with main dealers tomorrow.

What sort of deals u being offered? My GTi deal ends in Nov and I would happily take another.

I'm trying to stay below £300 a month, paying 9 months up front.
Prices were consistently around the £270-£280 mark which is affordable to me. That's based on a 5K mileage as I do low miles.
I was told by all the lease companies that this was an amazing VW limited special deal and to order immediately. I thought this was just sales patter but still ordered anyway as it was affordable. Every single company has let me down.
Prices are now around £350 a month for the same deal. Over the term, that's quite a bit more for a lease.
I have no benchmark though as to what is good and what is bad.
The broker that let me down on the GTI has offered me an R now for £340 a month. Again, just one available and I need to sign up immediately to get it. The R is a great car and that does seem a good price but I specifically wanted a GTI for reasons I won't bore people with
-
Ok, update:
Golf GTI is gone (unless I pay way above market rate).
I can choose between an R pre-enhanced (without keyless and rear camera), R enhanced (with both options), or Cupra 290.
The R is around £300 a month with another £30 for the enhanced. The Cupra seems cheap at £200 a month.
TCO for the Cupra is cheaper by £3-4K over just 2 years.
However, it doesn't have the digital dash which I really wanted, plus a few other options. I want something that's more at the comfort end of the performance/comfort compromise and the Cupra has a firmer ride with 19" wheels I am told.
Cost is of course a factor but I want comfort in a small hatchback with decent performance and lots of toys. Also, just looking for a 2 year lease for now before the Mk8 comes out.
Any suggestions as to whether the Cupra or R is a better fit?
Thanks
-
You are looking with heart ruling head, otherwise you'd be looking at run of the mill cars for peanuts. For that reason, I think the R for £300 would be the car to go for. It was 18 years ago, but I went from a Mk4 Golf to a Mk1 facelift Leon Cupra. Great car that it was, it did feel like a backward step in terms of quality.
The problem that going for the R tho' is what do you get in 2 years time to better it?
-
Pretty sure the latest spec Cupra's have digital cockpit and dynamic chassis control as standard. You'd miss out on active cruise, rear camera, keyless (no big loss imo) and winter pack though.
How much are the upfront payments? Monthlies are only half the story.
As much as I like the R, an extra £3k or £4k over 2 years is a big chunk of money for a car you're only considering because what you really want isn't available.
If it's only for 2 years i'd go for one of the manual GTi's as the best compromise if they're still available.

Does the R have the adaptive suspension at the rates you quote there? If so then its a stronger argument against the the Cupra without on 19"
We could all specify a lesser car and not specify options and save a decent amount of cash in the process, but we would likely not be driving around the car we really wanted.
I set my budget and am happy to pay a little extra to have the car I want and if this was me choosing I would happily pay the extra for the R - Some may call that badge snobbery etc. But I think the R is just a better package all around, especially in the cabin, the place where actually feeling good about where sitting really counts.
The keyless and rear view camera are easily livable without if want to save a little, neither would detract from the experience.
My lease expires in October and I have just ordered a GTI TCR and I added the Reifnitz Performance Pack, the Climate Screen and the 90% Tints and the Pure Grey Paint - I could have saved over £3000 by not taking them as options, but I put in a full week like most, and most goes into the family pot, and as driving is one of my life pleasure, it will always be money well spent to me, have never regretted spending that bit more for the feeling driving a car you want gives daily.
One thing I am though is totally honest with my budget, and have never chased anything beyond it - So I would say forget choosing between cars, go and have a good think about what can truly afford and happy to pay and then choose between the cars that fit that

That was one of the reasons for going for a GTI. I figured I didn't need and wouldn't want R level performance. I've come from a 10 sec+ 0-60 car so the GTI still feels very quick to me. Also, if I found the performance seductive, there is the logical next step of the R/S3 to go to as next car.
My heart is definitely ruling my head but I've always bought cheap cars till now and want something decent although I do a low mileage. I would much prefer to buy but it's just bad timing with the new Mk8 and new A3 just around the corner. A 2 lease gives me a chance to try a nice car without spending too much.
I can't help thinking I'd regret compromising on the Cupra and I do it see it as a compromise.
Then again, if I had a choice between a GTI and R at the same price, I'd go for the GTI.

I'm paying 9 months up front so that alone is about £1K between the Cupra and the R. I saw there is a Cupra Lux pack, maybe that has the digital cockpit but TBH the more I look at the Cupra interior, the more I prefer the Golf's.
There are 3 dr DSG GTIs about so I could maybe look at that again, but I definitely want the DSG. Never had a DSG before and want to experience it and 80% of my driving is driving in traffic.
You are right, the Cupra has ACC but the R doesn't. I just get the standard spec on a lease.
-
@Hertsman, that is where I am at. I would rather pay a bit more and feel that I've not settled for second best. Though of course some compromise has to be had on options, colour etc with a lease.
I really wanted the GTI but I have reconciled myself to the fact it is the R, or the Cupra. Also looked at the TCR but that is crazy expensive on a lease.
Deal is still good though on the R when I look at lease deals on the A class, or the A3/S3 for example.

@david25, I'd be OK with £320 now for a GTI but just checked and they have none in stock.
-
If the R had the camera and not keyless, I would have said jump on it.
I bet a manual GTI would be wicked fun.
Praying you find something as I'd like to see another Town fan in a GTI! ;)

There are cars I would love outside of my budget but do not chase them, first thing I do is set my maximum spend, completely honestly and then I go find the cars that fit that maximum and then choose, some come in on limit, others save me a little, the TCR for example came in under the R for me so I am actually going to be saving on what have been paying last 3 years.

IMO - With the Cupra you'll be left with a compromise, and you'll probably spend two years regretting not getting the one you wanted. The R is a good car, but it's a bit sterile, and will cost you more.
Here's a few 24mth 5Dr DSG deals with the status of "In Stock". You've probably tried but thought I'd post them up anyway, just incase you hadn't seen them...

No joy with the contact I gave you at Inchcape?
-
The Cupra Lux gives you leather interior (why do people not research these things before potentially buying). The Cupra is lighter and has the e-diff so should be quicker and more agile on the move than an R. By all accounts the front tyres don't last long
-
I have tried that one @kmpowell. They only have 3 dr DGSs left unfortunately.
Have tried your contact but he is on a training course this week and not contactable until the weekend, will give him in a call then in a last ditch attempt.
Probably go for the R now though. At the end of the day, I think it's the closest I'll get to a GTI that is affordable and available. Not a bad car to settle on either

Hopefully a better season this year @sjw.
Is keyless really that much of a worry on a lease? I just like the idea of starting the car with a button.

Keyless isn't a worry at all, it can be disabled on the 7.5 by the driver.

I would go camera and keyless rather than sacrifice the camera to avoid the keyless. I love my camera! The car would be alright to park without it but with the camera makes it a cinch. I wouldn't want a car without it now.
I originally wanted keyless but I don't regret not having it, the OH's Merc drives me up the wall!
